Very thorough review Steve! You brought up some points that I wouldn't have even considered. Probably goes without saying but I think it would be cool if you could review the Ichika signature (and the new one when its available!). I think you offer a really unique perspective looking at gear as a math rocker. I don't think there's a single review of the ICHI10 where the reviewer actually plays in the style of Ichika. It's usually just blues or metal riffs.
For sure! Great shout. That guitar has been on my radar. Could compare it to the YY20 too. Would be interested to know how the Ichika sig compares in specs considering it's cheaper (I think).
There is also the ICHI100 which is an Ibanez Talman instead of the headless one. I'd be really interested how that one compares to the yvette signature.
I really hope Ibanez releases this guitar for lefties. It is a shame that they’ve not released a Talman since the 90s for southpaws. The YY20 is such a gorgeous guitar.
That has to be the best orange finish I've ever seen on a guitar, or anything for that matter. I only one guitar (and one bass), but if I got another, it may very well be this.

This but with soap bar pick ups (like on the asat special, same configuration as the telly just just different pickups), a smaller modern style bridge piece, and a semi hollow body would be my end game guitar.
I managed to snag a closet--kept mid 2010s TM302 for super cheap, many of the specs are the same. After new pickguard and pups its by far my favorite guitar; especially during a math jam!
I feel that about the neck tint personally. I think the thing I love is how the headstock shape matches the curves and shape of the offset body! It’s so pretty, and I think fits much nicer than the fender headstock on the majority of tele offsets. I think the thing that’s not for me (criminal as it may be) is the colour. Not sure why, just not my favourite colour 🤷♂️ Also small side note but thank you for the info on the string gauges! I’ve got a tele tuned solely to DAEAC#E and the strings vibrate an awful lot on the low end, so I think I might make the switch to some higher gauges. On that note, it could be interesting to see you test out whether you can easily play some classic Midwest emo slides, taps, and riffs with different gauges! Could be funny if you tried something crazy like incredibly small or big strings gauges! 😂
I switched to 11s when I started playing math rock style stuff a couple years ago and man is it such an improvement. With lower gauge strings I feel like I'm accidentally bending notes out of tune all the time and it just sounds bad.

I have an original '98 Talman in Mediterranean Green. There are some nice updates on this from those. The main thing I don't like about mine is that the neck is quite thin and narrow. I'd probably like this neck better. However, the neck on mine is a nice vintage amber. 😅 The color and pickup configuration on this one is nice!
Wondering if one of those brass compensated saddle bridges wd give it a bit more twang to the notes... great pickups! Edit: It'd definitely take gain like a quacky thing to wet stuff!
Awesome! I got the YY10 after waiting months and months for it to come in from Japan, it's hard to play anything else now, was a tough choice between the YY10 and YY20 but I already have a nice tele

I think that really came down to the string guages. I should've elaborated more but I feel like I'd end up boring people haha. The tele has 9s vs the 11s on the YY20. Honestly, I'm really surprised at how much more meaty the sound is with 11s

The Talman guitars are great overall. I've played a couple and they all played and sounded excellent. If I were to buy one for myself it would probably be the new Ichika Nito signature model. It ticks all of my boxes for a great modern strat-style guitar (and it looks sweet!).
Looks like the "suggested retail" is about 100 bucks north of where it should be, but its a cool offset that looks comfy and does all the right things.
I've always wanted a Telecaster, but I feel that this Ibanez YY20 is far superior to the Fender Telecaster, at half the price. This just might be the guitar I'm looking for. It just so happens that I love orange sparkle, it's a sign that this guitar is meant for me !!! I also love the shape, with the "sawed off horn" and the contouring on the back side. It's a '3X3' tuner configuration and I wish they would have gone with a '6 in line' Tele style headstock, but that's not a deal breaker for me. I've already got it bookmarked to purchase at my favorite shopping place.
Not sure they’re half the price…Fender Telecasters start at half the price of the YY20. Technically probably a quarter of the price if we’re comparing made in Indonesia with Made in Indonesia ie Squier. Although if this is a Made in Japan model then I obviously retract that, don’t think it is though. Point being I’m not sure it’s fair to compare something like an American Ultra, and claim the Fender is a far inferior guitar and twice the price. Cool guitars though with excellent specs and good value though, no doubt about that! If you get one, I hope you love it.
thanks very much for this video review. The sound comparison with your USA Thinline Tele was really useful . The Talman is my favourite design of all guitars. It’s the perfect combination between the Tele & offset models, imo. I had never noticed the body carve, at the neck/heel plate. I was wondering.. Is it enough..? I mean.. is it as good as, for example, the NDM5 model contoured neck shape, plateless ? Have you ever played the Ichi00 model , or the NDM5 ? They’re cheaper. And the NDM5 has two stacked SD P90s. Thanks again. ;)
How do you get on with the narrow nut - only 41mm? I have trouble enough getting my fingers onto a 45mm neck, but Yvette I'm guessing has smaller fingers.
It's not bad. I have smaller hands, so it's no problem for myself. The neck isn't slim nor chunky, and it's not my favorite for sure, but I can see the practical application of it. 👍
At £1000 in the UK, that's in between the Player and US Telecasters. I have an old Mexican Tele, which I contoured with a belt sander, and I definitely like the ergonomics of this guitar, plus it sounds like a Telecaster!
I like my J-LINE Talman (strat configuration) but I had to order it from a shop in Japan. Seems the only new Talman options on the Western market are the signatures.
I very much like the shape of a Telly with all that comfort cuts, and being right between a single cut and a double cut. I had build my own Telly, customized individual shaped and with comfort carves, out of a kit. I do not like the yellow color of the neck and headstock, I find it unpleasant too. If it was mine, I would scrape off the laquer of the neck, reducing at that point also the shoulders to a soft v, and apply dark amber oil in the back of the neck and pitch black paint on the front of the headstock. 😊
Steve, I know I’ve been bugging you lately… I was set on buying my first Telecaster used but it’s no longer available. As an alternative, the music store I was going to purchase it from had two demoed YY20s at discounted prices. What I’d like to ask is this: had Ibanez not sent you a complimentary one, would you have bought one anyway? Thanks!🙏
Haha, no problem! I don't think I would have. The body shape is a bit too small for me (it is comfortable though!), and the neck shape/finish isn't what I like. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of positives about the model, but I'd recommend getting a player series tele for less money if you're set on getting a tele. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Btw The neck on YY20 is not the same as the older reissue of talman I actually prefer the neck profile on YY20 more even tho it’s thicker, almost felt like AZ neck tbh. The older neck is slimmer and faster, almost too fast for me.
The neck profile is a no to me. The rest of the guitar is very nice and I prefer the comfortable body shape to the standard tele shape. I love that there is no neck dive - I despise neck dive. But, the neck profile ruins the guitar for me.
I'm on the complete opposite side of the tinted neck debate. I'll take a yellow or orange, or amber tint over a plain white maple neck any day. I think the yellow tint looks sort of like some of the japanese maple neck fenders I've seen from the 80s. I think it looks nice, not cheap at all. Plain white maple looks cheap to me... like the affinity maple necks from squire.
Have to agree on the plain maple. Don't mind it on the affinty because they are cheap guitars. However, when you see it on a guitar like the US PRS silversky, I feel like it cheapens the look of that guitar.
depends on the one you get. Mine is quite light, but a fee other considerations: the body is smaller than a tele and I find the less comfortable to play than a tele. The neck shape and feel is more like a gibson shape and feels wider higher up the neck than your regular telecaster C shape neck.

I still have my 90s Talman in silver sparkle. One of my favorite guitars to play, it's among the best body styles of all time. Glad it's gotten its due respect over the years enough that Ibanez brought it back. This red sparkle finish is gorgeous and I love the tone, much warmer and rounder than the Tele comp. Yellow neck ? The MIM Fender DuoSonic has a clear coat maple neck , but it also has a short scale neck which is a plus.

Glad it's gotten its due respect over the years enough that Ibanez brought it back. This red sparkle finish is gorgeous and I love the tone, much warmer and rounder than the Tele comp.
