      Good question. The CB has more punch with the mighty gauss but also costs quite a bit more… the machine guns are wasted space on the BW, but the AC10/erllas is a nice tandem!

    The mythology is that there was a magic cauldron which the Irish possessed, and you could steep a slain warrior in it, which would return the dead to life so that they could fight again.
    The Chronicles of Prydain, by Alexander Lloyd, was a fantasy series based on Welsh mythology that depicted the idea really well and gave rise to the notion of the Cauldron Born as immortal.

    • @richmcgee434
      @richmcgee434 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those same books were the basis for the old Disney film the Black Cauldron, which is still a pretty good watch even 37 years after its release. Not a wholly faithful adaptation and takes some liberties with the original myths, but worth a look if you wanted to familiarize yourself with the basics of the legend. There are several gaming companies that offer 28mm cauldron-born minis for various fantasy or RPG uses - notably Alternative Armies and Brigade Models.

      @@jimbelaco4 Well, not by me, but I get the drift. Like most fantasy films I kind of ruined it for myself by reading the books first, but as an adaptation goes it's pretty good and holds up very well on its own.
      I didn't walk out of it regretting how much was left out the way I did with Princess Bride - which is still a good film but man, people who haven't read the book are shorting themselves.

    I'm one of those guys who always calls Clan 'mechs by their proper Clan names...but "Cauldron Born" is so much cooler sounding that "Ebon Jaguar".
    Anyway, I'm a big fan of the A and B configurations. The A has ER larges to fence with ranged foes and the good old UAC/20 beatstick for in-fighting. The B is like a poor man's Warhawk C. It can't afford to alpha strike, but it has a gun combination for every range band and hit number. The newer configuration G from the ilClan guides is also a lot of fun. It is a no-nonsense machine with two big slap-your-face guns and no need to say sorry afterward.
    Keep up the videos! The Battlytics series is awesome.

      I find its sort of a mix about which name is better. Fenris sounds a hell of a lot more intimidating than Ice Ferret for example and fits the units role as a hunter better. Whereas I prefer Fire Moth to Dasher and find things like the Dire Wolf/Daishi to be a wash.

    • @jasonduncan2814
      @jasonduncan2814 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BlitkriegsAndCoffee I agree about the Fenris/Ice Ferret. The Clan name is certainly more poetic, but a sun-eating wolf-god is going to win out every time. I’m of a similar opinion on the Vulture/Mad Dog. That being said, I saw a dire wolf skull at a museum when I was a little kid and that night I dreamed about being stalked by one. For my own part, that name will always be intimidating!

    Considering that the Cauldronborn is a very squat 'Mech - even according to Sarna it has the Low Profile design quirk - the low leg armour is not unsurprising. And as I recall the reason it was made to 'replace' the Hellbringer was that the older OmniMech still runs Standard armour as opposed to Ferro. The lighter mass of the new armour on the Cauldronborn just allows for more mass allocation to weapons. Yay weight saving technologies!

  • @louiskemner3216
    @louiskemner3216 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm partial to the Cauldron-Born E, and I use it all the time in my Clan forces in games (often a company vs a binary). The E variant feels like an improvement over the prime, and has high-tech weapons like the HAG 20 and ATM 12. That ATM means the Cauldron-Born can do some damage from afar, then do a LOT of damage up close, as opposed to an SRM 2! And the large pulse and HAG 20 have pretty good range on par with any LRM launcher. Plus it retains an ER medium laser just because. Great variant, and it puts most of the others to shame.
    All that said, though, I also like the D variant.

    This is another clan mech that I've never really paid that much attention to because I thought it was weird looking. Coming from the battletech/roguetech video game, I adore the Ebon Jag. A build with a UAC/20 and some ER MLas (basically config A) lasted me into late game and I cored many assault mechs with it. I am looking forward to running it on the table, even if UAC rules aren't super devastating. Some of the official clan designs suffer from eclectic mixes of weaponry or lack of design focus.

    One thing I'd like to see on Battlytics would be a "How much armor do you *really* need there?" episode or maybe mini series. I see lots of mechs score varying levels of death/death spiral to headshot or CT, motive hits, engine crits, etc. I know they go up against the beefy 10 damage chunks from the Awesome's PPC, but maybe some tests could be run against alternate weapons like AC2/5/10/20, LRM's, SRM's, lasers etc as a stand alone. One theory I've been kicking around is that it's likely statistically irrelevant to have 9 points of armor on the head, 8 would likely do in almost every case because even a PPC/AC10/Clan ER Large only does 10, and a cockpit with 8 armor + 3 structure would survive, and most incidental damage that would turn that into a kill would also do so for a 9 armor + 3 structure cockpit, for instance a stray SRM2 or Machine gun or AC2 hit. I can't think of many 1 point hits outside of LRMs with abysmal clustering or LB Autocannons using cluster rounds. Maybe HAGs but I have never played with them. Is it worth it to drop that one point of head armor to up armor the CT? Just one hypothetical such an episode could answer (potentially).

    I would really like to see the gauss distribution based on weight class. It seems like the efficiency score favores heavier mechs and it would be great to see. Maybe do a video comparing different curves of different roles. Is the standard deviation on clan or is higher? Is the mean of the distribution on lights always lower than assaults? That would a cool thing to see!

      @DeathfromAboveWargaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Email me if you want to run this analysis! I can pull the raw data!
      I do think the efficiency being better on heavier mechs speaks to what I call the overweighting of speed in the BV calc. It is very evident in clan mechs… so lights natively get penalized more because they fit even less.

      Analysis on the Battletech forums has called it "near perfection in Mech Form." Super accurate PPCs to rip off armor and force PSRs at any range, ATMs to crit seek (or push a single 15 point PPC hit into PSR range).

      It is unfortunately similar to a lot of my experience (and also battle reports). A little extra range and speed only gets you so far. A good tactical player can really make great use of greater numbers, especially when the clan mechs are way overpriced to begin with.

      @@DeathfromAboveWargaming im thinking some the less fancy 2nd line clan mechs is actually the way to go with clans if you want to win

    They need to bring back Blaine Lee Pardoe. He's the *Whole Reason* we have any of this new resurgence in Battletech.
    As for the CB, it's way better than the Hellbringer, but that armor is terrible. For some reason I see a Warhammer build but with LPL, MPL, no SPL, sorry, it stinks. Then a SSRM6 and lots of DHS.
