Hats off to the gent for completing a boat AND having a go at constructing an engine. It doesn't matter if it wobbles about and sounds like "Vee twin reciprocating sacks of spanners". He built it himself. Well done.
Wonderful! I happened upon a steam launch meet, on Lake Nockamixon, in Southeast Pennsylvania, and one of the operators invited me along for the day. It was a great experience!

One of the lovely things about steam power is that it can be so lovingly quiet compared to ICE. Just mechanical noise and the chuff of exhausting steam if you aren't condensing.
I think the wheel @ 9:10 is much like the one in the story about a pirate who walked into a pub with a wheel sticking out of his pants. The bartender said nothing about it for a while wishing to be polite but in time curiosity got the better of him and he asked the pirate, "is that a ships wheel sticking out of your pants?" Arrr, it is, and it''s drivin me nuts." I think these boats at one time were drawn by horses walking alongside the canal. My dad came from Newcastle and one of his expressions was "more nerve than a canal horse.'" Thanks for sharing.
Hi reminds me of the African Queen the only thing missing was Rosey and Mr Alnut. The time you have put into your boat has been worth it well done nice job.

Great short film, thanks for posting it, it must have taken a while to edit. The next Rally is June 17th and 18th 2016. There wasn't one in 2015 due to unforeseen circumstances
+Keith Ward Hi, glad you liked the film. I'll make a note of the dates for the next Rally, I think I've made a film of every Coventry Rally so-far. In 2014 we were lucky to be offered a trip on one of the boats after the lunch/pub stop. Yes. it did take some time to put together, bearing in mind we had two lots of footage from the two cameras to edit with.

I am planning a 3" bore twin Stuart Sirius engine sea flea, we used to hydro plane them with 5hp outboards. A flash boiler and intake should work. Gas fired of course. Some nice boats out here,
That's correct. Cast-iron bridge built 1837 and it's solid as a rock. It was a a nice launch, unfortunately it is not mine. I was just lucky to be offered a ride.
Testing of pressure vessels used in public are very strict in UK. New boilers have to be constructed to proven design plans and materials. The first test is hydraulic to twice working pressure +10% for 10min. The steam test has to show working pressure gauge, water gauge and safety valves that will releive the pressure with a very active fire. There must be a minimum of 2 working methods for getting water into the boiler. The hydraulic test is valid for 5 years with a new boiler with a re test every 3 years after that. The steam test is every 12 months and can only be carried out with a valid hydraulic certificate in place. Given the relative low pressures, 100/150psi the boilers on these small boats and locomotives are very OTT in terms of construction.
What is the fuel source for the little steamers ??????? , there's smoke on one scene so is it coal ????? are there any powered by LPG ????? Just noticed with a closer look , coal .
Get a condenser do not waste all that heat, all you have to do is re-condense the steam and put it back to the boiler at 95deg. for minimal heat loss. That is why everybody else is.
Sorry, I can not find the name of the music all I can tell you is it's in the TH-cam audio library probably under Ambient. I think I used three different tracks in all.

@@donepearce No, just think how many combustion engine cars and how many steam ships or locomotives are around today. There is a huge difference, plus many of the little steam ships are fired by wood, like people have little wood-stoves at home. wood is a comparetly neutral fuel.
@@paulhorn2665 Each one of those is simply one more, incredibly dirty combustion engine. I live close to Little Venice and I enjoy walking along the canal towards the London Zoo. The walk is invariably spoiled somewhat by the stink of coal fires coming from the narrow boats.

Such beautiful boats! Does the boat draw water from the canal, or is there a water supply on the boat?
How silent the steamers are? (I am a larger steam fan though!).

The Egyptians thought so when they built them to transport stones to the pyramid sites.

Do any of these boats use flash boilers? Seems that boiler explosion would be a concern or are these hydrostatically tested
In the US they are supposed to get hydro tested and certified every so often.
