Covering celebrity lawsuits is absolutely not selling out and would fit this channel perfectly -- it's right up your alley. Your explanation on things when it comes to legal topics is extremely entertaining. You could be another LegalEagle in a way. Definitely worth considering imo

i hear ya! it's weird bc while i totally see how it would be on-brand, it *feels* like selling out to me--probably because what i actually want to talk about is some other sphere. i'm definitely going to check out some legaleagle videos in january and see how i feel about that type of content for myself, though. thank you for that input!

I started watching your content because I am applying to law school. But your newsletter and podcast have became my favorite thing to listen and read now. Your content is so succinct and nuanced. Can’t wait to tune into all your content for 2023 and happy new year!

Hi, Cece. I’m not used to finding promising creators so early on in their careers; truth be told, it’s pretty exciting.
In your short videos you came across as sort of a benevolent and energetic older sister guiding us through the mysteries of corporate law, life ,and etiquette.
The most engaging aspect of your early content was that your life story, inuitions and vulnerabilties gave an aura of genuinity. You were talking the talk and walking the walk, as a decent person living in the ultra goal-driven, ultra competitive world of Big Law. I feel like the Hebrew word Shibboleth is a better name for whatever your "thing" is.
God, this comment is already wayyy too long…
I’m saying all of this because I feel like your more recent content has become more synthetic than authentic. By “synthetic”, I don’t mean artificial. I believe the views you express are genuinely yours and that you’re giving your best analysis of some big topics in our generation’s ethos. I’m saying that if I read the transcripts of your videos out of context, there’s no way I’d know you wrote them.
You select a topic of public interest, collect an appropriate corpus to base your thesis upon, and use the standard tools of legal argumentation to structure a presentation. I know breaking old habits is hard, but God, Cece, I can *see* the bullet points and paragraphs when you speak.
Added structure is not the issue - actually, it very much pleases my somewhat on-the-spectrum brain; In the hypersaturated world of video-essayists and influencers, someone will always make more thorough, exhaustive and varied content. In order to stand out as a creator, you might want to channel your idiosyncracies rather than your style. Instead of jumping on the zeitgeist, bring something that's uniquely yours to the debate.
Don’t spin the wheel, Khaleesi, break it ! You’re the intellectual and academic equivalent of an Olympian; talk about that ! You drop sooo many subtle references to Marxist inspired philosophy, like Guy Debord’s société du spectacle and the phrase “end-stage capitalism”; how do you reconcile that cultural background with having worked in Big Law ? You seem to have a pretty down to earth view of monogamy, mariage and relationships; how did this play with your bi-cultural upbringing and your work?
Take care, Cece. I’m very excited to see where this channel is headed. Bye XOXO

wonderful points all around, thank you! i certainly struggle with this idea that me, as myself, my experiences--not my knowledge or things i learned in school or work--could ever be interesting to the outer world. a negative comment that i received a while ago, that i was "nothing without my prestigious degrees," reflects a lot of what i actually think about myself, and it's something that i'm going to work on this year and hopefully be able to channel my idiosyncrasies in my content, as you suggest. again, thank you for these wonderful points--i really appreciate it and can't wait to see where we go. happy new year!!

The title :( I love your videos too! There really isn't much overlap in the kind of content you do and anyone else I can think of and while I originally was disappointed you quit your job as a lawyer hearing more about the way you handle monetization and won't dump bad endorsements to your audience and are more committed to fulfillment in other ways rather than simply being an "influencer" at all costs makes me respect you a lot more and totally reevaluate my perception that everyone who quits their job to become an influencer is greedy. Being a failed influencer is so insignificant compared to all your accomplishments!

I loved hearing your thoughts on this. I’ve heard multiple influencers complain about the difficulties about the lack of agency in their public perception and lack of financial security in length, but never from an analytical perspective, so learning about this phenomenon as it relates to you and the broader social context was so illuminating.

I think you do long form content really well, but maybe check out Mina Le's videos in how she edits images into her talks to keep the audience engaged.
For example, when you were quoting people, it would've been nice to include the actual words on the screen so I can follow along.

I deeply enjoy the thoroughness and comprehensive approach you follow when you think about a topic! How about offering an inner circle/cohort coaching? A skillshare offering (or any paid courses platform?) If "selling out" is what it takes for us to hear more of you, I'll happily watch the ads on your channels.. and yes, you deserve to thrive while on a sabbatical, and making money is vital for that; the only caveat: being selective about who you sell for, something you are already a customer for, or your values aligned with is a great expansion of the value you offer.. Happy 2023 to you

  • @WithSandra

As someone who creates content myself, I also wonder how much of the "display" aspect of the posts or extravagant lifestyle (aka kim's private island birthday bash) has to do with her actually wanting to share it or just wanting to write it off as a partial business expense since she's able to share it on her social media platforms as part of her "luxury lifestyle niche". Definitely can still be considered tone deaf but at the end of the day, it could also be seen as a business decision, when corporations save millions with tax deductions, creators are doing the same (maybe not at the scale of millions though lol.. typically) so I kinda get it but there's definitely a fine line in there somewhere. Business expenses and deductions are something I find myself thinking about much more nowadays whenever I travel to create content or meet up with another creator to discuss youtube, etc. I love these episodes Cece! Happy new year! :)

    • @CeceXie
      @CeceXie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

that's such a good point--how our tax policies and structures encourage this type of display and conspicuous consumption. i love how so many things, at the end of the day, come back to corporations and taxes, ha. you've given me a lot of food for thought, thank you--and happy new year!

  • @leighjones2960

I don’t understand your premise that making money is selling out. It absolutely is not. Money is required to live. As long as you’re not hurting anyone or hiding the connection, then sell, endorse, advertise away.
I think you need to adjust your thinking that advertising is bad. It absolutely isn’t. It’s problem solving. A company or person has a solution to a problem that the viewer may or may not know they have. The advertiser thinks their product or service will solve a problem. That is all advertising is. It’s certainly not a bad thing.
If folks are chastising you for accepting advertising or you’re doing that to yourself, take a step back. That’s not how the world works. You have the right to earn money how you see fit and offering solutions to your viewers’ problems and getting paid for it seems like a good thing, not selling out.
I hope you find some peace this year. You deserve good things as you make your way in a different landscape.

    • @CeceXie
      @CeceXie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

i completely agree on a theoretical level! practically, however, there is definitely audience pushback on content that is obviously funded by advertising spend, which then causes influencers to not disclose paid partnerships, further eroding audience perceptions of sponsored content. gaby dunn's article (which i linked in the description) is a really great summary of this phenomenon and how creators are then forced to pick between making money to support their work or maintaining audience trust. i wish more people considered your viewpoint, which i do think is the realistic one!

I think you need a content strategy if you want to continue to be a full time content creator - at the moment it feels all over the place and I'm following you because I happen to relate to these topics but I don't feel this is targeted at me, this is more about you and where you are in your journey (which is changing) than your audiences. Selling out or not, I believe is whether it really fits with your content strategy and serves your audiences. CR7 is an example of selling out - a move out of nowhere for money.

I’m one year into big law and I’ve found myself thinking about quitting law and starting my own business everyday. Your words about not having enough time to find income streams is so true, I do wonder if it’s worth it to stick it out for a few more years of “experience”? My ultimate cognitive dissonance is being good at something I don’t enjoy.
Maybe you should consider “selling out” and making other types of content? Whenever you talk about something other than law you manage to bring up very interesting / original topics.

I think it's super hard to draw the boundaries between self vs public image when becoming an influencer. it is very normal to not want to do it / fail at it because we as humans are not socialized to have a camera in our face and have strangers analyze us without real consequences. sometimes I feel that being a failed influencer might be better than being an influencer who plays the game so well that they are detached from who they really are.

First, i'm a fan. but here it goes. Sell out really doesn't mean anything. ex. 1 one musician was given two choices. one, touring with a really popular band. The other, touring with your 4th all time favorite musicians. One musician might choose the first one because if he tours with the really popular band, that can lead to working with his 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th all time musicians. You see what i mean? One musician might choose to do things they don't really like because it might lead to better financial stability and the chances to work with his actual favorite musicians. Ex.2 one musician was given two choices. One, touring with a really popular band. The other, touring with his all time 1st or 2nd favorite musicians, with no pay though. Obviously, I think any musician will choose the "other" option, even if it's no pay. It's pretty much the same with youtube. You-tubers have to make what people search for and what you know the best at OR what you have the best chance at gaining subscribers. Everyone kinda has to sell out, at some point, to a certain degree. btw, you are really good at talking/hosting. proper spacing between words. Not many people sound as good as you without some kind of editing. Check out "theStradman", he has an excellent hosting skill (like talking to people. He's also great at smiling. and uplifting people's mood. And he has super strong work ethic. Like never miss a vloging day ). I would read your book if you have a book out like "How to casually talk to people in a corporate setting", "The art of convincing someone without pissing them off". (Anyways, I understand people wanting to sell out, and I sympathize with them. some of them are not really good people but I understand why they have to do it. selling out just means to me "diluting your very own product for better sales. And, you let your pride, ethics and morals slide it. for your gain. Be it monetary. social status gain. ego boost, etc ")

I think your authentic and transparent approach to this discussion (among so many other topics) really lends credibility to you as a content creator. I don't like the feeling of being duped into trying to buy a product -- but at the same time, I want to support my favourite creators with views, ad revenue, etc. etc. -- being transparent / authentic / open about why you are partnering up with X brand, why you are running adverts, etc., avoids any credible allegation that you are a "sell out." On another note, I agree with the comments below about how you should continue to have legal content in your work! Celebrity law suits, high profile case law, all that jazz would be great continued addition to the range of topics you explore

Omg you are not failing- you are in the unknown- friend! Reach out to your audiences- what do they want to hear? Ask them- not selling out- no one will pay your bills except you. So- look at influencers you respect and how they themselves monetize- use monetize- not “selling out”- such a negative connotation. Mayim Bialik, Andrew Huberman, etc research their sponsors so they feel they completed their due diligence to basically feel good about taking sponsorship from things they believe in. Hang in there, you have got this!! You are not selling out- your content is worth every penny!! 🥰🥰🥰

    I loved this episode.
It's completely fine rather I'd encourage it to have sponsored minutes in video given that the content otherwise presented in the video is useful.
Informative content makers especially should do sponsored content because well, as an audience, we are being introduced to information that we simply wouldn't have, had there not been that content. (Like I learn so much from your videos. You have no idea. There are so many new concepts that I was not even aware of existed.)
I have observed that many vloggers especially lifestyle vloggers' 20-30 minute long videos are just series of ads.
I saw 2 short videos on your channel about you hunting for a co-working space for yourself. I actually wondered if you partnered with some real estate agency for that. So if we assume that you were doing it, at the end, decision would be yours when you'd pick up workspace. Not the agency's.
So basically I wanted to say that if some vlogger advertises a service where end decision is their, it does not feel like sell-out. Another example - Amazon Audible - like if you put that ad, that's super convincing because you're very probably using it and which book to listen is still your decision.
I think Financial Diet channel does this well. Another channel is Beauty Within. They literally have a store. But their videos are very long and very informative. So even if I can't purchase anything from them, I am still getting useful information.

i think the reason why audience members may not like it when their fav creator starts doing ads and brand deals is because they feel used. audience members dont like to be treated like dummies and suddenly promoting whaacky things will most inevitably will affect their trust with you, or maybe it wont! personally it is creepy to hear someone encourage you to use your audience and see them simply as dollar figures but i get it. we live in a capitalist society and we all have to make a buck to live and there really is no such thing as ethical money in this day and age.
