Fabulous tutorial, thanks so much! The only thing I had trouble with, like several others, it the third tip about re-applying it to another image. "Open any smart object" - from where? Do we first have to save a different photo as a smart object? "Add your image in there" - what image? In where? Are we putting the new photo/smart object in the same file we've just worked on? I feel so dumb! Other that that, the tutorial was really easy to follow.
-To open a smart object double-click on its thumbnail or right-click it and choose Edit Content. -Once you are inside the smart object drag the image you want to apply the effect on. -Resize the image you dragged and position it as you like then press CTRL+S -Get back to your main document, and you will find the effect applied to your new image.
@@Pixivu I wish this final step was explained more, in detail, because I have to do all the steps, I cant follow here. still though nice job and tanks for the help.
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST TUTORIAL EVER I WAS ABOUT TO GIVE MY MOM AND DAD A PHOTOFRAME BUT COULD NOT FIND THE PERFECT PICTURE. THANKFULLY I GOT THIS TUTORIAL AND IT HELPED ME A TON. THANKS A MILLION. KEEP GROWING
Great tutorial. From reading comments, it seems like a lot of people are stuck on the same step and your detailed description does not work... maybe make a video just to show how to copy the effect? This is what you are saying and where I get stuck: -To open a smart object double-click on its thumbnail or right-click it and choose Edit Content. (Where is the thumbnail? Do I go to "File - Open As Smartobject"? Should I have pre-saved an image as a psd and gone to "File - Place Embedded"? Where do I find the thumbnail? Already confused, and obviously not doing it right, cause the subsequent steps are not working) -Once you are inside the smart object drag the image you want to apply the effect on. (Once I open ANY smart object, I take the image I want to have effect on and "place embedded" on the smart object, right?)) -Resize the image you dragged and position it as you like then press CTRL+S (When I hit Ctrl+S it asks me to pick a place to save as psd, it does not apply anything... on your end it looks like it's applying the effects... where is it getting the data from?) -Get back to your main document, and you will find the effect applied to your new image. (What? I see that your original is saved as a jpg all of a sudden and then there is this smart object file and all of a sudden the original jpg is the new file?) We are not able to follow your steps, please spell out differently or make a video on how to do that. Thank you.
I followed this using a bouquet of flowers. I couldn't do the liquify effect obviously but it still turned out great. Great tutorial! Thank you so much!
This video deserves a comment: GREAT JOB!!! Thank you. I appreciate your clear concise speech and real time walkthrough as I can listen most of the time and watch when Im not quite sure where to go. This allowed me to create an action as well so I appreciate that you tell the steps so clearly. Also, thank you for not demanding I like and subscribe before I even see the video and even your sponsor break was executed with precision. You set the standard my man!
Gret video, thank you. I only have one question, how do you apply the filters or layers from tip number one, vibrance, balance and levels, you only show them already displayed but you don't show us how. Think you in advance
This is a really informative video! Thank you! The only problem I had was with your final tip - I couldn't see how you actually applied the effect to another image. I followed what I could, but I really didn't understand how you did it. No success.
great video but I got lost because all shortcuts were based on Microsoft not MAC. Any chance you could translate the shortcuts used. Also, is it possible to explain in more detail how you added an action at the end to cartoonist more photos so quick I couldn't see what you did it was a bit fast.
Oh my goodness, it took me so long to find this video until today! I will take my time and apply the instructions, now I can apply a cartoon of myself. I have found a way to do this. Wow! If I can learn GarageBand I can learn Adobe Photo Shop. This was brilliant.
When I got near the end of the tutorial, you stated to create a High Pass Version by pressing on Alt, Control, Shift and E. I understand that Alt on a Mac is the Option key. But when I tried this, a new high pass layer was not created. Can you help with this please? I am going to use this tutorial create a lot of fun and fantastic images! Thank you SO MUCH! Sue
so while downloading photoshop there is this option that download photoshop or lightroom plan so for cartoon version of yourself what should one opt for?
This was wonderful. But, I followed this and did one more step but I don't remember what I did in that step. I have 19 more pictures in this series to make match this one. But since I saved it as a JPG I can't look at the history to see what I did. Is there a way to find out what I did to my cartoon effect?
Hello , thanks for sharing this useful video. Can you please tell me which software ,code and setting you use for this video ? It's 10 minutes, good quality but very low size.
What did you do with the 'Group' and the Before layer before bringing in a different image? In your ending, suddenly the Group is gone and it is left with the before layer called 'Layer 1'...? Thanks. Everything else was super easy to follow!
the liquify tool doesn't bring out the image and if you try fixing it by unclicking the 'use graphic processor' in the graphics processor settings, the image tends to show but i'll still be unable to edit the faces. please how can i fix it
Hello Melissa, 1-Right click the smart object and choose edit content. 2-Drag your image there in smart object 3Press ctrl+s to update the smart object.
thanks for the turtorial, I have a question. when I apply other image in smart object, the high pass layer still remains the original image. how do I change it?
really love this, but that last step!! I think I managed to do this with some trial and error in a different way though. I opened upon the modified smart image, then clicked on the base layer which I then overlaid with the new image to which I wanted to apply the effects. Then when saving CTRL-S, it modified the original process with the new image underneath. I was careful to save a copy of the modified image so that I didn't mess up my original cartoon... great tutorial, so much to learn!
My friend, just one little detail, when I was replacing a new image in some of the smart object, it works but, I realize, you never tell us what happen with the "HIGH PASS" layer, cause is the only layer that did not change as the other layers cause is not an smart object, so how can I fix this? thank you :)
hi , im not able to see my applied effect from my layer, so im not able to drag the effect from effect layer to outline layer, is there a way to show it? thank you nice tuts
Such an amazing tutorial. Thank you. But can you explain more on how to apply the effect on other image like the last step? Also, can i do it with photoshop cs6? thank you in advance.
I seem to get a brown tinge to everything I make (shadows etc), I noticed when you made your high pass filter mine is a brown/red and yours is grey, do you know why that is? thanks bud
Excellent Training. You took your time and explained everything. I thank you. I subscribed to your channel, and I'm looking forward to learning more. This was awesome.
That last part, to make any image using the same filter. After you say "open any smart object" not only you do not say how to open a smart object, you go way too fast to follow what you're doing. Other than that. What a great video!! Thank you for the tips
I still can’t figure out or understand how to bring in another image and use the previous work to convert with a couple of clicks mate. Not everyone is a pro. Can you explain in more detail?
For the last tip, can I re edit the quick selection tool on the new image that I add ? Which means that I want to use the same filters but the selection of the new added picture will be different.. can I do that and how ?
Yes, Open the smart object, drop you image there, hide other layers, make your selection, press CTRL+S and get back to your main document. The final result will have the final effect on your image with a transparent background(the parts you removed from your image will be transparent).
I love this!...I never really thought cartoon effect could be done in just some simple easy steps, all the other tutorials.i ve seen are mostly using the pen tool to draw over the image and make shapes with colors of the image too...but this is great and easier, thanks man!

Try resetting your photoshop settings from Edit>Preferences>General>click "Reset Preferences on Quit">click "OK". Then restart photoshop and see. This will reset everything to default and should solve your problem, If you have any brushes, actions...etc, export them before restarting photoshop.
The High Pass layer is not linked to the smart object, so when I change the image for another I am still left with the High Pass layer showing outlines from my original image. Is there a way to do the High Pass layer linked to the smart object? If not then it will have to be recreated each time I change the underlying image.
