Bloomberg Turnaround: Qantas

  • Against a backdrop of slumping profits and debilitating industrial action, in October 2011 Qantas CEO Alan Joyce grounded all the airline's planes in Australia and around the world. Bloomberg's David Tweed looks at how Joyce's drastic actions then were instrumental to the revival of Australia's national carrier and what drives his decision-making today. (Source: Bloomberg)

Only in Newspeak would you consider a leadership team where approximately 47% of the population, namely straight men, aren't represented to be "diverse".
My late partner worked for Qantas for nearly 20 years. She worked on the level below Joyce's office, and said he was what you'd expect from anyone who reached that position; driven, ambitious, workaholic. She said the place had its ups and downs, but the support she received from HR leading to her leaving due to terminal illness (an unfortunate term in an airline video, lol) couldn't be faulted. They even offered her voluntary redundancy so she could get a payout.
Like most large businesses there will be fans and haters. The turnabout spoken about in this video certainly is impressive in hard financial terms. As with any large changes, however, some will feel they were unjustly screwed. Joyce is certainly correct about it not being a popularity contest.

He may have looked after your wife, and I offer my sincerest condolences for your loss, but if she did not support his ideals he would have left her for dead.... @raptorshootingsystems3379 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Weiss
There are many CEOs in the USA who cut their salaries to $1 per year and took stock options and grants instead of salaries. Two notable examples are:
Gordon Bethune at Continental Airlines back in the 1990’s. He then turned Continental around from worst to best before he retired.
Steve Jobs did this at Apple when returned in 1997.
When CEO’s do this, they go to true performance based pay. Of course, that performance is based on what they can do to increase revenue and earnings that increase stock prices. Unfortunately, this is a double edge sword because to turnaround a floundering company often requires reorganization and cuts to expenses including cutting employees since payroll and benefits is often a major company expense.

Instead of saving, qantas has to think about making (increase profit) because the percentage in this side would double or triple which range between (20% - 30%).

One sided falsely upbeat video.. There are only two main domestic Air carriers in Australia.. one is the international Virgin carrier which has been around under two decades, where as Qantas is regarded as a national icon so has firm support. I believe they dont even make money on international flights due to the competition. All he did was some basic restructuring, and the lower oil prices, operating as part of a duopoly, lower AU dollar, increased rate of air travel, Australia private debt fueling expenditure on air travel etc - is the bigger factor.

    • @ok-re1md
      @ok-re1md 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Exactly, plus he sold Syd domestic terminal and chucked the money as profit, hasnt upgraded the fleet for a while, sold newer A330's to RAAF for a generous price and bought older A330's instead. their terminals are shit, planes old, food is garbage, they only care about business class customers, but at the end of the day its not their fault, Unions are evil and over the top free market for internationals is ridiculous. without firm public support Qantas would fall apart in a year and lower AUD that he is celebrating makes new planes more expensive so their fleet age will keep increasing.

Not to mention with not having to cope with the rude and intolerant practices of backward destinations that lack civility . Oh . And also not Supporting thar TRAITOR Joyce and how he has run down our flagship . Well the Air France liner still had wings and engine attached on landing . Unlike Emirates or qantas kites . No crappy halal fare that gives a commission to ISIS either .

Then on hold to the outsourced Qantas call centre for over an HOUR!!! DO NOT FLY THIS AIRLINE!! I have a friend who is one of their flight attendants and she agrees this airline has gone to the DOGS!

I admire what Joyce has achieved, especially when he stood up to the Unions and grounded the fleet. I wish he would leave his gay and lefty politics out of it though. What do these gay issues have to do with an airline ? Obviously it's a personal passion since he is openly gay, but it' should have nothing to do with running an airline. As for the quality of Qantas food, I had to laugh. In economy it's the worst I have experienced compared to any airline. Sometimes inedible. On a recent international trip I gave it back to them while flying in one direction, and did not accept the food upon my return trip. It was disgusting.

    • @seanl8587

    • @KiedisHaze

@Global Aviation News Center If Qantas were to replace all of their domestic and short intl 737s with the A320neos, the cost of training will skyrocket. Qantas may have previous A320 pilots (first I'm hearing about them), but it won't be nearly enough to replace all of the pilots flying the 737 right now.
