Mel Robbins: Why hitting "snooze" ruins your brain

  • You don't need me to tell you that hitting the snooze button once your alarm goes off doesn't make it any easier to wake up. In fact, you probably feel more anxious, less productive, and more tired by the time you wake up after hitting snooze multiple times.
    In this video I'll explain why even though it may seem impossible to get up after hearing the alarm once, it's necessary. Your brain relies on sleep cycles to feel refreshed and energized. Once you wake up and then go back to sleep, you hijack your brain and tell it that it needs at LEAST one more hour of sleep.
    So, if you don't have another hour in the day to spare (you don't), get up and get started. It will be hard at first, but soon you'll understand that the key to productivity is simply getting up on time. Do this for a week and watch how your life improves and your to-do list shrinks.

      The real problem is the Alarm Clock itself !!! We live in an unnatural and sick society that places profit over well being. The real reason people are so tired is because we are not waking up after our bodies have gotten ALL of the healthy rest that it really needs. The alarm clock disrupts our natural sleep in a very toxic manner. It's not right

      @@sanaullahjatoi4750 it actually does work. is you want to get up at 6;30. set alarm to five, then end it when you wake at five. by the time your 6:30 rings, you would have gone through an entire new sleep cycle and should feel more refreshed. it helps some people get up.

    Mel can you talk about the deeper issues why we hit the snooze button? For example, dreading the day, etc. I suspect it's a bad cycle that we don't get up immediately, feel crappy, aren't efficient/don't feel good, don't make progress in our lives, and then don't want to get up.

      The real issue is the alarm clock itself. We should not be startled awake out of our natural state of rest. We are tired because the corporate work time construct is toxic to our well being. We should awaken naturally and only after our body and brains have truly rested.

    Thanks. I needed this. The good thing about using an app to wake up is you can completely disable the snooze button, which I've just done! I always thought that my daily snoozing was doing me no good. That first wake up shock is always way easier than the next 3 every 10 minutes. I have mine set so that I have to solve two maths equations before I can switch it off. G'night!

  • @angelbear_og

    Makes sense. I can wake up a few minutes or even an hour before my alarm goes off. But I lay there awake, waiting for it, because I don't know what time it is (could be 2 am could be 6 am). When it goes off I think "Ugh, I don't want to get up yet" and hit snooze. Fall back asleep within SECONDS. Keep hitting snooze repeatedly, and then finally drag my sleeping head out of bed feeling awful!

    I allways told my housemate to stop nagging at me in the morning because I felt like I needed one more hour for every time.
    Anyways I don't think your solution is just that easy, because it has to be done many many days in a row to stop us from responding the same way to both the alarm's STOP and SNOOZE function, and otherwise changing something like that is very difficult.

    Have you ever woken up after 3 or 4 hours and you feel strangely fully awake? That's normal. You have to set up your alarm to go off when your body is in between cycles. It's easier to get up from bed after 2 complete cycles (about 3 hours), than it is to wake up in the middle of, say, the 4th cycle (somewhere between 6 and 7h30). If you're having trouble waking up, it means your alarm woke you up too early *OR* too late. Go to bed 15 min earlier or later and see how you feel the next morning. Then again 15 min earlier, if necessary, until you find the sweet spot. Then the snooze button won't be necessary and you will feel fully functionnal right away!

      Thomas Favre thank you for your explanation which makes more sense than the video I am quite puzzled by. • @garrettcphillips
      @garrettcphillips 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      try you best to time it in 90 min cycles. so if you go to bed to fall asleep at 11ish, then you might want to wake at 6:30, giving you 5 full cycles. I think 5 is recommended. But yeah, sometimes shit happens and you interrupt that cycle, which is what most people to when they set multiple alarms. 6, 6:15. 6:30, 7;00. it totally messes up your cycle. so try the 90 min rule.

    Well then, I make some pretty amazing decisions while my brain is in sleep inertia. I hit that snooze button bc my alarm scares the crap out of me every morning and I need to get my blood pressure back down. By it's second time going off, I'm at least prepared to hear it and get up. Then I go to work and kick ass... Just saying.

  • @SuperSimpleHealth
    @SuperSimpleHealth 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    While this is good advice, it doesn't actually get to the root cause of the problem. If you even feel the need to hit the snooze button, you're not getting enough quality sleep. Ideally, you should already be awake by the time your alarm goes off.
    So, if you're not getting enough sleep, you need to go to bed earlier. But if you don't fall asleep if you go to bed early, you need to turn off your screens a while before bedtime and have a way to wind down in the time leading up to bedtime. And if that still doesn't work, then you need to start looking at things like nutrition, e.g. avoiding eating late, supplementing extra magnesium.
    But going back to the alarm clock specifically, it's best not to use one that jolts you suddenly awake with a horrible sound because this suddenly puts you into a state of stress which is a terrible way to start the day. I use a light alarm that gradually gets brighter over the course of 30 minutes, then when it's time to get up it makes birdie sounds.

    Do people only need to worry about sleep inertia while hitting snooze? For example, if someone wakes up in the middle of the night to pee and goes back to sleep, then wakes up 2 hours later for work, will that person be in a sleep inertia? Or is it just about hitting the snooze once we are awake regardless of how many hours sleep we have gotten?

    this must be true because after 4 snooze taps.... i never feel alive till about 11:30am smh from like a 6:30am wake up time.

  • @GrowingPains917
    @GrowingPains917 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Isn’t the more likely reason we hit the snooze button because it makes us feel better? Maybe you’re deep in REM sleep and dreaming like crazy and snoozing a few times allows you to drop back into REM sleep so you can finish that cycle and wake up feeling better. I noticed that when my alarm clock goes off my body slowly wakes up and I get out of bed about 30 minutes later. Some days that 30 minutes is desperately needed so I can finish sleeping and other days I’m just allowing my body to slowly wake up. Would love to see scientific studies on snooze button use. A good study would also show the likelihood of each group feeling tired later in the day.

    Anyone else kinda hate the fact that we have to schedule the way we wake up for “maximum productivity”?
    Like I’m just tryna live my life, smh

    Hey Mel, you are my favorite mentor, .i do believe is better to avoid snooze of course , but i think sometimes your theory doesn't work because if you wake in the middle of a deep sleep cycle hour you will feel exhausted and it happen to me on days off to stay a little longer in bed and felt much better afterwards, so i completed my cycle that was interrupted , what do you say about this???

    What about when you wake up to go to the bathroom, then go back to sleep?

    OK, Totally get it, but how should you deal with days off, is the suggestion to still use the alarm clock to get up as per working days ?

    Me realising when I snooze from 9 to 10, wake up around 10 and start feeling like the work is finally going good after 2 pm.. 4 hours later. Shit

    So when I hit the alarm for the first time, how is it guaranteed that I am not in the middle of a sleep cycle too?

    I'm guessing the productive solution is to go to bed earlier by however much time one delays getting up...

    So you’re telling me…don’t hit the snooze button unless I want sleep inertia! That explains my brain fogginess.
