      @@MattChiversWorkshop that's pretty chunky when you are used to 1/4" x 40 🤣

    Honestly, loctite the cover on, spot through, drill and tap. Tenth of the time, result bang on

    You need a Vacuum not a blower for that cast iron dust, you'll be going back in to the house as black as the ace of spades🤣🤣🤣🤣

      Now then Kev, I've got a Henry for the job, air blower is closer though! 😂. Nah don't go in black.... but from the workshop door outside is a lovely rusty colour on the floor!! 😂. All the best, Matt.

      This reminds me when I lived at home with mum and dad. I'd been turning cast iron wheels all Saturday. I was as black as the ace of spades as you infer. Had a soak in the bath to remove the grime. The tide mark it left on the bath when I drained the water drove my poor mum crazy.

    Dear Matt
    Another great video. With respect to your last one, when you made the sheet metal pieces to go over the cylinders, you drilled the required holes with a regular twist drill. May I recommend you track down some "step drills". These are shortish, cone shaped bits with up to 5 or 6 (or more) different diameter sections so one bit can drill holes from say 1/8" to 1/2" in 1/16" increments. I'm sure metric ones are made as well. They are specifically for drilling sheet metal and cut neat tidy holes with minimum burrs etc. I think the smallest diameter available is 1/8", but the largest diameter one I have will cut 1 1/8" diameter. Over here in Canada, Unibit and Lennox are 2 good quality brands. I would emphasize buying only good quality name brands as the cheap imports are not accurate and blunt very easily. See what you think.
    Best wishes from Canada. Paul (ex pat)

    Been trying to keep up with these videos, amazing work i actually am just working on a 2 - 4 - 2 Tinkerbell and am in the Tinkerbell and Variants FB group, i hope to upload pictures this Friday of the progress at the moment (right now its a primed frame and some other rusted parts)

      Thank you, much appreciated. I can’t wait to get this painted!!! The rust is driving me crazy 😬. So you’re building a big one then!! Look forward to seeing the pictures of your progress. All the best, Matt. 👍

    Wow….. those cylinders are humungous eh?
    🤣🤣
    What size is the tapped inlet port? Looked like 1/2” BSP ?
    You’ve done a beautiful job ….. great finishes 👍
    Bloody messy stuff though…
    Regards
    Robert
    PS How are you going to drill the mounting (clearance ??) hokes in the frames?
    Any jigs etc. to align the cylinders with the frame?
    My frames are already drilled, so I can tfr. Punch the cylinder mount holes.
    Only 5” gge., so it’s more manageable… ie., I can align the cylinders using my surface plate/table.
    Anyhooo….. bloody enjoyable as per usual mate 👏👏

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Robert, much appreciated as always. The exhaust port 😉 is indeed 1/2". I've made a drill plate thats the size of the actual cylinder to use on the frames.... once Ive figured out where on the frames they go 😂. Mounting them is going to be an interesting video!! It will definitely be a measure, measure, measure, measure some more, double check, triple check, have a few brews before drilling. 😂😂😂 All the best, Matt 👍

    i'd be interested to see a video on your cleaning regime. i.e from cleaning down lathe bad swarf etc, right up to how regularly the workshop floor gets cleaned etc.

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Really?? that would be a rather boring video 😂. I genuinely keep the workshop relatively tidy. If I'm deep in a job the place will get a mess, but at the end of the job I'll tidy up. Usually sweep and vacuum the floor. Every now and then I'll spray machines over with WD40 and wipe them down. Nothing exciting. All the best, Matt 👍

    Where can a person get the print for the cylinder?

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can buy the castings which are supplied with the drawings from Acorn Steam. 👍

  • @andymottram8546

    When you driled and tapped the M8 holes to bolt the cylinder to the frames you only went 0.56 of an inch. It would appear that you could have gone deeper, without damaging anything, and made tapped.ind holes a lot easier. Any thoughts on this?

  • @schwarzermoritz
    @schwarzermoritz ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Spring loaded tap follower? Anyone? Or is that just for Canadians builing 3.5'' gauge 😅

    • @donotwantahandle1111
      @donotwantahandle1111 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always wanted a tap holder design for a cordless drill. Used on a low clutch setting, it would make tapping holes a lot quicker.

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      @schwarzermoritz, That's a fantastic idea, if I had one at the time of recording. I do not have a well equip workshop, this is a shoe string budget workshop. It has been on my Christmas list all year, and I must have been good 😉. Future episodes will no doubt feature this marvellous invention!! All the best, Matt 👍

    You're slipping Matt... got the cylinders to the stage where there could be a test fitting to the frame and you didn't do it??? or just didn't put it in this video? LOL

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which one of us is slipping?? If you've watched all episodes, you'd know there are no holes on the frames to test fit the cylinders! Plus why spoil it for you!! 😂. All the best, Matt 👍
