i am really appreciative you didnt put the english meanings on the screen but rather left them in the subtitles. makes the video perfect for auditory notecards
This is awesome! As a Yankee learning Russian I struggle with pronunciation. It doesn't matter that I don't know the meaning of the word as I will undoubtedly encounter it later. By replaying this video over and over I will not only remember the proper pronunciation of the word when I DO encounter it, it will help me see the pronunciation patterns so I have a better chance with new words! It's also good oral gymnastics for a mouth only used to speaking English!
Thanks! I'm glad you found this helpful! I made this mainly to practice pronunciation; then I added translations as subtitles. If you want to activate them, click on the CC icon at the bottom-right on the video player, and choose the language from the settings menu.
24th word - to live - it is "жить" - zhit', not "прожить" prozhit'. Prozhit' - it means to live a life from birth to death, or to live any length of time.
Excellent lesson. For pronounciation. And great because you show us a thousand common words. Please produce a similar one for verbs and adjectives. and phrases. We appreciate your sharing. Thank you.
A lot of useful words in big letters.. Difficult to do it at one time. Better to do it in spurts. English translation is achieved when you click on subtitles at the bottom of the screen. Although in smaller text, it's readable. If you click on settings you can bring up subtitles and activate the different languages you can access. I'm not sure which languages can actually be accessed but it's worth a try. Thanks so much for making these videos available. xxxxxx

You really need to learn how to pronounce each word first. Each day come in and learn and by seeing how it is spelt, you might be able after awhile to put the sentences together. This by far is the best. Instead of learning the alphabet like some teach, it is best just to learn how to pronounce words. I really like how this is put together. Makes it easy on an old timer like me 61. Once you can pronounce the words, you can listen to sentences and learn how to do that properly. As far as reading or spelling the words, you are not going to need that so much. but this way on this video you can see the way they are spelled and after awhile will recognize what they are. I feel excited to learn this now. Thanks to whom ever did it this way.
I am native Russian speaker. It is a voice of Google translate. I would not recommend learning pronunciation from a robot. It is kinda accurate but nobody speaks like that. It is like Siri or Alexa can speak English but you know it is not a human voice

Very interesting observation! A quantitative measure of that fact can be obtained by computing the average word length in english and russian word lists. +Kiselek -- Yes, you're right, videos with images would be far more useful, but collecting pictures implies far more work. I have a hard time understanding why certain vowels like E or O sometimes change sound in different words. Is there any structure to this or is this something you'll just have to cram inside your head?
E will sound like an English E in case that it is a loanword, otherwise it will sound like ye/je. When it comes to O I share your confusion. Often time if there are 2 o:s in a word one of the O will have an "A"- soundand the other one an o-sound.
there's no structure tbh, you'll just have to remember. But the more you speak/practice, you'll get used to the changes in E/O and it'll come naturally even when you learn new words. Also the russian "G", is pronounced as V in some words.
the only structure is if the letter is stressed or not. but in that case you would have to know where the accent mark is at. a lot of writings ive seen dont have it shown, take a look into the grammar, it'll help get an understanding a little better
"e" is pronounced as "je" if there is NO consonant right before it. In all other cases it is just pronounced as "e". "o" changes to "a" if the emphasis of the word lies on this "o" ( 1:27 for instance)
