I have a theory. When Kanami writes songs like this, writing the lead, rhythm, and vocals, she is placing her faith in Misa, Akane, Miku, and Saiki. Kanami knows the emotional affect she is creating and she knows her band mates will fulfill her vision for the song. She imagines how each will fulfill their part. She knows Miku will write heartfelt, meaningful lyrics and that Saiki will amplify Miku's words beyond the meaning of mere words. When Saiki is singing Miku's words everyone understands what she is feeling even though you may not know the language. Kanami knows how to infuse emotion into each part, as though Saiki is the solo, and Miku's lyrics are..... I've no words for this. See Misa swaying to the song? Misa is feeling it. Akane is incredible. After seeing her cry while completing "Endless Story" in Chicago, she must be one of the all time greatest percussionists: she never missed a beat while wiping the tears from her eyes. This is inspiring!
No one does this better than Band-Maid. Pink Floyd came close a few times, Bowie too, but songs like "About Us" and "Page" are monumental.

This band's versatility makes them pretty unique: so cool to release a song like this on the same album as Rinne or The Dragon Cries. Kanami wrote Page to be played at weddings - it's got a passionate and steady feel, and seems tailored to spotlight Saiki's vocals. Miku didn't know that Kanami's inspiration was a wedding song, so there's a bit of a disconnect with the lyrics lol. (Also, not fond of this live mix; the studio version sounds richer imo.)

Then on the album this on, "Conqueror", it immediately picks up several notches into "Glory", which is a straight up banger. IIRC, it was used as an ED (ending song) for a recent Yu-Gi-Oh show. Then you have their song "Different", which was used as the opening for Log Horizon season 3.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's funny, after going back to the album again it's PAGE and especially At The Drop Of A Hat that I really don't enjoy. Some parts of At The Drop Of A Hat don't even feel like a rock band played them, but like Kanami created half the song on a computer without any real instruments except for Saiki's voice and maybe the guitars as they sound somewhat left alone. Even the drums sound programmed instead of Akane playing them. It might be because of them using triggers and a somewhat artifical sounding sample though.
I can hear it's a real bass because of MISA's playing style, but the sound of the bass also sounds like it could have been played on a keyboard on that one. Most of the instruments sound extremely artificial on At The Drop Of A Hat (overproduced imo). I really woudn't be surprised if most of that song was created on a computer the more that I think about it, which isn't necessarily a problem for me but I do notice it a lot. I actually think it's more overproduced than The Dragon Cries is.
I am sure they were going for that specific sound (I don't have problem with them making that choice) and I completely understand why people would like or love those songs, but I have a hard time enjoying the song just because of the way the instruments sound as it bothers me to no end.
endless Story (and even PAGE apart from the beginning) don't have this as much as the guitars and most instruments still more-or-less sound like real instruments, but they are just not for me (which is fine). Relistening to the album might have put At The Drop Of A Hat as my least favourite instead of PAGE though.
There are some others on Conqueror, that are not for me, but after going back (and my semi-rant before in an other comment), I did notice some songs that I do appreciate next to the couple I said before (Rinne, Blooming, glory, Bubble) as I did somewhat enjoy liberal and wonderland, which is another one of their slower ones that I do appreciate (I enjoy Saiki's vocals in that one). I honestly think I appreciate Conqueror more than I did before going back.
Also, nothing against you (or anyone else) loving those songs. I would have not problem with Wave Potter doing a reaction to At The Drop Of A Hat and I will most likely watch the reaction as I am curious to what he things about it so you get a thumbs up from me. I am not a musician, so I might mishear some things.
It's all taste and the fact that you love both of those songs, makes it more logical to me that I don't like either since I knew I didn't really enjoy PAGE and they share some similatiries.
All in all, It's great that Band-Maid can create so many different types of songs that can divide their fans as far as all have their favourites and then ones they like less, but in the end they all consider themselves fans of the band.

But then I thought, 'SYBG' is actually a banger for Top 40, and of course the Maids can do it even better," just like how if mainstream arena rock had been as consistently good/intetesting back in the 80s I wouldn't have set out for AlternativeLand.
EDIT: You'd probably find their _song_ "Start Over" really interesting even though 50% of the video is cringey. I'd actually suggest Something No Reactor Has Done Yet and just react to the audio and maybe a second pass with the MV.

This is by far one of my least favourite of their songs. It made me almost turn off the Conqueror album after the first couple of seconds. I think the Live version is a bit more manageable because it doesn't sound as processed as the album does, but it still isn't for me. Conqueror was the first of the Band-Maid albums I have played after buying Conqueror and Unseen World (I was only listening to them for a month or so) and it's probably my least favourite album of them, I think because of the first impressions I got from this song (because there are some good tracks on there as well) and because most of the songs sound way too polished/processed/compressed for my tastes. My brain tells me it also has quite a bit of ballads, but I might have just misremembered since I have only really listened to the full album once.
I am not saying it's a bad song, but I don't tend to enjoy a lot of ballads in general and I don't tend to enjoy these types of processed/poppy vocals. It reminds me of radio songs, but it has been over 20 years since I really listened to the radio, so I might be wrong.
But obviously nothing against people loving this song, I understand why. It's still Band-Maid, it is obviously well written and they are still great musicians. It just is like a worst-case scenario for me (especially the beginning which still really bothers me)
I think about Us (and the Puzzle Acoustic version, which is S-tier) are the only ballad-like songs of them that I really like, so that's for sure a me-thing and not a Band-Maid thing.
I did enjoy the reaction though. I honestly wrote the song and this album off (with the exception of Rinne, Blooming, glory and Bubble), but I want to give it a chance again and this reaction made me at least try to listen to Page again. Even though it still really wasn't my thing, who knows if I get used to it in the future.
    Edit:
After reading more of the comments, I can see that I am one of the few people who doesn't like this song all that much. I am not that surprised since I know the Conqueror album is well like by a lot of fans as is Daydreaming which is an other of their ballads that's not really for me (even though I like that one way more than Page).
Ah well, I knew for a while that I tend to have "weird" musical tastes compared to a lot of other people. The fact that, even though I listen to a lot of different genres, metal (and a lot of black metal and other harsher styles) is the music I listen to most might be a reason why I don't like a lot of ballads I guess.
The great thing about this is that it's clear that almost all of their songs have their fans, which shows how well rounded they are.

Yep, most fans seem to have very differing biases towards the different albums, and _Conqueror_ as a whole was not what a lot of them wanted (even though they'd declare "Rinne" to be their all-time favorite Band-Maid song). This is partially by design though; the band has said they tend to go, "Whoa, we went really far in _this_ direction on that last album, so let's balance things out by leaning in another direction on the next one." Some people were saying some pretty silly stuff like, "Oh, after _Conqueror_ I've lost interest" - but it was a good bet that _Unseen World_ wasn't going to be anything like _Conqueror_, as in fact turned out to be the case.

@@stevehall5128 I have only started to listen to them since april or may or so after I finally gave a Band-Maid reaction a chance. It's still a weird band for me even though I like them a lot in general.
I have bought all their albums and singles (except for the first one) on CD and their blurays since then, but there aren't a lot of songs of them that I love from beginning to end for some reason. I think it's because I am not always the biggest fan of their more poppy chorusses. I am drawn to their musicianship though and Kanami is great songwriter (and honestly some of the early songs are good too).
That being said I am getting more used to it. I really like Unseen World a lot and I tend to enjoy the live versions of their songs more than the album versions because of the mixing (although they tend to put Kanami a bit low in the mix). I have always liked rawer sounding music over polished music (except for electronic music obviously).
I personally love that they seem to make the music they want to make. I don't think any band should adapt their sound to their fans except if they really want to make that type of music as well.
So I would consider myself a fan, but not a superfan like a lot on here are. I keep checking reactions to them though and listen to them quite a bit.
I just know that I probably won't enjoy a couple of their songs as much each album and that's ok. The parts or songs that I do like are worth it to me.

'Conqueror' features some of the best songs Band Maid have ever written : Blooming, Rinne, Glory and Wonderland, even Bubble is great.
The rest, unfortunately, is rather forgettable, which is surprising as the rest of their work is anything but that.
Even their debut album, although poppier, features fun hooks and memorable riffs that make it a joy to listen to.
It's no surprise that I've rarely replayed 'Conqueror' in its entirety. I did recently, just to see if I was too quick to judge during my initial reaction, but the result was the same.
Naturally, this is all my opinion, but I am glad I'm not alone in feeling they can do better. Which, BTW, they definitely proved with 'Unseen World', one of the best albums I've heard in years.

Many of the fans who adore Conqueror also deny Unseen World (and mistakenly include the song Different in that drift). Curiously, both albums are divisive because they are a very personal decision in what the band decides to write. What is important here is that Band Maid is not a band that plays metal, or hard rock, or pop punk. They are that and much more. If one approaches their songs expecting that they stick to a genre, he is wrong and therefore it is easier for him to feel disappointed. The four LPs that they have written and produced themselves in four years (this is important, four radically different LPs in four years ... creativity wise THAT is out of reach right now) span all possible genres of music rock. I doubt very much that one can anticipate anything from any Band Maid premiere, only be amazed at what they have written after surprising you (for better or for worse). Of course I hope their next album is also divisive, that will mean that it has been surprising. As in a matter of taste there is nothing written, it is perfectly normal that some songs are more your cup of tea than others.
Sorry for this wall of words, I just wanted to share my thoughts on Conqueror and Unseen World (that are the same like Just Bring It and World Domination). Two authentic masterpieces each in its own way. Greetings!
