    Okay really small detail, but I appreciate that he introduced everyone as his friends before anything else. Too often I feel bad for the cameramen in videos like this because they’re told to stay quiet and ‘not ruin the footage’. I much prefer this kind of set up where everyone’s contributions are accepted and even encouraged. Great people all around.

      @Kehath definitely not common with big names, and def not on the side of TH-cam that’s occupied by wendigoon and Markiplier, who are some of the nicer people on this site I would imagine. I’m more referring to small-scale variety creators, and tbh I was making a bit of a straw man as I can’t think of any off people off the top of my head. Also almost every video has a camera man, think of any vlog where you don’t hear the guy behind the camera talking.

    • @jackryan4313
      @jackryan4313 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Spot on. The cameramen are always in the background even tho their expertise on film is what majorly contributes to the production. Photography/film is NOT easy and NOT simple by any means. There's a reason you can find tons of videos of pros vs amateurs where the pro has a Walmart setup and the amateur has a Hollywood setup that's exponentially more expensive, and the pro far outclasses them with ease

    9:00 hi chemical engineer here. Those are alarms that operators monitor while the plant runs. The ones that were focused on were for tank level and they indicated if the fluid level was too high or low. The top line was the number designated to that tank. There are likely also ones for temperature and pressure.

      I think this is GTI in Barnwell, SC, and it was a reactor disassembly facility. They were going to build a plant nearby, and got 2 reactors in, but then aborted the plant, so GTI was built for the reactors, and is now a training facility for LEO/military.

      The panel is just discrete I/O indication “LAH-XXXX” is the device tag for a level high switch etc. These are not alarms and this panel would probably always be lit up like a Christmas tree. An operator might consult this panel before launching a procedure to ensure the necessary conditions are met, like a source vessel being full or destination vessel being empty etc.

It was supposed to be used to recycle spent fuel from nuclear reactors, but construction was unfortunately cancelled in the mid 70's. Genuinely an awesome video and a rare view of the interior of a little-known facility! You can find some really good photos from its construction showing these rooms as they were, its pretty fascinating!

    The odd looking window at 26:18 is a radiation-blocking viewing window. These types of windows are used in laboratories that specialize in nuclear chemistry, and the yellow discoloration comes from oil sealed within the different layers of the window. Usually rooms with such windows have no direct access, but the materials inside are manipulated by mechanical arms controlled from outside.

    I’m not sure if Wendigoon would be able to dig up much info, but I would love to see a video about some of the history of this place. Like when it was built; when and why it was abandoned; and maybe about some of the people who worked there!

      He probably could find a lot of info. Massive sites like this cost upwards of a billion dollars to build and take decades, they are huge endeavors. There is probably a lot of information that the government has published and articles from local news papers.

      It's pretty easy to figure out by watching the video, taking note of the surroundings, listening to their conversations, etc.

    Its so cool that the small creator known as Wendigoon found the Wish Granter! Truly, this is one of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. moments of all time.

    At 6:32 the camera shifts back to the hallway and Wendigoon' voice gets muffled and it was so much like a backrooms moment. Haven't even made it past that in the video. Kudos to Chad for great camera work.

    If I'm not mistaken, this is the government training institute. While yes, it was in fact originally built to be a nuclear power plant, it was never activated. Currently it's used for training military and law enforcement, and even airsoft events.

    That room around 12 minutes in where windigoon asked if that was an armory is in fact one. That is a prefab unit to meet naval standards for warships back in the day.

    The window with liquid behind it you found is a nuclear material processing machine called a hot cell. They are used to either inspect nuclear fuel rods or chemically and mechanically process extremely radioactive materials like spent nuclear fuel pellets to separate the heavier than Uranium/Plutonium elements and fission products that are made in the fission process the reactor uses to generate power. These heavier than Uranium/Plutonium elements and fission products are extremely valuable and useful for a variety of scientific, medical, and other purposes. The majority of these elements they extract are worth thousands to millions of dollars per gram, due to their usefulness and the fact that they don't occur naturally on the earth due to their unstable nuclei. Also due to their unstable nuclei, they have extremely small half-life's which causes them to emit deadly amounts of radiation , even in small quantities from far away. Due to the complex nature of the separation process, most machines have to be manually operated by a technician who physically moves the substances around with some kind of manipulator implement, which means they need to be able to see what is happening inside of the machine. This is why there is a window to see into such a dangerous area and not meters of concrete and lead shielding, the glass is lead glass used to shield the technician from gamma rays and x-rays, and the liquid inside is either water, polyethylene, or, more likely due to the age of the facility, a Zinc Bromide solution to shield against ionizing neutrons. Lead Glass has a higher refractive index and dispersion than normal glass, which compounded with the increased difference in optical indices between the Glass and the liquid, causes the large amount of optical distortion you guys saw. The effect is apparently much worse with Zinc Bromide than the other two mediums, which is one of the reasons they stopped using it.
    Some of the compounds the machine could be used to extract and what they can be used for: Cobalt-60, Cesium-137, and iridium-192 are used in radiotherapy to treat cancer, sterilize medical equipment, and used for a variety of gauges and sensors. Fluorine-18 is used to make a sugar that patients can take that will kill certain cancer cells with its radiation and can be used as a trace in medical radioactive imaging. Cobalt-57 is used for calibration of certain devices and is also used as a medical tracer. Iodine-123 is also a medical tracer and is used to take thyroid uptake scans. Americium-241 is to make smoke detectors (yes you have radioactive nuclear reactor waste sitting in your room above you right now). It is funny because people are so scared of nuclear reactors because of their waste's radiation, but it is likely that over 1000 times as many people's lives have been saved by nuclear waste than have ever died by it. If you don't take Chernobyl into account, then it is probably greater than 10,000 times. Neptunium-237 and Americium-241 are also used to create Plutonium-238 to make spacecraft RTGs, which are used to power most spacecraft missions past mars as the density of sunlight at that distance from the sun is far to low for solar panels. Voyager 1 and 2 both used Plutonium RTGs to power them, Voyager 2's is still producing enough power to keep the spacecraft functioning almost 50 years since it launched. I'm kinda surprised they left the machine you discovered somewhat assembled, because they try to limit potential access to machines and designs due to the fact that they are crucial in regular reactor operation and nuclear weapon creation. Would recommend looking up videos of hot cells in use, they are fucking crazy.
