Ryan: Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today, on our 2019 Kia Niro, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install the Tekonsha T-One vehicle wiring harness. So one of the best things about this wiring, is that it's not going to be visible, or out in the elements whenever you're not using it, and that's because it's actually stored inside of our Niro. Whenever you are ready to use it, super easy. Open up the hatch, we flip up our floor covering here. We're actually going to have it stored out of sight and out of mind, inside of the vehicle, protected.
But with that being said, whenever we're ready to hook up, all we have to do is drape it over our threshold. Anywhere along the threshold is fine, as long as there's weatherstripping, with one exception. You want to be sure to avoid the latch here, because if the wiring does get caught in this, it could potentially get damaged. We'll close the hatch, and then we're going to have more than enough length to hook up to our trailer, or maybe even a light-up accessory. So the wiring is going to provide us with the necessary lighting functions to not only be safe, but legal as well. Now, one of the best things about this wiring is the fact that it uses a module box, and that module box is very important.
It's going to protect your vehicle's factory wiring if a short or an electrical issue we're to occur on the trailer side. And that's really important, because especially with today's vehicles, hybrid's a prime example, the electronics can be really sophisticated, and that's really not a road you'd want to go down, having to repair or figure out your factory wiring, if a issue we're to occur. So the wiring kit's going to be really well built. The wires are going to be bonded, and nice and thick, so it should last a long time, even down to the dust cover. Really thick, and you shouldn't have to worry about it cracking or anything else. Now, even though the dust cover does protect our terminals, I do recommend from time to time to apply a little dielectric grease on them, just to kind of go that extra mile.
Since the dust cover is attached to our four-way too, what you can always do, say if you maybe drop your trailer, plan on coming back in an hour or so to pick it back up, if you want to, you can always just wrap your cover around the safety chain opening on your hitch, and store it outside of your vehicle for the time being. That way, you don't have to pull it back out whenever you go to hook back up.The wiring is going to have a power output of 4.2 amps per circuit for your stop and turn signals, and 7.5 amps per circuit for your taillights. So more or less what that means, is it's not going to have any issues powering up an older trailer, say with incandescent bulbs, or even a newer one with those LED bulbs. But overall, at the end of the day, a great safe way to light up your trailer or those accessories, and it can be done pretty easily. As far as the installation goes, it's really not too bad.
I'd say the most time consuming part at least, is having to run the power wire from the back, up into the engine compartment. But I'll show you the path that I took, and how I did it. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and hook everything up together now.To begin our installation, we're going to be working here at the back of our Kia, and what we're going to need to do is open up our hatch, and remove our floor covering inside. And we can also pull out this foam storage compartment, and set this to the side as well. If you come over here, we're going to have to take this little compartment out, and so, we're going to have three Phillips head screws. So you're going to remove all of those. We can lift up on this, and get it out of the way. And over on the other side, we can do the same thing. We'll pull out those three screws. Now, from this point on, anything we do to one side of our Kia, we're also going to do to the other side, because it'll be set up the same way. With that compartment out of the way, it's going to expose another Phillips head screw, so we'll run that out. And if you kind of move to our threshold here that runs along the back, we can pull up on that, and set it to the side. It kind of just pops out, if you pull up on it. We're going to have one more screw here that is underneath our threshold, and get that pulled out. And then if you kind of move up our panel here, where it splits and changes color, what I'm going to do is take a trim panel tool, and just kind of pry on that panel to pop it free. Once we have it released like that, it'

Not clear which terminal. My Kia Soul 2019 looks different and your video does NOT zoom in enough or explain which terminal

anyone know where to run the power wire on an EV version? Will anywhere get too hot for the wire?

You would want to run the power wire the auxiliary battery.

Any chance could you tap into interior power towards the rear of the vehicle instead of running the cable to the battery? (taillights or trunk/cargo light)

Can you do that? Sure. Should you? No. Installing the harness with the power feed coming directly from the battery per the instructions will isolate the vehicle's electrical system from any problems that happen with the trailer wiring. Hope that clears things up for you. Check out this article:
