Ultrasound is usually the first-line imaging study performed. This typically shows a solid mass arising from the kidney. Both CT and MRI are equally accurate for detection of locoregional spread. While doppler ultrasound evaluation of the renal vasculature and inferior vena cava is the traditional choice to detect vascular extension, modern CT and MRI are also sensitive and specific in this regard, resulting in many clinicians omitting Doppler studies in the evaluation of these patients.
