You guys are killing it with this series. And your writing and editing have just continued to get better throughout. Thanks so much for helping to curate and share these artists and their work. There's so much about the internet that is either vapid or downright harmful, but it's this kind of content which shows where the better angels of the technology might reside.

Great video about a wonderful man, thank you Warren! I heard How High the Moon as a kid and really thought it was an orchestra of guitars and a choir of voices. That slapback echo! Les was also a mentor to pioneering engineers like Al Schmitt and Tom Dowd, and I love the way he and Chet Atkins played together. Gonna play my goldtop now . . .

Thanks Warren When I was a very young boy I got to see Les Paul and Mary Ford live with a state fair/livestock show ticket. The Paulverizer on his guitar blew me away!!! Saw Roy Clark the next year who gave Pat Matheny one of his first Pro gigs. The Baja Marimba Band (Herb Alpert) said my sister would have been here but she drank some of your water. Good artists play State Fair Shows sometimes!!!

I met Les Paul backstage at the Iridium in 2004(?). I saw the 1st show of the night and they were trying to get us out of there, but I ducked backstage and introduced myself to him. My dad had seen him at a Boy Scout Jamboree when he was a kid. I mentioned this to Les and he instantly recalled, "oh yeah, the scouts all had flashlights shining as we played. That was the day before I went to visit Eisenhower in the Whitehouse." He was so cool and sharp as a tack. I do have a photo, thankfully!

Great video, I will always be mad at myself for not going to see Les perform at the Iridium where he’s spent his last years playing every Monday with the Les Paul Trio and many of the guitarists you mention. In 2013 I became the audio engineer at the Irdium and recorded so many great shows many of which were in dedication to Les, like Steve Vai and Satriani for Front and Center. Zakk Wylde did a show as well and he played with the Les Paul Trio and Anton Figg was the drummer for the show but he was working at the tonight show so he couldn’t make sound check. I was hitting the kick for the FOH mixer and Zakk turned around and counted me in. So I played drums with Zakk and the Les Paul Trio for three or four tunes. I am not a drummer! … Great times.

A lot of young people don't understand how it all it began..thanks again for sharing...We all try to do something on this planet..but when it comes to multitrack recording ...It all goes back to Les Paul. All of us users using current technology ..was based on Les Pauls genius. I edit to add just a big thank you!

Les Ford is on tape, having discussed that his 8 track idea was turned down by a manufacturer on the east coast, so Les's friend suggested that he had an air fare ticket to San Francisco. Les asked, what is in San Francisco, and the friend replied, Ampex. Les went to San Francisco, pitched the 8 track, and Ampex gave the go-ahead. The guy was a sound genius, and there is always someone around that wants to cash in on a good idea.

I took a look at the history of 8-track recording after a question about music of 1965 on a (Dutch) quiz. Of course in Europe after the war it was so different. "The Beatles groundbreaking Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band LP (1967) was created using pairs of four-track machines". "It was during The Beatles' recording of their White Album sessions of late 1968 that Abbey Road Studios finally had eight-track recorders installed. Until then the group went to Trident to record with eight-tracks". A good example of how the music in 1965 was sometimes full stereo 8-track, but often l/m/r 4-track (those old Abbey Road mixers - I hate those!).

Not just the name on an expensive guitar. Everytime you use a DAW to overdub your part, you should thank Les Paul. Plus, if you'd given him a distortion pedal and he would have competed with any guitar hero you care to name. One of the best ever.

"How High The Moon" is one of my favorite jazz songs to play. "Chester And Lester" is definitely a MUST have for any serious guitarist. You know, Warren, us Gen Xers are THE generation to see technology go from the old to the new. I remember how expensive it was to put together a studio and now I work with musicians who simply have a laptop and software like Garage Band and I feel like a DINOSAUR. Think I'll go move to Skull Island. Les Paul was TRULY one of the monolithic pinnacles of guitar. I know how Jimmy Page was really obsessed with him and Les had very high praise of Jimmy. When I met him, I asked, "What do you think of Jimmy Page?" He said, "On a scale of 1 to 10? He is the A #1 guy." Would be nice to see some really great innovators of today who are accomplishing even 1/4 as much. I'm sure they're there, just not in the mainstream for some reason.
