    Thank you for taking the time to put this video up. I felt like it took a little bit too long to get to the point. The quickest way that I found online is to go to logic pro then click on settings once you click on settings choose audio then under the general tab make sure you have software monitoring checked! Then you will be able to hear yourself as you record

    Just a tidbit here, I just experienced a similar problem and it was due to one of my plugins being out of date. So it wouldn’t let any audio play, not monitoring or recorded audio. Once I disabled that particular plugin I could hear myself again. If you do all this and it still doesn’t work then try disabling your plugins to see if one of them are causing the issue. For me it was auto-tune.

    another reason you may not be able to hear your self through the cans is you need to click on the orange "I" for input monitoring in the record track

    Another option for reducing CPU load when recording in a large project is freezing tracks. That frees up a lot of CPU power and reduces the number of system overloads, in my experience. Thanks, Chris!

  • @ssuraea

    One thing I do a lot is to have direct monitoring from my interface AND Logic input monitoring on. But I add a reverb to the vocal channel and set it to fully wet (no dry vocal at all). So then I can hear my voice with zero latency, but also hear a reverb which I can turn up or down using the channel fader. Logic does not record plug ins, so I get a clean, dry vocal recording to play with. Also, I don't set up multiple tracks for recording. I just have one set up in this way and I drag recorded regions onto new tracks for playback.

      Great idea. I’ve never thought of doing it this way but it sounds the perfect solution. I’ll be trying this setup out tomorrow for some vocals I’m recording. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Logic Pro DOES rule! I have learned a lot by myself, noodling around and such as Logic is quite intuitive, but . . . watching a number of your videos has certainly helped me with tips and shortcuts! THANK YOU!
    In recording vocals, we often simply use our Allen & Heath Zedi10FX (which is also a 4x4 interface) with both external USB mics direct into Logic as well as a Mic routed though one of the the Zed's interface channels, returning on channels 3/4 for headphone monitoring. We usually wait to add our vocals to the project last, in what we call "master 1," which has mixed and early mastered most plugin and effects, leaving a lot of cpu processing room available. We then record vocals clean, adding any desired effects after the fact. Hope this adds to the discussion.
    Thanks again for your insights, knowledge, and enthusiastic offerings!

    I had a project last month where I set the buffer too small and got the pops and clicks. Took many google searches and random button pushing till I figured out the problem and removed it. This is all good stuff Chris. I love how you explain what is going on and how to resolve the problem.

    Great video! I use focusrite control with logic pro, with my Clarett 8 Pre, and this is a constant struggle trying to hear myself, but also wanting to put a little bit of reverb on my vocal, when recording, but when I hear it in my headphones I hear the delay, and I drive myself mad switching through the input monitoring or turning off the monitor mix in focusrite control to stop the latency delay. Otherwise, recording dry has no issues at all.😊

    If you have mixer software for your interface, you can also mute the channel there. That will eliminate the doubling effect and let you hear the audio coming from Logic with plugins applied. It is essentially the same thing as turning the fader down on the interface software or turning off the physical direct monitoring button on the interface.

    Hey Chris. Great video as usual. However, at 10:40 - there appears to be LESS latency when leaving the adaptive limiter enabled, as opposed to when it is inactive. Maybe its a video/sound capture issue. 🤔 Thoughts? Almost 13ms of latency at a 128 buffer size for a flagship interface on an M1 mac, is pretty disappointing. For vocals, one can run through direct monitoring and have no issues. But for guitar players playing through various amp simulators, this will not be ideal because software monitoring is the only way to hear the guitar effects while recording live. Thanks for the content as always.

    Wow!! This is very helpful, Chris!! I used to hear the voice I was recording having some delay, but I activated the low latency mode, and it worked perfectly!
    Would you recommend adding some EQ or Reverb while recording voices?

  • @ReubenWalton

    I have the SSL 2+ interface and it didn't come with a separate software mixer of any kind. So I only have Logic Pro X to work with as far as figuring out this problem of not being able to hear myself when I'm recording vocals over my self-produced tracks. That's a big problem that I don't see a way to solve.

    • @marcuslewis8890
      @marcuslewis8890 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the interface, there is a monitor mix knob. One side is labeled “input” the other is “usb”. Turn the knob all the way to USB to hear the sound through Logic. Turn it all the way to “input” to direct monitor from the interface. You can set the knob somewhere between the two to get a blend of both.
      Also make sure your SSL is the interface Logic is using in the audio preferences for Logic.

    On the other hand, I have a Pre amp and that also detects my microphone. I have spent hours in this issue. Would be great if could help me please.

    At 9:32 in I heard just as much delay, if not more, not less like you said. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @JeremyHalterman
      @JeremyHalterman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that’s a video editing goof and that the delay wasn’t coming from Logic. It seems to be fixed after the jump cut, and also I can’t imagine there could possibly be that much latency with that buffer size, those plug-ins, and a single input. I use an M1 Mac Mini with dozens of plug-ins in real time and have never experienced latency like that even with an inferior interface.

    • @viggi1917
      @viggi1917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I heard the same thing. I would hope it's a video editing blunder like Jeremy mentioned. However, the Symphony Desktop is a usb2 over usbc interface. Even the fact that at a buffer size of 32 samples, there was already 8.5ms of roundtrip latency. My entry level interface at 32 samples reads 3.3ms of roundtrip latency. At a buffer of 128 samples, the roundtrip latency from the Symphony Desktop was reading almost 13ms in the video. That is very audible when recording. Hopefully someone can provide clarification for you...and me? For a flagship interface, those latency figures are dissapointing.

    • @TC_Conner
      @TC_Conner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@viggi1917 I'm on an M1 24" iMac, in Logic Pro my sample is 64, but I don't record a billion tracks, I rarely have over 10! Latency is a non-issue for me so far.

    I have a related question about Logic sound output/EQ if you don't mind. I'm using a Clarett going into Yamaha HS8 monitors. By looking at the frequency chart for these monitors and more importantly by listening, you can see and hear a cut around 7-8k for about 3 dB (it affects the vocals in particular). I can go to the Stereo Outs on each project and add a Nova EQ and push it up in that area for 3 dB, but that gets old. Do you know of a way within Logic in the prefs or otherwise to add an EQ on the actual Master Outs so I don't have to do it per project. I will also look into SoundSource, I think it works on the whole OS, but until i test it, I don't know how it would integrate with Logic. Thanks, Dave

    Hi Chris, thanks for the video! I'm having issues hearing myself in playback. Both input and output is set to my Scarlett 2i2, and I can see that I successfully recorded audio, but when I play it back to edit, there is no sound through my headphones. Does this have anything to do with the green monitoring light that appears at the top right of my Scarlett 2i2? Thank you!

    Tried everything and headphones still won’t play while recording so I can’t even record without tbe beat bleeding into the audio. One time they randomly worked and even then, I didn’t hear the full spectrum of the beat but rather just the bass, kicks, snares etc. I got this going good a while ago and then apple updated the imac and everything stopped working, Had to go thru a 5 hour process to revert back to the apple version I had before and so far Logic has been nothing short of a nightmare for me just because of this. Also I’m using a Universal Apollo MK11 interface.

    I almost solved everything but I still have a problem. I'm trying to record my voice through a vocoding plugin (wave ovox)... my voice will be recorded in an audio track (muted) meanwhile the midi track, which takes the signal from the audio track will record the midi datas and it will give me back the voice processed by the vocoder . Although I followed the steps now Logic allows me to hear me trying up only when the session is playing and not when it is in stop. This doesn't allow me to find the sound I'm looking for in a comfortable way.
    Thanks in advance if you want to help me.

    When the I/O buffer size is set to 1024, does the roundtrip delay also apply with regular playback via the audio interface?
    Sometimes midi especially seems a bit sluggish.

    Im Recording for 15 Years. Cubase mostly. The first time i see the Microphone being able to record and Cubase stamps the tracks. I hear everything but not the Microphone. The "Listen" checkbox is "gray". The PC sees the Microphone ect. Everything seems normal. Whatever i try, in Cubase or not, the Microphone is not being heard through the Headphones.
    -
    I have a Gaming PC with a NIVIDIA GTX 660 Grafikcard. HDMI connection. The standard PC sound through TV-Set (Windows 10).
    I installed Asio4All and Realtek drivers. Everything seems to work well. The signal arrives in Cubase and records it. Nomatter what i do, i can not hear the Microphone, which makes working absolutely horrible.
    -
    A Cubase SX and a Cubase LE 12 version. Both show a gray checkbox which is supposed to be checked. Its uncheckable.
    The Windows10 Sound Config is absolutely horrible, yet it seems to be easy. But i think its horrible.
    So im trying, since 3 days, to hear the Signal through the Headphones, it wont happen.
    -
    I tried it in Audacity as well. No Mic sound through the headphones. I hear everything. Only after recording the Audio is heard.
    Thats the first time in 15 years where im stuck for 3 days with this issue.
    -
    I remember 20 years ago when first using Cubase, the Checkbox had to be checked to Monitor the vocals. I learned from that lol.
    So where is the problem?
    Is it the Windows10 ? Is it the USB Studio-Microphone (but the Analog Mic has the same issue as well, so Analog or USB,same issue).
    Is it because its a Gaming PC with a GrafikCard? (Gigabyte Gaming 970 Motherboard, onBoard Sound).
    -
    First time i have this issue. I also have to say, i used Win7 until last year. Win10 is quite a "APP" and i dont like it.
    The second issue, but isnt really a issue, when i open Cubase, i have to change the SoundDriver every time.
    I have to switch from Nividia to Realtek (example) or else the sound will be played by the TV-Set.
    When closing Cubase, i have to again switch to Nividia. (Horrible). lol.
    -
    So how the hell am i going to get Win10 to play the Microphone signal through my headphones and how do i change the grey checkbox so that i can check it to Monitor while recording?
    -
    3 Days... i watched many videos , read a few blogs... nothing solves my issue.
