Chris Barrie has cred. He's a mechanic nut, restores cars as a hobby including the engines and gearboxes. Yeah, and I agree with all his choices as well for all the same reasons. And I used to be a Tank Commander.

The "five Shermans to take on one Panther or Tiger" myth has been thoroughly debunked. Shermans deployed in groups, so there were almost always three, four, five, or more Shermans to any German tank. But nobody goes around saying "it took five Shermans to take out a Pz III".

    • @maxpayne2574

    • @jaydw6850

@@jaydw6850 Because just about everything in the military, especially in the allied/western military, is about squadwork. One person, tank, or plane on it's own is a target, a group is a threat. Reject wehreabooism, embrace facts.

@@jaydw6850 You make it sound like they were meeting at noon for an organised dual. There were basically 25 Shermans made for every 1 Tiger so they probably always got outnumbered for that reason as well as simple combined arms doctrine.

Just as a point of interest. I was in the Army Reserve in Australia in the 70s and 80s and we had M113s. At the start of the 80s we received modified 113s fitted the Scorpion turrets two were allocated to each troop as Fire Support Vehicles/Medium Recon Vehicles. There was a rumour going around at that time that the 113s were going to be replaced with the Scorpion family of vehicles but didnt happen.

However some of this tanks changed the way of making tanks.
The tiger family of tanks forced the russians to come out with designs such as is3 is4m t10 and t55, later t64 and the formidable t72 that lead to the americans and germans to an joint program to built a new tank. The mbt70 witch sadly latly was canceld. However after that come out xm1 and after the m1 abrams. As you can see my list had a reason to be like that.

You know your stuff. Also an excellent support weapon. Binh Ba 1969 it was the key to success in that battle.

"The Panther, with its virtually impenetrable frontal armour".
ISU-152 wants to know your location.

Not exactly! Yes ISU-152 can but it is not an anti tank vehicle! IS-2 or T-34/85 can also penetrated Panther tank's front armour

Wittmans credit for all those vehicles single handedly is widely dismissed as Nazi propaganda. His squadron was with him.
Love Chris Barrie though. Great choices.

1:30 That movie is still watchable and still hilarious to a bunch of 50+ year olds over here in the 2020ies. We use a lot of lines from this movie.

What many dont realize is the Tiger 1 and Sherman both had relatively the same front armor. Tiger 1 was not quite 4" of un sloped and Sherman was 2" of 56 degree sloped.

Very nice top 5! I'm not sure if the Centurion should be at the top though. It's fuel consumption was too high. If Centurion tanks from British bases in West Germany had been ordered to defend West Berlin they would not have been able to reach it without refueling. So at the end of the day you can have a great tank but if it's out of petrol it is useless. This was proved in 1940 when Germany invaded France and later on the other way around in Russia.
