    Ooooh rankings! Here's mine:
    1. Simon says
    2. Lip service
    3. Last Night of the Proms

    6. Wuthering Heights

    Lip Service, for me, was easily the best. Brilliantly written, brilliantly acted, brilliantly produced. A genuinely shocking twist in which the Easter eggs were laid out for all to (not) see.

    Honestly this series of No. 9 well always be special to me, it was the first one I got to watch weekly as it aired and it sort of softened the blow to what was a pretty stressful and occasionally rough time for me, not my favourite season but definitely the most special.

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's exactly how I felt about series five (yes, I was late to the party), which was my first series watched live and also came around at a difficult time. Talking about each episode with other people every week who loved the show as much as I did helped keep me going when things were rough IRL. I'll always be grateful for that. Speaking of gratitude, thanks for your video on The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse - I rewatched the movie last year, and while it's still a very weird film, I think it deserves better. Always nice to hear a measured take, so thanks for that.

    in discussions with friends and family who are also 9 fans, we all have widely varying from this season, which i think shows the strength of the series as it is capable of great variety and not afraid to try different things

    I want to thank WeeLin for honouring How Do You Plead as your favourite episode so glad to be apart of this video and show...Overall I think the credit goes to both Steve and Reece there brilliant rapport allows such horrific and creative ideologies to bleed through the series...I have to also thank you for the award to most disturbing moment credits to Gulliem Morales his direction and visceral attention to detail is just masterly done in this series, this also coincided with the eerie atmosphere that Laurence Thripp and his team did during post production...To my co stars Reece Shearsmith, Derek Jacobi, Steve Pemberton and Aaron Niel all brought incredible performances it was amazing to see Derek's astute skills in play on set such a wonderful actor, Reece is so welcoming always working hard and inspiring as an actor. 🍊S (Carl Jackson)

    My ranking is as follows (watched all 6 today for the first time)
    1. Lip Service (best twist and fantastic performances)
    2. Simon Says (great meta in this and another fantastic twist)
    3. Wuthering Heist (the fourth wall breaks I always enjoy and liked that the good guy wins)
    4. Hurry Up And Wait (creepy finish, not bad episode)
    5. How Do You Plead? (unremarkable twist, too dull)
    6. Last Night Of The Proms (just poor, possibly my least favourite episode ever)

    I'm really excited to see your takes on series 7 after I watch it myself. Its so fascinating to see how the anthology evolves yet still maintains tone and cohesion that can be traced back to series 1. Even though Steve and Reece always pretty much play to their natural archetypes, the innovation they bring to the table is so fresh these days. They're not afraid to mix bleak and campy, and every episode seals in this uneasy feeling with being cozy/claustrophobic, a perfect example being Stakeout. Most shows often forget the nuance, so its good to see the Number 9 guys will always work their magic. Anyways, happy viewing on the 20th!

    As a drama student I have major bias this season.
    6. Hurry up and Wait
    5. Last Night of the Proms
    4. Simon Says
    3. Lip Service
    2. How do you Plead (this and Lip Service are so interchangeable. They are both so brilliant)
    1. Wuthering Heist
    I love genre-subversion and the two number-9 lads blew it out of the water with their season pilot. I can't tell you how much I adore the 4th wall breaking and general idiocy on screen. Organised chaos is something very difficult to do well and they knocked it out of the park with it's absurdity and comedy.

    Inside No 9 is definitely my favourite anthology series but another really good dark comedy anthology series is ‘Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories’. If you like the weirdness of TLoG and really twisted stories then Bedtime Stories is a great little series. There are only 15 episodes and most of them are only 10 minutes but it’s a good mix of horror and comedy. Amazing video too, just like usual!

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for letting me know this exists! I was a fan of Tim and Eric's Awesome Show and I love their general weirdness (along with most things in the horror/comedy genre), so that's something I'm going to have to look at. Thanks again!

    • @hadronscollider4492
      @hadronscollider4492 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WeeLin I hope you enjoy it, it’s definitely more ‘Tim & Eric’ style weird, and some of the episodes aren’t as strong, but to fit a full story into 10 minutes and for it to work well makes the show really good. It’s also quite fun seeing them play quite dark characters after all their weirdness in Awesome Show.

    I absolutely loved Lip Service as it provided so many unpredictable twists and turns, I would class it as my favourite of the series. Coming in at a close second is How Do you Plead due to it’s subtle but very well done elements of horror which I loved. I wasn’t that fond of Last Night of the Proms but it had some funny parts to be fair. Overall I think series 6 was so strong and I can’t wait to see what series 7 has in store for us! And this video came out just in time of me completing a collage of my favourite episodes on my wall, it has really brightened up the place! 😂 I have been watching a lot of telly recently and have fallen in love with ‘Spaced’ which has cameos from both Reece and Mark Gatiss, I binged it all in one sitting and love Edgar Wrights directive take 👍🏻

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some great insights into series 6 there, thanks for sharing! I also love Spaced. I found it especially comforting to watch at times where I've been out of work and ended up relying on freelance writing (or, in my own words, "going full Daisy") and to this day, I still channel that moment where Reece's character angrily goes "Oh, ah hadn't though of that!" every time I hear someone stating the obvious! I'm a big Edgar Wright fan too, and I love that you can see his style is already so strong with this early work. That No 9 collage sounds awesome - let us know if you ever put a picture of it on Twitter or anything. Always like seeing fellow No 9 fans getting creative!

      @@WeeLin I've never heard of "Ready or Not", but so far, your recommendations have been spot-on. I watched (and very much liked) Psychoville, after seeing your videos about it. I still haven't warmed up to "League of Gentlemen", but to be honest, I'm basing my impression on having seen an episode years ago and I haven't quite decided whether to give it a proper watch or not. From my memory of the episode, it seemed like very unsophisticated, juvenile humour, which is in sharp contrast to both "Inside No. 9" and "Psychoville". I don't mean to be insulting a show that I know you love, but that was my impression at the time.

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cScottD That's okay - the League is a much older show and some of the humour is very much of its time. It was the weirdness of the characters, their arcs and the combination of comedy and horror that made it so unique, and it does build on itself quite a bit over time if you warm up to it. But I've always known it isn't to everyone's taste - nothing is, really. No need to feel bad if it didn't vibe with you.

    Given what little I know about the difficulties of filming this series (due to COVID), and especially the fact that there was apparently a 1-year 'gap' while they were doing "Last Night at the Proms", I can't help but wonder if that's why that particular episode was so uneven. It honestly felt sort of unfinished to me, as if the ending was kind of tacked on. I don't know, but it's definitely at the bottom of my list for this series, and honestly, I think it's the bottom for the show in general, so far. I cannot think of an episode I liked less or even one that I disliked at all, but I disliked "Last Night at the Proms". It had a couple of promising ideas, but nothing really paid off and then that 'twist' (I guess?) was just underwhelming. To me anyway.

    I'm gonna sound pretty pedantic here, I don't mean anything by it, but technically Mephistopheles is a demon rather than the devil himself, most closely associated with the story of Faust. It's interesting because there are a lot of demons from folklore that are frequently associated with the devil but are actually demons, including Beelzebub, Baphomet, Asmodeus, Pazuzu (only really because of the Exorcist) sometimes even Lucifer is categorised as being separate from the Devil although I think generally speaking most scholars identify Lucifer and Satan as being the same thing.

    Since I’m guessing that it’s less time consuming to make the unscripted monologue based reviews that you’ve done for the last 2 seasons of Inside No. 9, have you thought about reviewing seasons 1 to 4 in the same way?
    I watch a lot of Doctor Who reviews by the whotuber Council Of Geeks, who you may have already heard of (they made reviews of the first 6 episodes of No. 9, before evidently losing interest in the show), and they did something very similar, initially reviewing new DW episodes from Season 8 onwards as they came out and then rewatching all the episodes from seasons 1-7 and talking about them one by one.
    Equally though, you did an excellent job of analysing The 12 Days Of Christine and Tom And Gerri, so if you’re more interested in making long form videos, I’d love to see some more in that vein.

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm actually subscribed to Council of Geeks myself - they've done some great videos (although I'm miles behind on Doctor Who), and yes I did see their IN9 series 1 reviews. They actually had some interesting insights that never crossed my mind.
      The completionist part of my brain definitely wants to have a review for every episode of IN9 on my channel, all neatly divided into series playlists with a summary/awards for each one. I'm not sure if that's something other people would want, seeing as some of the reviews might be rehashing things I've already said in a deep dive analysis video, plus I'd be talking about old episodes I've watched over and over rather than giving my first impressions. I will keep it in mind though, and try to find a way to do it that isn't just content for content's sake. A few more episodes will be getting the deep dive treatment as well, whenever I get around to it.

    Have you noticed that, when Mr Muller was looking at the shampoo bottle, the toilet is missing? Seriously. With only a funny screw in the wall in its place. Compare with Felix's first visit to the bathroom to make it clear. Very odd, but my guess is they had to remove the toilet to get certain shots and... forgot to replace it.
    PS. I don't think the skeleton hand was too fake-looking. The whole situation throws up a lot of questions that fester in your mind but I don't see that as a negative really. When the episode was nearing its end and Oona said, "There's no ending, nobody knows what happened to Baby Ryan" I thought they were going to leave it there, which would have been bold and anti-climatic... and possibly work in a real life versus TV fantasy sort of way. Another good video. I appreciate everyone likes different things but personally Fleabag didn't really appeal to me. I watched one episode and didn't really 'get' it but then some of the more popular shows just don't seem to appeal to me. I saw the new series of the Twilight Zone on Sky One a while back but it's not as good as Inside No9. I can't think of other similar shows I've seen recently, although I did notice the whole of 'Eerie Indiana' is available on DVD. I used to love that show as a kid of the 90s lol. I think, rankings wise, Lip Service is my favourite, followed by Simon Says. I need to re-watch Last Night of the Proms. I thought it was quite moving, the scene with the lady who 'found Jesus' comforting him. I used to be obsessed with angels when I was a teen though and relatives were involved with the church, so religion is somewhat meaningful to me.

      Oh and btw, I forgot to add, I thought (/hoped) you'd give the award for best Reece character to Mueller, partly for the faux German (made a change from it being Steve doing German) but moreso for the fact his character adds such comedy to an otherwise sad (and shocking) episode.

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a very good point - Mr Mueller gave us some much-needed levity, plus he also acted as a sort-of antagonist to the main characters (as he was really looking for a bust and would have chucked Iris out at the drop of a hat).
      Maybe I should give Last Night of the Proms another shot - I'm not anti-religious people, and I hope that's not how I come across, but I've probably read one too many Christ allegories to find those very interesting. I was raised Catholic and most of my family are still practising - I've no bitterness, as that way of life just wasn't for me, but I still have respect for them and their beliefs. I can also imagine them laughing if they saw these reviews and saying, "Of course, you would prefer the devil episode!"

    • @islascott5578
      @islascott5578 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WeeLin The thought of Mueller's reaction to Iris makes me laugh!. No, I don't think you come across as completely anti-religion. I'm not really religious as such but I've always been interested in other peoples faiths and curious about what may exist 'out there' etc. which I think is fascinating. I think if they had directly linked 'How Do You Plead?' to 'The Devil of Christmas' episode then (some?) people would criticise that for being too obvious and perhaps accused them of not having anything original to offer. Each 9 is distinct in its own way, perhaps slightly less so with 'Death Be Not Proud' but otherwise they are and I don't think they'd want to stray from that, without there being a really good reason. On the other hand, as said in 'Wuthering Heist', their on series 6, so you could also argue they should be allowed some slack... this series has taught me some new terms too, like 'meta' and 'fourth wall', so their informative as well as entertaining!.

    Question for Brit Fans: Why do you call each individual year of a series "series" rather than SEASON of A series? As a Canadian accustomed to the more common 'Season of a Series.' I find this odd.

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might be able to help with that actually - this is a slight difference in the official naming conventions that comes from the broadcast industry itself. In the UK, the hierarchy goes Programme/Series/Episode/Production, while in the US and other regions (including Canada) it goes Series/Season/Episode/Production. So, slightly different (and more than a little confusing, especially if you've ever worked for a TV network station in the UK that also had the rights to international imports!)
      Here's another thing that might be interesting - a UK season/series is normally quite short, with six half hour episodes being standard for many productions. The US/Canadian standard (from what I've seen) is more like 24 episodes, which would equate to roughly a "season" of the year if broadcast weekly. Maybe British shows aren't quite long enough to be considered full seasons, who knows?

    • @rixx46
      @rixx46 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WeeLin interesting - thanks! I have been writing for TV since the 80s. Doing 24 episodes is always a slog! Shorter runs are soon going o be universal given the standard 8-10 episodes for streaming networks. The extended seasons in the US are a throwback to the syndication market, which Is where the shows really turn a profit. That generally required at least 100 episodes. That’s why these US comedy hits like Friend and Seinfeld or a license to print money. I wonder what’s to become of the syndication market as streaming evolves.

That was some seriously messed up shit - the first one I watched was the one where he ends up on crack, which is probably still my favourite. Series 3 was all kinds of grim too, maybe overly so, but still had some great moments. Yeah, I loved that show - not seen it in years though.

    How do you plead was definitely the best episode out of this series, just above lip service and hurry up and wait

    I’m not sure if you’ve ever explained this in another video but what is this talk of a “hare” in episodes? I’ve heard you mentioning it in a few of your videos but I’m not sure what it’s referring to? Love your videos btw ❤️

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The hare statue is a sort of No 9 Easter Egg - it's hidden somewhere in every single episode. Sometimes it's very tricky to spot, like how it briefly appears printed on a shampoo bottle in episode 3! It also features as a plot point in the series 4 episode "Tempting Fate".

      To be fair, they were working under some difficult circumstances, and from what I gather it wasn't the series they initially had in mind. I still loved it, but I think series 3 still holds the crown as far as I'm concerned.

      If one stands out in a series, that could equally mean that the series had one great episode and five terrible ones. When none stand out, it could be because they were all great. I'm not necessarily disagreeing that series six is the poorest but I think that the logic you've used to come to that conclusion is flawed.
