The justification to build the T-45 was based upon universally known stupid assumption that a smaller engine would save tuns of fuel and money (lots of back slapping at the contract award ceremony). When the first carrier flight came up the pilot avoided dumping the obviously underpowered aircraft in the ocean, and, surprise, surprise, the bigger engines that were intended all along just happened to be on board, and nobody spoke about fuel savings again to justify the old British aircraft design, and a big financial boost to England. The thicker unnecessary titanium tubing called for in the drawings was only available in England$
