- We had a great day at the Fred Dibnah Heritage center on one, if not THE last tour before many of Fred's equipment was sold-off at auction. What an interesting place it was and will be sadly missed. For more photos check out our website www.miketurnerphotos.co.uk/fr...

I'm Irish. I had the highest respect for Fred. His work ethic, his manners his knowledge of work history. He came from a time where we all had to make do, improvise, hand me up and downs. Sharing your poverty,. 2021 we now live in the plastic world of throw away. ☘️

I sometimes imagine being able to just hold one of Fred's hammer's and chisel's. All the sweat and hard work he did with them. Hours and hours of toil in cold wet and windy weather row after row day after day"! Very few men in this world can look in the mirror and say they have worked like this!. That's the testament of this man. And it's a very rare Quality ,What true hero's are made of.... Rest in piece old boy!!
I drove past Fred a couple of times when he standing outside of his house and stopped to say hello. He was always cheery and polite. Fred was a clever, talented and courageous man.

For all his hard work risking his life and being on TV it is sad he was almost broke at the end of his life. What an amazing man and story.
He wasn't almost broke. He was nearly one million pounds worth as far as I read about him.
Two of Freds favourite places were Klondyke Mill and Astley Green Colliery Museum. The colliery has the wooden headgear from Freds house which will be reerected eventually. Fred also supported the work of the Northern Mill Engine Society in Bolton which has Freds workshop engine named after his daughters Caroline. If people visit these places they will be learning about the steam age and appreciate Freds legacy and what he stood for.

Might seem like junk to people but this was Fred's life a great man
It's all very sad, i can imagine Fred still tinkering in his sheds even at 80 years old (were he still with us)
Would have loved to seen his place when he was still alive. Wealth of knowledge gone forever. I don’t know what kind of man he really was but he came across as a very intelligent and a likable fellow. Sure wish his legacy could have been saved for future generations to see. I only ran across his videos a couple weeks ago but have watched all I have found.

Yes Mike, this was the last tour before the auction, and as you say a great day if somewhat saddened by the knowledge that all we saw was to disappear. I have been back since the auction and seen the site being dismantled, heartbreaking to see the reversal of all that Fred had built, by himself and with the help of his friends. Equally heartbreaking was that I went to the cemetery afterwards to pay my respects at Fred's grave and whilst older people knew that his grave was there but uncertain of its position, two schoolkids that were passing through did not even know who he was.
Apparently his grave is in view of the back garden, is that true?
I had to make a second visit to find his grave, having looked up images on Google, but from the graveyard I could not orientate myself to locate the house. I'm sure once you spot it it will be obvious, so I may make another visit with my walking Sat Nav with GPS compass to orientate myself, certainly Alf said that the grave could be seen from the area where they were firing the arrow when they tried to obtain the needed depth of the mine to come out at the riverside.
Why didn't the council buy this and keep it as a museum it would have made money, just imagine all the official tours by schools from all around the country and particularly the North West etc. Such a loss.
cannot believe they sold all his stuff , i only found out about the heritage centre tonight , ive always watched fred dibnah since i was a young kid and loved every video and im only 21 , would of been good to let the kids see what went on in the past to get them where they are now , i would of loved to go here RIP FRED

Would have been Sir Fred Dibnah by now, for services to British industrial heritage.
He got an MBE, as you say should have got a knighthood. They give you a 'Sir' for knocking a tennis ball about but someone who did so much to promote engineering to the young of this country did not. Sadly the real reason was he wore a cloth cap and had dirty hands, snobbery still exists everywhere at the top in this country. What Fred would have made of the state of things now I dread to think.
National Trust or Government should have stepped In Here, This All should have been preserved for the NATION!

It's sad to see the place so quiet, the potential left go, youngsters could have first hand experience of times past instead of reading about the industrial revolution they could see steam engines in action, what a shame imagine the stories told in that yard in past yrs

Yes, most of the items were sold off at the auction. The bloke who tried to run the Heritage Centre as Fred had intended was blocked by one of the ex wives and it became unviable to continue.
Taserrazer he’s selling bolts from Freds shed on Ebay for near 15 quid and pieces cut from one the boilers too

I have seen alot of Fred videos and they really pulled me into his world, I admired and respected him for who he was.
A mans man, straightforward.
But life goes on........it's just a sad fact.
Thank you for posting this. What a substantial home Fred has and an amazing yard of his workshops and steam engines. It must have been one noisy place when Fred had his steam engines running. Every time I see a video about Fred I really regret that I never met him. An amazing man. So sad they just sold off his things. No doubt a greedy ex wife looking for profit. As I have relatives in London, I hope to visit his grave someday when I visit the UK again.
I don't think it was as noisy as many people might suspect, especially when you think how much noise modern DIY'ers produce with their electric gadgets. I too never meet Fred to speak to, but did see him at a Steam Fair when he was becoming famous and he was a Celebrity guest. No profit for an ex wife, but the Heritage centre did cease operation due to obstruction by an Ex wife. Would suggest you goggle images of Fred's grave prior to a visit to get an idea of its location as locals are not as aware of its location as you might expect, particularly the young. (See my comment to Mike).
I do know that his last wife was excluded from the will so this would have left a very unsavoury taste to deal with,in my mind she supported Fred while he was alive more than most even to the very end when selling off workshop swarf to raise funds for a working steam vehicle in his name,so perhaps she saw the profit being made from his death as not nice,which when you look at it makes sense that non members of the family were making money while she was being ignored ? it is all very sad and we will probably never know the true story.
Melvyn O'Connell Thanks for your reply. It actually must have been a grand noise hearing his steam engines chuffing away when he was running them. Not offensive at all. I think his problem was he was born a hundred years too late much to his chagrin. An amazing and brilliant fellow. His work should have been preserved for all to see so that they could really appreciate the brilliance that helped build the modern world so many take for granted. Fred have us all a great gift.
Angel Reading Thank you. Sounds like no matter how you slice it, it all ended up rather sadly. We will just have to celebrate the man that he was in life. If I make it back to the UK I will be sure to put some flowers in his grave and take a ride by his old house.

Ive seen other videos of this, and I have to say what a disgrace. No respect given by those to this great man, surprised not really RIP Fred
from what i have read i understand that the people own or owned Fred's home and back garden tried to return his steam powered workshop to steam by getting a new boiler for the steam engine that powered it and when it was clear that would never happen they then sold off all of Fred belt driven workshop tools?
should never have been sold off shame on english heritage at least we still have freds place on film mmmmmm i suppose it will just get bulldozed into the ground mmmmm

It's a sad fact, but when YOU are dead & buried , your families will be picking at your bones as well (as long as you've left behind anything of value).

So does the Heritage centre still exist ? have they torn the heart from Freds hallowed workshop,and what about the listed building house ?
The Heritage centre is gone and the vast majority of the items were sold at the Auction. I went back a few weeks after the auction and the site was been dismantled, heartbreaking to see as I was on this last tour that Mike has video-ed which was shortly before the auction. The house is still listed and will remain, but the pithead, sheds and items within have gone.
Thank you Melvyn for that confirmation,so sad that a national treasures cherished workshop has been dismantled in this way,Freds memory in the very place he worked and a lot of the filming was done is all but a ghost of its former self then,thank goodness that we have his memories recorded here so we can still honour him and remember him for what he was a true character and a fine hands on engineer in every respect.
See your questions already been answered. So sad, just happy I got to see it before it disappeared. What a magical place

@@eliotreader8220 The empty sheds & chimney were still there as of August 2021. It has a new owner now as Leon Powsney managed to sell the house for £265,000 in Feb 2021, plus the money from plundering Freds stuff & other schemes such as the spot the ball competition (look it up). His sons should have had that and what a sad sight. All his flat belt machinery just doing nothing and his steam engines sold off. They are what made the place. This is just the scraps at the bottom of the barrel
Where's Fred's wife, sons, and so call best friends, why haven't they moved in to Fred's house and Work shop

So so sad thort his lads would have looked after all his belongings wot happened to Fred's landrover does anyone know that place should b a beautiful museum and English heritage looked after it
I'm pretty sure his youngest son has the land rover and his roller.
I think Freds daughters got the two Landrovers. They can still be seen on show at the Astley Colliery Museum & at some steam shows along with his two steam engines. His sons got Betsy but the family was forced into selling the house & traction engine as Sheila wanted the money. She also supported Leon Powsney opening the so called heritage centre.
What a shame you did not know how to use a video camera, a wonderful opportunity missed.

The family seem to hate Fred Dibnah they waited 4 years before selling all of his stuff why didn't the family keep it and live in his properties it's clear they all became money grabbers. I feel sick with how ungrateful they are ready dimmer work extremely hard and inspired many people I could have shown in some gratitude because I would have walked in his footsteps best I could in modern society but surely would never sell anything valuable to him or me
