Thanks man! Although I didn't have my monitors calibrated at the moment (just had bought them). Mic-ing for acoustic instruments, or any instrument for that matter, imo, is best done by listening to your signal source with a well calibrated pair of monitors (or headphones) and tweaking the position until you get the best input possible. I do like placing one large diaphragm on the hole and an SM57 (or Beta58) with a 45 deg angle on the 3rd fret for high-end and fret-buzz (MS also works great).
You definitely set my purchase in stone. After finding out that no reputable sellers actually carry the MXL 990, I've been looking for something similar. This might be it.
wow i record with the gain pretty high and i get as close as i can to the microphone but not to close because i like getting the precusive sound from the strings you can accually do that if you have a microphone from audio technica, well this is a good test anyway just so you know
Glad to help there! I'd point you to the OKTAVA MK319 also. Great microphone for the money. I'll redo a more in-depth review of the 2035 as soon as I get my Babyface. Cheers!
Hey man. That sounds VERY good. Can I ask what software or audio interface you're using? Because I have the same mic, going through FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 into Ableton Live software and it sounds like crap. I've been messin with it for over a week, trying EQs, compressors etc and it sounds low and muddy and quiet. How do you get such a clean normal sound? I'm trying to figure out what's NOT working to fix my sound. And if that's the sound YOU get from this mic, I'm confused.
Hello AiDz0r! I've shot this with a Canon 7D DSLR through a 17-40mm f/4L USM zoom lens. I've added some kind of filter in FinalCutProX (although I now find it redundant and annoying). Audio is straight, though. Will do a better review of this mic as soon as I have some free time. It's a neat and useful large diaphragm, however, given the possibility I'd swap it for a Rode K2 just like that!
My bad, I watched the rest of your video to see some of my questions answered. Sorry about that. I'm just trying to figure out what's making my sound SO bad. I don't get how you sound so crystal. Possibly my audio interface?
Hey Andy! Just keep on tweaking your system in order to get the best raw sound you can. I'm not a strong believer in "I've got Apogee - ergo I'll sound better", but I must say I'm a fan of their AD/DAs and pre's. I have an old MBox 2 as well and that's crisp as well. I'm sure the Scarlett sounds good, too since it's 4 years newer technology. Monitoring also helps a lot - I've got a pair of HS80m Yams and I find them pretty helpful! Best of luck!
Mihai Sarlea Thanks for the reply. The day after I commented on your video, I went to Best Buy to buy a new mic cord. Just thinking "F it!" I read it could be one of the many problems. Guess what, it WAS. I was using a piece of shit cord my brother had. It's amazing to actually be able to hear a clear beautiful sound now! If anyone was having the troubles I had with crap/quiet/muffled sound, try getting a new mic cord!
Andys Videos/Bungle Boy Videos having a good condensor mic as it turns out;is just half the sound battle. Audio interfaces and biamplified monitors are the other deciding factors of good quality sound recordings. I've got the At-2035 coming later this week or next;along with the pre-sonus audiobox 1 interface which goes for $199.99?! I'ts a great deal for the price;and what i've seen and heard on youtube;does very well if ya learn to use it right. It has some of or not more of the same settings that the other guy on here told ya about...Apogee and MBox as well;under sub-menus guy on this audio box one. I don't really trust presnus on monitors;but heard Rockit 6 Ge3's are acceptible;and the New JBL LSR308's are even better than that. most have them for $249.99;but seen a couple of websites have it them for $199.99 each. (Z-Sounds*). Hope this helps man. Take care.
Hi! Hard to say... I prefer the AT, but the Rode is also a good choice. Give a try to the Oktava mk 319 as well or, better yet, the sE Electronics SE 2200 if you're willing to go up to ~220eur.

Gets a bit too bright with the highs, but I'm sure that might be the position or gain?

Howdy! No processing whatsoever. Cheers!
