TRUE STORY: Ruger model 77 in 22 WMR, shooting at the bench from a rest at 50 yds. Using ammo made in the Philippines; can't remember the name.
Fired two shots with no problem.... 3rd shot exploded with enough force to split the Ruger laminated stock.
Magazine was completely vaporized. My left eye lasik flap was wrinkled, right eye was OK. Fortunately, vision in my left eye was not affected.
Powder burned my face, right hand was stinging from the blast. Scared the shit outta me. Been shooting for over 55 years and this was the first such incident for me.
Thank God I had eye pro on. The blast went up under the bottom edge of the left eye pro lens, between my cheek and the lens, and hence the wrinkled lasik flap on the lower left quadrant of my cornea.
Opthomologist said I was very lucky; I agree. Without the eye pro, I would have lost the eye, period.
This was RIMFIRE ammo; not handloads. The barrel was NOT obstructed.
I was astounded at the power of a little 22 WMR round and have a lot more respect for them now.
BLUF: Anybody who doesn't wear eye pro is a fool.
Served with a lot of semi-deaf vets who lost their hearing to some degree to not wearing ear pro, but that's another story.
Aim High...Go Blue.... and ALWAYS ear your eye/ear pro.

When I had my vision surgically corrected and no longer had to wear glasses, the biggest thing I enjoyed was the wide availability of safety glasses that suddenly became available to me. When I had to wear glasses, the lack of decent protective eyewear was one of my biggest issues at the range.

A friend of mine was target shooting and the wind was blowing in his face. He squeezed the shot off and immediately felt something in his eye. He ended up going to the emergency room and it was a flake of black powder that got under his eyelid. I saw 6 pairs of DeWalt brand safety glasses for $14.00 at Lowe's yesterday. Cheap insurance.

My beloved uncle was shingling the roof of a barn and he hit a nail off center. It acted like a spring, jumped off the shingle, and imbedded itself into the center of his eyeball. That guy was a stud and just pulled it out, and he continued on with his work (no trip to the doctor), and the eye just ended up being a shade lighter than the other. If he lost any visual acuity, he never complained about it. That being said, eye protection is a great idea for quite a few activities. A couple of my life goals are to: 1) live my entire with both eyes working; and 2)still have every original tooth attached to my head if at all possible:)

Hey Reid, I went to the range about ten years ago with my 22lr AR15. The wind was blowing a bit, but I wear glasses so my eyes were "protected". I fired about three mags with no problems whatsoever. On my fourth magazine, I fired about halfway through it and the wind caught a bit of powder that blew under my eyeglasses and hit me dead center in my right eyeball. I gathered my gear as best I could with one eye and headed to the ER. They looked at my eye and and the doctor said I had a blister on my eye. Put a patch over it and told me to follow up with an optometrist. It healed up and I now wear prescription goggles for shooting. Just thought I would share this because it might help save someone else.

I became a big fan of my Oakley M-frames back in the mid 90s when a 9mm +p+ hit the angle iron target stand and splattered back in my face. Scratched the lenses but I still have functioning eyes. I’ve also been hit with 00 buck that ricocheted back after smacking said angle iron stands. Wear eye pro! Harbor freight has stylish yet effective glasses for around four buck a pair. Better than nothing.

I wear impact resistant eye glasses to see. I couldn't lose the eye pro if I wanted to, but I wouldn't want to. Sometimes I wish my eye sight was better so that I could use the type of eye pro you're talking about.

I had a small piece of brass break off(the size of a pen point) a case from a semi auto handgun, and hit me in the eye even wearing eye pro. I didnt have the glasses close to my face and it came over the top and came down. I wasn't harmed, but I wear them closer now.

I require my frames stay that stay in place even when completely bent over or upside down. They won’t survive falling from scaffolding or high ladders.
I would like a pair with better ventilation as my left lens fogs over a lot.

Eye protection is important in anything you do that can possibly cause eye or facial injury. Back in late April I was cutting down a branch. The branch bounced up and hit me in the eye. It cut the inner eye and I had a black eye. Two months later I notice something wrong with left eye. Well to make a long story short. I had eye surgery a week ago. Macgular hole surgery. Wear eye protection which I will be doing .

Agreed. I haven't invested much money for a single pair, I tend to lose them, loan them out and never see them again, ect. I usually jusy buy the standard 3M clear version I find at Menards for $6-$7. It saved my ass one time, was grinding off some old paint with an angle grinder with a wire wheel, one of the wires came out and hit my lens, so hard it actually made a small indention. If that was my eye I would have been in a serious world of hurt and probably be sporting a patch or a fake eye ball.

Theres no excuse for not wearing afety glasses these days. Theres so many models.. they look like cool sunglasses. 12 to 20 bucks will buy you high quality safety glasses. Every imaginable colors and coatings...
I wear a brown driving sunglass all day every day.. yellow at night on the motorcycle because it brings out contrast.
I also have some clear for shooting.
I got a shard of steel dead center in my eye in the early 80s... doctor plucked it out with a hypo needle... after watching that... Ive been adicted to safety glasses....

Ive had several instances where eye pro has saved my eyes and I have had to replace the lenses in my Oakleys a couple of times because of that. Ive also had a couple of times where debris ricocheted just right and made it around my eye pro but fortunately didnt do permanent damage to my eyes because it had to go around my eye pro. I never train without eye pro and I never take them off while at the range as long as the range is hot. The last time eye pro saved me eyes was due to another guy at the range who had his rifle blow up.

  • @SigmaSheepdog

I couldn't agree more. Over the years, I have had two guns blow up on me, and thankfully, I had eye protection on which saved my eyes. One of the two situations involved a semi-auto rifle, and my face was peppered with unburned powder and brass fragments.

I'll admit I skipped on safety glasses for a long time. My regular glasses saved me a couple times. Once I was shooting a berm and an odd shape stone was uncovered, naturally I shot at it like an idiot about 20 yards away.. only to have lead and stone chips thrown at me. I was finding small pieces of lead all over my shirt that day. That's when I realized I'm an idiot and need actual eye protection.

We didn't have ear/eye protection or armor back then. And only the dmr M14 had glass on it in our team.

I won't even drive a lawn mower without eye pro on. Has saved my eyes a few times from stuff bouncing out from under a mower deck. Then step on a range where things are flying at your face ALL the time, it is inconceivable to not have some protection on your eyes!

  • @MtnBadger
    @MtnBadger ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was issued WileyX and loved them. Clear and smoke are optically correct and I've had my eyes saved by them and by "cheap" glasses, too. I had a pair of cheaper glasses on and was running and gunning and moving around an obstacle, I tripped and fell. On my way down, I reached out to try to catch the edge of the trailer my hand missed the trailer but it hit the handle of a hammer that was on the trailer and it flipped that thing about 3' up in the air and it was rotating other way down... I hit the ground and immediately turned my whole left side up to see what was going on and just as I did, the head of that shop hammer (2lbs) tomahawked and hit me right in the left eye lens. It all but knocked me out. It cut the bridge of my nose and I had a bruise all around my left eye and it hurt like hell but, I could still see. I absolutely guarantee you that if I hadn't been wearing those glasses,, I *would* have lost my left eye. No doubt in my mind so, that was surely a convinced for me.
Get thebestsafety/ballistic glasses you can afford, then get a second pair and take care of them andwear them. 😊
As to hearing, I was a combat munitions systems specialist back when "eyes and ears" weren't a thing... One of my disability ratings is for tinnitus/hearing loss. I was fortunate to not have an eye incident until the couple I had while wearing my glasses, it was pure luck. Now I have ballistic glasses and amplified ear pro that let me hear everything around me but cut all noise the instant it hears a loud sound. I'm never without them, now. 😊

TQs weren't standard issue at one point in time either, but I bet the people at that time would have benefited from having them. EDIT: To put a fine point on the argument that shouldn't need to be made, arguing the government (military) didn't give you something so you don't need it isn't a thought process that will lead to good things.

No eye or ear pro in the early 80's in The Corps, but will not go to the range without it now. Used to be required, but now enough people complained and the club made it optional. Shoot a .308 under a steel roof at an outdoor range without hearing protection, and see if you think that is a good idea.

I was shooting at a friend's property and his son and friend were shooting his .22 rifle. I asked if his son needed safety glasses and the answer was "no." Later on, the rifle spit out a couple sparks when ejecting the spent case and hit the boy on the eyelid and cheek. Something that could have been worse, but also prevented by wearing eye protection.

I myself have been at the range where a fragment of copper jacket impacted my cheek about a half inch below my eye pro. It didn’t embed in the skin but was enough to break the skin. Your eyeballs aren’t very resilient as even your skin. Heard another story about a special forces soldier who lost sight in an eye from an ejecting shell bounce. So yes, ppl losing eyesight is very real and happens often enough. Just because people have two eyes doesn’t mean they both function.
