    WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
    Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
    HEAT TREATING:
    Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
    Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
    Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

    Such sharpness I've never touched until jasper. It makes a scalpel look like a butter knife. I was cut by one of those flakes on an archiological dig. The archeologist said the flakes were from around 3000 years ago! Still micron sharp. I Bled pretty bad.

    Very interesting analysis of the material. Thank you.
    It certainly responds well to a strong ridge and good support, you can make some really game changing flakes. Using this I've been trying to thin bifaces aggressively and early to avoid the problems with termination, but I still need a lot more experience.
    Looking forward to part 2.

    There's a whole lot of flint over here, and it was a huge export in the Neolithic age. No need to worry too much about divulging locations because it's literally everywhere :)
    Finding such beautiful pieces without huge inclusions takes searching though.

      Amber color flint in Denmark has usually taken color from the surroundings, and is grey/black inside. Helgoland has a famous red flint

    The dull stuff in the middle is a big fat tough spot. That's why it's doing the weirdness. It's like ninja concrete, it takes pretty thick flakes to push through the stuff if you're striking on the glassy material. I try to avoid the middle when knapping senonian.

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmm

      @NarheimArmoury 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@KnapperJackCrafty The hard spots in this flint seem to make the flakes want to deflect around instead of just stepping. Sometimes there's small concrete pockets in the middle of the rebellious lumps, but you only find out once you cut through or snap the piece. It took me a lot of swearing to figure out the problem

    Pat is that just mild steel you used to spark that flint? Also is that one of Danny’s boppers? If so how you like it?

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This particular steel for creating sparks was hand forged from high carbon steel, so it's not mild steel. I received it as a gift so I don't know the exact carbon content. And yes, I used one of Danny's boppers, and I like it. The handle is very light, with the weight very much in the tip, which is great.

    Smoking is good! I limit myself to just a couple of cigars per day. I just don’t smoke while I’m knapping. I end up wasting a cigar. Not to many points that I find out in the wild are not as thin as the ones we knap. And once again smoking is good.

      The unicorn rocks are the ones that are thin enough for the good material from each side to meet up in the middle, while still being large enough to be fun. This one was pretty close. Of course if you don't mind knapping small stuff there is a fair amount of really thin stuff of extremely high grade. Like 10 x 5 x 1 centimeter rocks.

    I would call that a 6.5 out of 10 flint, like most things in life finding perfection is not easy, and not necessary to survive:)) there is better flint and worse flint here in Denmark, most rock have a little something installed just to piss you off:)) and the piece you have will snap if you a too stubborn with it in a thin state. Always enjoy watching, Thanks!

      I think in the south of europe we would call that a 9 out of 10 flint. For example, here in Spain finding tabular pieces with that level of homogeneity an quality is currently impossible. How relative things are hahahaha

    pretty much the entire east coast from denmark to northern france and then over to southern england is made of flint and chalk , there is plenty plenty , perhaps not all this good but there is so much it could supply modern knapping for another few thousand years if exploited . in england where they quarry limestone and chalk/clay they have spoil heap mountains of flint the size of multiple story buildings as a quarry bi product . they sell some as building stone usually by the ton bag for a cheap price . the issues arise with local laws in different nations . for example in england it is technically illegal to remove stones from the sea shore which is usually owned by the crown estate but on private property flint may be gathered from the surface or dug from the ground . in denmark i am not sure but i know they are very strict with most things . there is probably a reason why there isnt more of this rock on the market

    • @NarheimArmoury
      @NarheimArmoury 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think the main reason is the same reason you don't find boppers made and sold in Europe: there isn't a flintknapping market. Quality flint can be found in a large expanse from France to the Baltic sea, and there's plenty of quarries extracting it and treating it as waste.

    • @captainflint89
      @captainflint89 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@NarheimArmoury there is a growing uk and european market but nowhere near the USA market value . if these quarry owners got wise they could make a nice sideline in flint exporting it and serving the small but growing amount of knappers in the region . most prolific UK knappers live and operate near easily gathered surface flint (that they are loath to part with for any price) as the majority of eastern and southern england is covered in it . its us northern scottish knappers who have to beg , borrow and trade with english knappers for stone , or travel . sadly the shipping costs make buying exotic rock very expensive .

    Beautiful Stuff. Never had any of it. I prolly couldnt do it justice. Oh and i heard you say in one video that you like Heavy Metal music. What bands and era of metal do you favor the most? Ive played guitar since I was 12. I started playing in church then moved onto other genre's. I thoroughly enjoy playing Metal and Bluegrass. The two couldnt be farther apart from eachother. Sold my electric guitar and Amp Stack cause mom is sick and i play loud so ill get another setup one day later. But she enjoys listening to me play Bluegrass, Country and Gospel music. I wish I could Knapp as good as you and Play guitar like Tony Rice 😂 id be a master at both then.

      @KnapperJackCrafty  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      As for the Heavy Metal stuff, Black Sabbath is one of my favorites, so I'll listen to anything that sounds like that. But I listen to AC/DC, ZZTop, Motley Crew, Heart, Led Zeplin, Pink Floyd, and all the way up to more recent bands like Tool, Deftones, Royal Blood, Korn, etc. If I'm listening to music when other people are around, I'll switch to "southern fried rock" like Lynyrd Skynyrd, CCR, and such.

I got 100lbs for 340$ and 300 shipping. that is like 7 bucks a pound round about. i wish i could get it cheaper. The longest blade i ever made was with this stuff.
