I hope Manaal and his team does well. The Savarna hegemony in the Indian comedy space is not just tone deaf to caste realities but are unapologetically hypocrites. They mention Chappelle, Pryor and Carlin as their heroes but completely leave out how they ALWAYS QUESTIONED WHITE HEGEMONY. In India, UC comedians carry their privilege like swagger instead. They in fact bond over it. I went to a few live shows of some popular ones.. decided I won't ever buy a ticket to their shows again. Its really an exclusive club of urban savarnas laughing at their own insider jokes. There was a househelp joke that really got me. Just an absurd joke on making too much eye contact with a 'maid'. I still don't understand what was so funny about that...But ofc... Ramu kakas and kanta bais were always a punchline in Indian pop culture... how do you make a joke on a defenseless community? He would not say this joke even in front of his house help but it works inside the elitist safe space of Indian comedy. I hope a day comes when Bahujan comedians can joke and bond over their collective trauma just like Black comedians do. Jai Bheem💙
