I was warned in college that plagiarism would be dealt with severely and that the university had anti-plagiarism software to catch offenders. We were threatened with the possibility of expulsion if we were caught. If an ordinary student has to face this penalty, why not those in a position of power?
Same here. I copied a couple of paragraphs in a crappy essay about the Challenger disaster in my English Lit 102 class, and, the professor had a "serious talk" with me about how she was "only" going to make me repeat the class instead of expelling me. I was otherwise a straight A student with a 4.0 GPA in science, and I made a simple mistake due to lack of time and not understanding how "serious" this would've been for me. It was a wakeup call for me... And now...here we are. It doesn't even matter anymore, apparently.

@The_Algorithm_ You SERIOUSLY need to keep up. Biden had to drop out of the presidential primary in 1987 for plagiarism. Perhaps you should have asked Siri before calling me out for a subject you obviously know nothing about.
@The_Algorithm_ she's either a DEI hire or a scam artist take your pick. You don't "accidentally" plagiarize an entire thesis so either they didn't recognize it when she got the job or they did and hired her anyway and the only reason I can think of if they did was to check a box. Whether you want to admit to it or not that is the reality of it when symbolism outweighs substance.
@The_Algorithm_ on top of that once her plagiarized thesis was outed and they knew she essentially forged it they STILL didn't want to fire her. That speaks volumes.

Gen Z: We, your elders, have already decided your college degrees are worthless. What you actually DID learn is stuff we need to deprogram anyway. Now pay off your loans and be quiet.
Why don’t these people cut to the chase? (Oh, wait, I forgot- it’s a media interview!) Let’s take the overarching rule for getting and keeping a secure job in academia: publish or perish (whether there’s anything worth publishing or not). That’s been the commandment I first heard while an undergrad, and it was part of my distaste for a career in academia, despite being prompted to do so. (I taught in the public schools for >30 years, never looked back, never a regret.) My point is, that with X thousands pursuing advanced degrees and subjects for original research becoming ever more esoteric, plagiarism is simply inevitable. My most surreal experience in graduate school was when attending the introductory session of a class where the professor made it clear that one of our major assignments in the class was to steal other people’s bibliographies. I secured a drop slip so fast it almost caught fire….
Great story on the strategy switch! I think it would be insightful to see Harvard's legal team provide factual statements that ultimately show students should not be expelled for plagiarism! It's not illegal it's just a standard that is enforced for students but not faculty. It's a fair standard, but should be universally enforced within the education system.
I have watched Dr. Swain previously, and I agree with her on academic integrity, including faculty and students. Especially faculty being honest and non-biased, because that is a real problem.
Too easy re. Dr. Gay. It is a DEI thing. If one is motivate to hire someone based primarily on their identity and not their merits, then perhaps one doesn't vet someone like they should be vetted.
Claudine Gay destroyed my soul! She redistributed my heart and soul. Crushing me for being white and a man who is intelligent. A man who is talented and had god given talents!
At my work, we look for science degrees from large state universities. I snuck in with an Ivy League degree, but these are not respected anymore for actual knowledge. And I’m not as smart as the state school grads.
I don’t like programs that drop a big reveal at the end of an interview and then talk for a while saying no time left I’ve got to end it there blah blah blah, and never give a chance to hear a response. It’s more unethical than plagiarism

Only 10% of everybody is in the top 10%. That is the only segment of the population that can handle "real college'. We graduate 30%. If they are POC, they need to be investigated. DEI has made it possible for completely unqualified people to get into places they have no business being.
They kick out students for plagiarism, but they keep a professor for the same thing.

They will let it slide if DEI is involved.
