I think heavily seasoned foods like this need the seasonings to be tested too. Cheap vs expensive seasoning on both cheap and expensive meats. Could be the biggest difference

    • @emilybilbow4990

absolutely true. The seasoning should be part of the ingredients and there's a big difference in cheap vs expensive spices in my cooking experience and I'm level 100 cooking.

I think you need to try out hamburgers. I know many of the components are the same as tacos, but given it's processed or sliced cheese and not shredded, the various condiments as well as a blind taste test of a basic bun vs a brioche bun to see which ingredients really make a difference. I think the beef will matter even more without it swimming in seasoning.

I’d be curious to see a Brand vs Basic for Bolognese Sauce. It’s a lot of meat with veggies and wine so could imagine the meat might have a similar effect as the tacos but am curious what difference the wine makes after it gets cooked down in the sauce?

edit: I enjoy the twist you`ve put on this, whereas you can see many other creators comparing cheap products to expensive products, food and otherwise, but I like how you put your own spin on it to compare entire meals, very entertaining to watch
I like to see how as you continue to do more videos on your own, you're learning things and listening to input from your community, and as you go the videos just get better and better quality. I believe you will be very big someday, just keep doing what you're doing and having fun with it, cause that is what really matters.

For the next meat based dish to do Brand vs. Basic, how about chili? Or, if you want some non-meat options, how about grilled cheese, hot fudge sundae, or hot chocolate?
Also, I'm curious about the difference the taco seasoning made. You noted when you opened the package that the aroma was noticeably different, and the sauce stuck to the meat better, which likely made a big difference. I might have to experiment!

  • @galacticmechanic1

  • @riuphane
    @riuphane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

One thing that could make this more interesting would be to taste test each combination of all the ingredients. This would have made that a bit easier, but the real question is what are the changes that make the dish as a whole better?
Also, we all like ground beef tacos, but do people prefer ground chicken or ground pork? Sometimes you gotta save money or follow a dietary restriction, so what's the best runner up? I know I have my vote

    @Nate From the Internet
There's a few recipes I'd love to to see compared!
The first would be a stew as I'm curious to see how flavours develop between cheap and expensive when it comes to something that is cooked for a decent amount of time. Something like Coq au vin would be good but feel free to choose any stew that uses any other meat, be that lamb, chicken, turkey, beef, pork, mince... etc. Gulasz/Glouash, Gulas, Beef bourguignon or something like that would be great too!
The other one I would suggest is a Chili con Carne, but do it WITH beans & tomatos (purists will hate us!).

I've been watching each of these as soon as they come out. Please keep up the good work Nate, and editor person too.
I do still wonder how much of the weight the taco seasoning was pulling vs the meat itself. Maybe if you do something like this again, after the big reveal you could have 4 preparations of meat for everyone to try separately. A small amount of each meat with each seasoning. That would clear things up even further.
Since I've seen burgers mentioned in the comments already, and I feel like your judges may be able to guess a cheap hot dog on sight, why not think about brats? You could have cheap vs expensive bratwurst (maybe even cooked in cheap and expensive beers), buns, sauerkraut, relish, mustard, etc.
Also I know it's not remotely the right time of year, so maybe keep this idea in your back pocket for 6 months or so, but what about a full Thanksgiving meal? It would be a lot of work to do two of everything, but you would have a lot of options for sides. Just a thought.

I really do find these videos of yours interesting. I wonder about the possibility of some revisits in the future to see if you can narrow down which single ingrediaent makes the most difference or possibly couple of ingredients and racos look to be a viable option as you have to build them so could select from each. That's just a tought based on the fact that I tend to spend a little (ot a lot) more on meat and veg tends to be from a farm shop as it's generally fresher for around the same price.

    Hi Nate
Was that one of your knives you were using? Just thought it could be a good selling point for you. How would you go with a basic v expensive Charcuterie board? Would love to see this done with cheese toasties/grilled cheese. Home made springrolls, sushi, beef casserole and maybe home made "cowboy" beans. I would get any of your left over taco meat and make a jaffle out of it.

Oh I like that. Charcuterie boards are neat.

Very cool, keep up the great videos Nate! One suggestion I may add, in future videos you should do some research (or maybe you're already doing research) and mention what you find at the beginning of the video.
Example: "today we're testing if more expensive ingredients make a better taco! Before filming today I found these taco recipes from 'this' creator/this chef, they recommend doing ’thing' to get the best results when making tacos. We're going to follow those steps in the recipes today

4:40 a very good thing... use that "bloody" (it's not blood, just meatjuice stuff that has alot of red blood cells) juice for sauces. it's SO good for sauces and that extra kick flavor imo.

When you're making tacos at home... buy a jar of the hottest salsa you can find. When the beef is about 90% cooked, pour in the salsa. (Plus the seasoning.) You want it to be very hot because the hotness will be diluted by the beef and in the end it won't be spicy/hot, just flavorful. Also adding the salsa adds moisture and you can break the meat up more in it so the texture is improved.
Also have scallion as one of the available toppings.
Also get flour tortillas, and fry them lightly (not to crisp, just to slightly browned) before serving. Use butter or lard. I get burrito tortillas because they're big and when folks come to a taco party they want lots of stuff.
After the party, I throw all leftovers together and I have lunch for days. It's good on top of salad too.

When I saw that code... I couldn't help but think it should have been "Internate" so it's Nate and the internet.
You will now forever be InterNate....

Chili would be great, there are so many different ingredients and different ways of making it. My chili is ground beef, kidney beans(drained), chili beans with the juice, onion, a can of corn, noodles on the side so you can add what you want. For a large gathering I left out the corn, and created a chili bar of different additives.

Using a tortilla and cooking it crispy is an overall better experience then taco shells (lots of butter can make them more crispy)

Egg fried rice using the Uncle Roger recipe.
Pasta again but making your own marinara sauce perhaps using directly fresh ingredients vs using canned ingredients as fresh will likely cost more. You may have the extra work of blanching and peeling tomatoes but it's actually pretty easy. Not a lot of ingredients either so it can help narrow things down. Use vine ripened tomatoes however as normal ones may not be sweet enough for a sauce vs chopped or pureed tomatoes in a can.
Loaded fries. Maybe bacon, cheese, sour cream, jalapenos or something like that.
    Ice cream sundaes.
    Pancakes.
    Homemade bread.
Spaghetti and meatballs. (Good use for marinara sauce)
    Meatloaf
    Omelettes.

Since you've got the slow cookers, a stew would be interesting. The way everything mixes together would make it even harder to judge the impact of any one ingredient than with the tacos, but you'd be mostly or entirely eliminating dairy at the same time.
