Irfan, I have been wondering about that for a long time. Since the 1950s, pen holders dominated table tennis until the 2000s but only Korea, China, and Japan produce pen hold players. Why players from other countries never picked that up is beyond simple logic?
I think its because of the trade off. Something similar in Tennis, Single Handed Backhand vs Double Handed Backhand. SHB were common during the early years of tennis right up to the mid 80s. But as the game started changing(just like in TT), there was a shift to DHB. It's easier to master, more solid and takes LESS time to be good at. It's a surer investment. The weakness of traditional penhold lies in the backhand. Lack of reach and ability to generate top spin. RPB changes that factor. If anything it actually gives an advantage to Penhold over Shakehand. But RPB is harder to master than a Shakehand BH. RPB allows for more variation etc. If you could create the perfect penholder vs the perfect shakehander. The penholder has a slight advantage. He has all ranges covered and unlike a SH player, he doesn't have a crossover point. Take Ma Lin and Xu Xin. In their primes, they were better than ANYONE by some distance. Bt the best penholders shine twice as bright as anyone, bt only last HALF as long. The most logically sound answer to your question simply is, SH is easier to master, it's as simple as that. A modern day penholder takes longer to train and if done well, is even better than the best shakehander, bt it takes a bit too long in a scenario where the establishments demand quick success.
With that being said, i have faith. Lately Tennis has seen a resurgence of Single Backhanders and there's a very good chance, TT will follow suit with modern day penholders. People will realize it's part of what makes TT beautiful, the various styles.
I agree completely. I feel like the only penholders in America at the moment. I think one of the reasons is people see guys like ma long and Jan ove play and decide to go with shakehand. Also, there aren't many choices of all wood blades for Penhold these days. All have carbon inside of them.
I switched to penhold last month and I love it! The start was rough, but the progress gets exponential over time. I am happy that I switched to penhold and I recomend it to everyone.
you're brave! penhold system is the most beautiful and powerful table tennis. since 1952 when Hiroji Satoh won the world championships until 2013 when Ryu Seung Min and Ma Lin retired, penholders ruled table tennis (except briefly in 1989 - 1994)
Good compilation as always. I dare say his RPB is more powerful than Wang Hao's, not sure about the spin though. Again it will be uphill battle against ever overpowered Chinese shakehands. Hope Xue keeps playing this way.
I don't know but personally opinion,if someone has Wang li qin's forehand Wang hao's backhand and Ma lin's head he will be unbeatable.and hope he is a penholder player
I got a cheapish penhold blade for fun and now could give someone a game playing this styled grip. Love way one can keep a good bat angle on forehand and boy can get great power. Also like flexibility for serves. Back hand is tricky though, but I've managed some rpb shots as well. As a twiddler I shall stick to normal shakehand grip it's what I use to.
He is like Fan Zhendong or Jike with Penhold grip.. the way he generates power for his forehand with his right leg... his rpb could even surpass Wang Hao...
He already showing how good with RBP compare with wang hao, he got more speed compare to wang hao, and better forehand. Should I call this RBP v3? (v1 is liu guo Liang, v2 is wang hao, he is v3)
Syuukinn, Xue Fei is good and looks very menacing. Can he get to Wang Hao's level? We have to wait and see. Many young and promising prospects failed for various reasons. Being an athlete, it is a tough business. Table Tennis, Tennis, Badminton, or handballs are individual sports and only a handful of players can make it to the top. They require more than super skills and physical abilities. The final push will be a strong mental game. Ma Long is a very good example. Ma's overall skills were undeniably the best when he started competing at age 20. But it took many defeats for Ma to get to where he is now as a complete Table Tennis player. We also have to aware that many players failed and disappeared into oblivion.
I think there is something different. Wang Hao's style had always been under development during his career. Xue Fei's style is even more advancing. I cannot tell who plays better, but I'm sure that Xue Fei's arm movement is "harder" than Wang. This can lead to greater power and thus, faster speed, but may need more time to recover for the next shot. Surely it won't be a problem if he can "kill" his oppo in one shot, like Ma Lin's famous unblockable forehand.
cdalag, Xu Xin was trained as a traditional pen holder. He is really good with his push block. His coach or coaches wanted to convert him to a Wang Hoa style. In my opinion, that ruined his game. His backhand is not even as good as Ma Lin.
I don't think it ruined his game, i feel he didn't do enough with his RPB, he's inconsistent with it. There are times he's pulled of AMAZING shots with his RPB. But he just lacks consistency.
Again, very enjoyable compilation. Will female players start to appear here too as there are so many amazing ones? Thanks.
Yes, I will do female players tribute too, started with next video. Thank you for your comment and for watching!!!
Indeed he is the only hope for us to watch high level ph style in the future generations
Wong chun Ting too is a good hope , maybe not as this guy , but a good hope !
Shen l'incurvé yeah but I was talking about the teenagers
none of you saw felix, lol
More penholders need to be encouraged, especially in Europe.

Hey don't say that, I live in Donald Trump Land and I hold it J-Pen style with a J-Pen Paddle!
I agree completely. I feel like the only penholders in America at the moment. I think one of the reasons is people see guys like ma long and Jan ove play and decide to go with shakehand. Also, there aren't many choices of all wood blades for Penhold these days. All have carbon inside of them.

His rpb is so crisp and fluent. I wish I could do that.
Why so clean attacks! I love this guy! I love xu xin too because of his spinner attacks, but this one is so neat!! And simple footworks!
his rpb response time is faster than wang hao
Too bad, he never made it. I liked him. But now Xu Xin has retired and penholders are rare. There is Félix Lebrun though nowadays. Time will tell.
I think he has a great future ahead of him, possibly becoming even better than Xu Xin and Wong Chun Ting IMO
True. He's got an amazing control over rpb. Very consistent
wrong!!!!
Unfortunately, his forehand is extremely lacking
This comment did NOT age well... ⁉️❗
He has big hands, you can tell. So he has great grip and control over that paddle. That’s how he stays up with the best!
Good compilation as always. I dare say his RPB is more powerful than Wang Hao's, not sure about the spin though. Again it will be uphill battle against ever overpowered Chinese shakehands. Hope Xue keeps playing this way.
Sorry but the penholder at 4:40 is not Xue Fei. He is Fan Shengpeng, another penholder from China. Great video and thanks!
Sorry I meant 2:47.
Great video!
Lol Fan Shen Peng at 2:49... Not Xue Fei...
I look forward to xuefei become top penhold
I just searched "good tables with pen" and somehow this is one of the top results lol
めちゃくちゃフォーム綺麗やな。
I don't know but personally opinion,if someone has Wang li qin's forehand Wang hao's backhand and Ma lin's head he will be unbeatable.and hope he is a penholder player
Gang Lee together with Ma Longs consistency and Zhang Jikes mental toughness
And xu xin's footwork
王皓王徒弟
2:47 that's fan shengpang,not xue fei lol
Great backhand

Looks like a good doubles player
the RPB is strong with this one...
He is like Fan Zhendong or Jike with Penhold grip..
the way he generates power for his forehand with his right leg...
his rpb could even surpass Wang Hao...
2:47 that guy is fan shengpeng, not xuefei.
i'm laughing so much at the commentators in the first match
I prefer such excited commentators, lol
wonder when we are going to see the next wang hao
薛飞来自王皓王,加油!
Buen jugador
He is very promising. Perhaps CNT should focus on him and Xu Xin for penhold?
He's good...
He already showing how good with RBP compare with wang hao, he got more speed compare to wang hao, and better forehand.
Should I call this RBP v3? (v1 is liu guo Liang, v2 is wang hao, he is v3)
wang hao is that you?
Very consistent rph compare to XX

He lookes like a WANG hao style.

i still prefer wang hao... if you look at Xue Fei's matches, you will notice his backhand is not as adaptive as Wang Hao.
can someone explain what RPB means?
its the modern way of penholders to play with backhand...
RPB = Reverse penhold backhand
the other is called traditional penhold..
thanks a lot for your explanation :)
If you are interested..
for RPB check Wang Hao
for Traditional backhand check Ryu Seung Min
I've seen those videos before, it was just that abbreviation that was not familiar to me :)
PENHOLD NO CRUZAR EL DEDO INDICE . PRUEBALO...!!!!
バックのうまさはこれまでの中ペンのなかでは一番では?

王皓王
Form is way more efficient compared to XX!
cdalag,
Xu Xin was trained as a traditional pen holder. He is really good with his push block. His coach or coaches wanted to convert him to a Wang Hoa style. In my opinion, that ruined his game. His backhand is not even as good as Ma Lin.

You're right. And now XX's rpb has great improvement.
hia rpb response is faster than wang hao
god...xue fei lost to a person I've never heard of in Durban 0:3!
Table without lines is weird
Sorry, I mean without center line
Call it the 'doubles line' and everything becomes clear.
No doubles matches -> no line
Just a normal athlete that need to do better for himself and country. Far from an establish athlete. A teen.
Sounds like Japanese play by play anouncers.
XF has been nothing but disappointing. Big shame.
Never the next Wang Hao..already in late 20's now.
@@bobmalack481 too late for him :( let's see if Felix Lebrun gonna get there
