- In this episode, Willie takes a long drive out to Staunton, Virginia to hit a couple antique stores he's never been to, and one that he had. Watch him strip and clean a Garcia Mitchell 304, and shape a vintage Stetson hat.

@@chadlake3590 Hey there🤠,
Thanks soooo much and You are very welcome!!
I very much appreciate you watching and am extremely happy you’re enjoying it!!
Fonz is the Man. Awesome hat too... hahaha thinking about that Jeep..my diff went out in my hunting truck! 🤣 what can u do but lol ... LiveAction. Awesome show
@@TheCATFISH1949 eeyyyyyy!!!👍
I wish I would’ve been just the Diff on that jeep that would’ve broke.. I’d already be driving it..
we still haven’t decided what we’re going to do with it..
Do I put $2300 in it and then the engine explode? Or do I just I just put that money towards another vehicle that’s known to be a little more dependable…
Still trying to figure it all out..
I’m looking forward to wearing that hat!🤠
Thanks for watching!
Willie
You are man of many talents. The reel cleaned up fine, thanks for sharing the process. The hat looks great. My grandfather used to wear a Stetson that looked similar or may have been the same model.
@@davidknutson8126 Thanks so much!! I’ve got three Mitchell 304 reels now. I have a soft spot for the 308 and 304.. I just couldn’t leave it behind.
The Stetson Open Road was an extremely popular hat model for a very long time. The older generations Loved that hat style. And now I do..
I can certainly relate to the feeling you get when you see the east coast mtns. I see them pretty much every day but I never get tired of them. No place like home. Mighty spiffy hat you got!
@@oldmanoldtruck I’ll bet you can relate..
I spent my youth walking those mountains, rivers, and small towns..
Fishing, drinking Cokes, and driving all over the place..
I miss it and more of it needs to be done.. very soon. 😉
I enjoyed the trip, Willie, the Mitchell 304 turned out to be a nice find, but I think the hat is the cat's meow! Take care and be safe!
Hey CJ!
Thanks for coming along!!
The 304 did turn out nice.. I’ve got 3 now. I went from never seeing one to finding a 304 everywhere I go.. they’re actually fairly good reels and extremely easy to work on.
But that hat?! I was very happy to have found it..
I still enjoy going back to Nashua, Iowa, where I spent most of my grade school years. Living in a town with a river flowing through it laid the foundation for my lifelong love for fishing. Whenever I go there all those memories come to life again. The town has changed a lot since I lived there. All three hardware stores are gone. I spent a lot of hours looking at fishing reels that I could not afford vowing that someday I would own some of them. I guess that’s why I like collecting them so much these days.
@@ddselvig I was born and raised here in Newport News but my mom’s side of the family came from the mountains of Va. The town of Covington to be exact..
I spent more summers there than I can possibly remember.. The State Park was my play ground..
Walking through the little town, buying a Coke and a MoonPie. Going in Western Auto, staring at the Go Carts and Mini Bikes. That’s where I learned to hop the slow train to the paper mill, jump off at the river and fish for a few hours until it left, then hop back on and ride back home.
There’s so much of that was more “Me” than this place I grew up in could ever be..
Doesn’t seem right that I stayed here..
Good mornin’ Willie!
I’m right there with ya with the feelings about the mountains. I live where I can see the southern/eastern side of the Blue Ridge mountains along the NC/SC border and some mornings I just sip my coffee on the deck and watch the clouds rise and clear of those grand old rocky ledges. My wife’s college roommate is from WV and we drive up every year along I-77 pretty much the entire way. Once past the Charlotte and Lake Norman craziness the drive from Mt Airy NC through Bland County VA, Fancy Gap and on through Wytheville then heading into WV at Bluefield, through Buckley, Charleston and finishing up in Moundsville. That drive is an absolute joy.
That Stetson Open Road turned out to be a beauty. Great find and rescue there for sure!
Thanks for taking us on the journey. I enjoyed the ride!

@@ABurdenOutdoors G’mornin Allan🤠..
Man, sounds like heaven where you are..
I long for that type of life.
Just getting out and spending the day doing what I enjoy, with no time limit or schedule to keep was an incredible experience..
Sadly, these days I struggle even when I’m on vacation. It’s hard to enjoy it when two days into a weeks vacation you’re already dreading going back to work..
But I’ll be making more of those trips this winter as well as some longer journeys all next year..
The Open Road hat turned out pretty good.. need to make a few small adjustments but all in due time..
Thanks again for watching and commenting!!
Talk to you later!!
Willie
Great video, but man, you put some miles on your truck with this one! I liked the $5 & $9 reels and the service job that you showed on the M-304, but for me the best part was the restoration on the hat. Anymore, I have grown to like the smaller brim hats (as you can probably tell from my profile photo). You did a great job cleaning and re-shaping it and I'm sure the previous owner is smiling about that from wherever he might be watching! Miss Sophia said to tell you "Hello" and "Keep the videos coming out for us to enjoy!"
@@harryhoward3064 Howdy Howards🤠,
Yes indeed, I put some miles on the truck for sure.. The big fella ran like champ.
I’m happy to have it even if it does drink up the gas..
That 304 turned out really nice. Now I’ve got three of those dang things.. I went from never seeing one to finding one almost every time I go out..
It’s hard to leave one behind because they work so well..
I thought you might like the hat..
I see them quite often bought me having a 6 7/8 head (tiny) it’s not a size I see much of.
The Open Road definitely turned out pretty nice.. I’m looking forward to wearing it..
Might be this weekend😉🤠.
Thanks for watching and tell Miss Sophia Howdy!!
Willie
I really enjoyed the hat cleaning and shaping segment. You really improved the shape and overall appearance of the hat! There is a Richard Miller water treatment plant in Cincinnati, but there are probably a thousand Richard Miller's in the world. 🤠
@@donaldstopp5781 Howdy Donald🤠,
I’m glad you enjoyed the hat shaping segment.
A lot of different things get “rejuvenated” around here.. except for me, I just keep getting older and worse off, no one tries to rebuild me😂…
I believe, back in the day, Stetson would put your name on the hat band for an extra fee if you ordered it. Don’t hold me to that but I’ve seen many hats in my time with the original owners name stamped in the headband.. And yes, I’m sure there’s quite a few Richard Millers out there but there’s only one “Willie Gray” taking care of “Richard Millers” hat, that I’d almost be positive.. 😂
Thanks for watching Donald!!
Soon as the warm temperatures make it back around, they’ll be a lot more Monkey videos, I promise!! I’ll even dedicate one to you!! 🙈
Willie
@@TheGraytOutdoors a video dedicated to me, that would make my day!!! 🤠
Have a Merry Christmas and keep the great videos coming 🎅
@ Merry Christmas 🎄 to you as well my friend 🎅
@ I look for cool hats whenever I stop in a secondhand store. My best find ever is a wool made in USA black Stetson Crushabe Jeremiah hat from Goodwill. The previous owner added some tiny very high quality snaps to the sides that allow you to snap up the sides of the brim if you want. The interior folds out to cover your ears in the winter. I think I only paid $4 for it but that was 10 years or more ago. I couldn't help thinking that the previous owner probably wasn't with us anymore because he never would've given this up this great hat. I still wear it on special occasions 🤠
Morning willy I remember a store called t.s.s when I was young and getting ice cream at Carvel I also remember the in town delie that had cheap prices run by a family that everyone knew and loved there costumers and knew us by name as we did them fishing with my uncle on his boat better times frome your friend paul in p.a
@@paulbohn1971 G’mornin Paul!
The old days and old memories cross my mind on a daily basis. I guess that’s just what we do as we age😄..
Hi Willie, what a great video. That reel turned out to be a beauty.
Your hat is really spiffy. How long did it take from start to finishing the hat?
I'm trying to get caught caught up on my channels. I've been sick for over a month now. I think I'm getting better now.
Tell all Hi and meow meow. Take care and stay safe till next time.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Howdy Skye🤠,
Yes in deed, another Mitchell 304 ready for duty!!
They hat took about 20 minutes to get it like I wanted.. usually I’ll let it sit for a couple days to see if it tries to go back to its old shape, then I’ll shape it again but this one’s looking pretty good..
Sorry you’re still not feeling well.. any idea what’s going on??
Anyway, I hope you feel better soon..
Everyone says Hi Skye and double meow!! 🐈⬛🐈
I guess it's a little too cold for the bike huh? Looks like a fun road trip!
@@pnwvintageoutdoors Haha! 🤣
Man!! I was just thinking about you.. How have you been??
🏍️ Yes, been 20+ degree mornings around here.. I hate trying to ride so bundled up that you can’t hardly turn your head or put your arms by your sides.. 😂..
I’m glad to hear from you, I think about you every-time I put that knife in my pocket.. 🤠
Please stay in touch. Hope everyone is well!!

@TheGraytOutdoors I have been unbelievably busy! I lost my ability to log into my channel for 2 months because of a major phone crash. We finally got moved up into the mountains, haven't been able to do as much fishing as I was because of work. I'm just trying to reconnect with everybody after getting moved and trying to settle in! We've been having mornings that are down to 2 to 3° on a daily basis, I'm waiting for the lakes to freeze up to go do some ice fishing!
@ Man, just awesome to hear from you..
Glad it’s all coming together..

Thanks so much for subscribing!!
Is your collection at home or is it in a shop/store?
I try my best to not to “collect” reels or at least try not to call what I do “collecting”.. it’s getting much harder though.. 😂
I use what I buy and Even though I have a cabinet full, it’s just to have a nice place to keep them so they don’t get all beat up in a drawer..
Again, I thank you so much for stopping in and subscribing!!
Looking forward to hearing more from ya!!
Happy Holidays to you and the wife!! Stay warm!!
