I am very sorry for your experience. Surely s.th. has happened. Ask your landlady either to find out or to give you honest explanation. No reason at all to be afraid of german police. They are not aggressive. Actually they try to deescalate and are pretty helpful and mostly friendly. Good luck to you
From the videos i have seen with you, you are the most lovely person , with the most sparkling eyes i have seen for a very long time. So i would really have a hard time to see why people would be scared by you or would not like you.
I moved from a Großstadt to a kind of village city because the uni I go to is there and people are weird/distant towards me because I’m Southern European. It‘s crazy how you’re judged by your looks especially in those village cities. If you don‘t look northern European you’ll be kind pf an outsider in those places
Duisburg and the surrounding cities (Ruhrgebiet) is the equivalent to the American rust belt. General Motors shut down its second-largest production plant in Europe a couple of years ago.
some people are just dumb. especially closeminded people in small villages... the police being called is usually no reason to be concerned in germany..
I'm very sorry for your weird experience. Some ppl are just ignorant and stupid. Don't be afraid of the police, from what you're telling, you did nothing wrong. Only thing you shouldn't do in those situations, is filming it. People can get more upset and privacy laws are maybe more strict than in the US. If you want to, only do sound recording.
Duisburg's reputation is unfortunately very bad. But in other ciities you will find dirty and terrible "corners". I am sure you will find this even in Cologne, Munich, Hamburg etc. Duisburg hast so much to offer which other cities cannot. For example the world's biggest inland port and the wonderful inner harbour. Or the famous zoo. The urban forest is the third biggest in Germany after Berlin and Hannover! And there are so may other parks. Dusburg is greener than Hamburg, Munich or Cologne!!! You can find so much excavations here in Duisburg. Btw, Duisburg was founded by the franks in the 4th century and was first mentioned in letters in 883. An universtity was founded in the 17th Century...Kopernikus worked here an made maps and for seafaring and globes...... The most people who talk about Duisburg in a bad way were never here to make an own opinion. That's very sad!!!! :-/ Do you love music....than come to Duisburg in June: www.traumzeit-festival.de/
I know it's easier said than done, but I would recommend to just stop thinking about it, who knows what that woman thought. Could have been anything. Maybe there have been break-in's recently and she thought that you look suspicious because you looked into her window when you were searching the nail salon. That tripod sticking out of your bag wouldn't really help in that situation either... But once more, as many people said before: the police is your friend! She wants to call the police? Alright! Go for it, call them. Those are people who speak English and actually can talk with you and explain to you what is going on. Also they won't do anything when there's no proof of a crime and probably reprove that woman for overreacting or whatever. The people were probably just standing by, because they didn't actually see whatever that crazy woman accused you of, but stayed there to "secure" the situation... Ofc, a lot of speculation here by nature...
You really look scared. Even i am surprised how you are able to always keep smiling, but this time you can't hide your mood. No need to worry, we have a saying here "nothing will be eaten as hot as it is cooked". Or better "barking dogs dont bite". So, even if police or security staff try to impress you, they wont do much. Especially to innocent People. Often even guilty persons dont have much to fear. They mostly just check your id and usually you can leave after that. Your story really sound as if something happend nearby. As you say, wrong time, wrong place, maybe combined with incapable security staff. I am pretty sure your host friend will support you or someone of the other persons you already met if you really get into trouble one day. And i am surprised that the Police couldnt speak english. And, ofcourse people notice you. But in a good way. So, dont worry, you will be fine.
Oh, and yes, please keep posting the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Maybe I'm color blind in this regard, but I wouldn't recognize you as black, not even caramel.
What the hell happened?
What about spending more time with your young german friends? You should get more confidence in speaking german.
