Quick modelling tips #2 Panel line wash

A short guide on how i detail recessed panel lines on my models using Vallejo game colour wash. There are many other methods such as oil and enamel washes and even using pencils, but I wanted to discuss this method as I have recently been trailing this product to find its best use.

If you use strictly Vallejo products it’s possible to weather without a gloss varnish.

Should I not use a matte varnish at first to cover the decals and stuff?

No. Gloss until right at the end, when you cover the model with whatever finish you want. Matt/gloss again/satin.

Have you used the Tamiya Panel line accent? Or is that for a different effect?

im am prepping for my first plane model, ive seen people talking about varnish, after i finish the paint should i do this, or use some sorta varnish first then do this?

what should i apply on the aircraft before using the wash? A vanish ?

Hi mate, yeah you should apply a gloss varnish before applying decals and doing the panel washing, this helps protect the paint underneath. You should still work the wash off gently to prevent it from coming off still, and also allow your varnish to set and cure before working on it (as a rule of thumb I’ll leave it 24hrs before applying decals to on the model after varnish application)

If you use enamel paint on your model is it possible to use acrylic paint to weather your model. Because the water won’t wipe away the enamel paint.

Sure, enamel paints are very hard wearing and when they have cured water based paints like acrylics shouldn’t cause them to lift or disintegrate. To be sure you can always give the model a gloss varnish coat, which will also make it easier to apply and wipe away excess washes too, and will also give a smooth surface to apply decals to, preventing the transfer film from silvering. Question: I've used Tamiya panel line wash on a varnished model and nothing will remove the wash except a paint remover which as you guested it removes the paint if I am not careful. However, nothing else will remove the wash from the model. I have watched many people do what you did but in my experience your technique doesn't work. Could you inform me of what I may be doing wrong and what I should be doing? What kind of wash?

When I applied the gloss varnish, can I use matt varnish to remove the shiny effect?

Yes you certainly can.

Hi, yes I think it may do the trick, anything that reactivates the wash. Just remember to allow any protective varnish over your paint to cure before hand 👍👍

Why are people spending so much for brand name wash's when you can buy small tubes of artist oil paints for much much less.

BennyCFD bit of a late reply but the Vallejo wash is about £2-3 and it’s done a lot of models. Use it sparingly instead of covering the whole model like some people do with other brands and it’ll last

I served 4 years overseas, I can attest the panels on planes get very dirty and lots of streaking.

bwahahahaha well if you say it looks ridiculous it must right, How about if the guy that built it likes it, then it looks good, I'm sure everything you built looks great to everyone else right, I understand it but it's got varying opinions but you can still don't have to degrade someone while giving your opinion because it may be that it's your opinion that no one likes
