  • The Airplane From Down Under Is A Proven Trainer…
Jabiru was one of the early light sport aircraft (LSA) brought into the U.S.A. when the sport pilot rules were initiated in 2004. They have long been popular for pilot training in Australia, and while at the Deland Sport Aviation Showcase 2016, ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, found out more about a new model of Jabiru trainer that has been recently introduced to the U.S.
Tom met up with Pete Krotje, who is the president of Jabiru North America which is located in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Krotje says the new Jabiru model is referred to as the J170-D and is a highly upgraded version of the original J170. The airplane is designed with flight training in mind, which makes sense because Jabiru airplanes train a high percentage of new pilots in Australia.
The J170-D is certificated as a special light sport aircraft, which means it is sport pilot eligible, but it is widely used in other countries for training pilots at various certificate levels. In the U.S., it can also be used for pilot training above that of sport pilot level.
In the video, you see lots of detail about the airplane as Krotje talks about its features. Krotje describes the various features of the airplane and discusses its economical performance. It’s a good looking airplane with lots of visibility that looks like it would make a great trainer plane.

These things are great! I've done 5 hours in a 160 and it was half a 172 in all regards except speed. Half the wing, half the weight, half the seats and fuel burn. But it flew so much better! And left hand on the throttle and right hand on the stick feels so right. The 170 has more wing and slightly less top speed but improved stall and low speed flight. More fuel too I think... a better compromise I imagine. They should have toes brakes though. The brakes work fine and are probably a good arrangement for a kit build but I'd go for toe brakes... and I am considered getting one.

Love just about everything about the Jabiru, except tbe control stick. Would be awesome if they offered an optional Rams Horn yoke or side stick controls. T-handle throttle in center console.

75 - 80% of light sport pilots in Oz use the Jabs. ;)

Nothing wrong with the airframe, but I would never fly anything powered by a Jabiru engine. I know 4 people who have had serious engine problems with Jabiru 4 cilinder. One of them did not survive.
