I moved to rawnsley in 91 from down south and know a little bit of history and Im glad some of our old pubs are still alive, many have been sold and converted to houses. The pub next to castle ring which was 500 years old got knocked down a few years ago 😢, i used to work at britool behind the robin hood pub by a5 when i was an engineer (cenre lathe turner, tool cutter and screw cutter a job i adored) but that and all of them got turned into housing estates. In the 90s we had more than 50 machining factorys in cannock, they all houses now because cncs killed off manual skilled machining, by about 2002 that skill was no longer needed 😢. Back to pubs we still have the Trafalgar in, five ways, cross keys, the old Uxbridge, the slade, rag and bone, the royal oak in cannock, someone mentioned the old church on cecil street which used to be the pint and pot 30 years ago until that got turned into houses 😢, still got the nest, the bridge pub got brought out by starbucks a few years ago 😢, four ashes on a5 still exists but been delerict for many years, they do ghost haunts the last time i checked. The interest thing with how pubs got there name was they were named either after royalty visted them or the nearest thing to them, it was like a landmark. Royal oak or anything oak was named if loyalty visited them, dog and bone, rag and bone, white horse etc. Rugely and Litchfield which was one of englands biggest market town1000+ years ago used to be full of really old pubs 30 years ago 😢
A wonderful glance back in time. I'm relitively young (b1959) and grew up in Cheslyn Hay. I remember 1960's Cannock very well, it was a nice little market town in those days. When I left school in 1975 our choices were rather limited, a lot of my school mates went down the pit, they didn't know it at the time but their careers in the coal mining industry would be short. I'm not sure whether it was a blessing or a curse but my brother and I chose the army instead. Good video, enjoyed watching.
There had been a few generations of my family that worked as miners from the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's, the earlier generations worked underground as coal Hewers and the last generation were surface workers, all from the Brassington family who lived in Hednesford.
At 26.05 , that looks like the Baptist Chapel in Arthur Street , Chadsmoor. When the Boys School closed in Church Street , we moved to Burns Street , this was used as a overspill Classroom. Mr Pilsbury taught here for a couple of years , until it was all sorted out with Boys and Girls mixed. It was also used as a Youth Club and Sunday School. GP.
This vid has to be from at least the early 90s though, I remember Hednesford High Street getting Modernised, as with Cannock. I was born in 1986. That being said it's a great educational video.
How did you get this video , Did you get permission from the people who made it as it is copyrighted, I converted this from a old video cassette tape to DVD with permission from the owner, I left a line down the right side , that is how I know its the one I did, you have taken the copyright notice of, and you have also taken my name of also, not good is it of you . 0.48 shows a Mark 3 Granada (not to mention a 'B' registered Polo), indicating that the film dates from 1985 at the earliest.
