I had that same set up in my 75 911 3.2 motronic with SSI's and a chip ant it was a complete game changer compared to the unreliable 2.7 I replaced. I have owned over 35 cars and my biggest regret was letting go of my 75 911 with the 3.2. Very fast car with incredible reliability
There is a reason why people say the 3.2 is the best you can get. And I agree. I am located in Germany and own a Euro Spec high compressed 3.2 Carrera for 13 Years now. Over the course if the years, mine lost the catalytic converter for better breathing, replaced by an empty pipe for better Sound. Mine has the 915 and i would never swap it with a G50 because i think only the 915 provides the unique 70th race feeling of old cars. I added the gate shifter kit and it now feels as smooth as a Winchester rifle. It is in my opinion the best and most reliable air cooled flat six and by the way the only one which is certified as an aircraft engine for the Mooney. This enginge allows everything: shopping for a pint of milk in the morning and being on the racetrack in the afternoon and that for 200.000 miles. A 308 Ferrari of the same era needs New bearings every 50.000 miles. In comparison with a 930 the 3.2 is the golden Nugget. The 930 is nice for 2 hours, but as a daily driver it really sucks. The driveability is next to 0. Cool on a racetrack but dangerous on normal roads....Kind of an unpredictable free radical. All over, the G Model has won every important race of the World at least twice. No other car can put that on it's menue. It is a piece of rolling Art and history. Probably the only one of it's kind. And still fast and very demanding even today - if you understand how to drive it. If not, you find yourself in a ditch pretty fast. Greetings from the fatherland 😉
964 owner here… and yes, the way you feel nicely ensconced in the smaller, older cockpits is special. The newer cars are a bit large, so you do lose the drama and mechanical essence of the car under the technology. You might try a 964, because the a/c actually works and the ABS is helpful. They are classic, but modern enough to enjoy daily.
I think my dilemma would be that I would love a 964, Jon, but then couldn’t afford one! I know this because I drove an immaculate one just a month ago! Hey ho. One day! Cheers!
Great review, Jay! I feel the same comparison can be made for the mid-engined cars. I’ve had a 718 Boxster for a bit more than a year. Love the car. I decided to get into track days and bought an older 987 Cayman for this purpose. The older of the two cars is very special. Hydraulic steering, feels smaller and lighter. Something special about it.
I love this review. Jay gives the viewer a good sense of what’s it’s like to drive a car that I know very well, faults and all. It’s a special car, indeed. This hot rod captures the 911ness of that impact bumper era as well as any! Jay is such a lovely guy, too. His vibe comes through in his videos as easily as it does in person. A good watch then!
@@JAYREAD Agreed! I'm glad we both had the pleasure of driving it. Not everyone gets to enjoy a vintage outlaw from the driver's seat. We'll miss it, won't we. It's going to auction on Bring a Trailer any day, now.
Nice video, nice car. The only negative is calling a Porsche a Hot Rod, America has an obsession with the term. For me a Hot Rod is more akin to a lake special or a 1934 5 window with an LS motor fitted. Another you tuber loves calling some of his Porsche's Hot Rods. The term Outlaw is much more fitting.
To me hot rod means modified, souped up,super stock and not available in stores. I'd say the engine swap boosting displacement qualifies. Still Hot Rod also should be a V8 with a huge chrome supercharger sticking up through the hood, big slicks on the back and skinny bike tires on the front.
congrats on another fun video! great job. I've always wanted a 911 T , still on my bucket list! A Porsche is something special and even better when you own one or a few! Enjoy Jay.
Great video mate, I enjoyed it very much.. as a proud owner I can 100% confirm that they are totally a driver's car. I have a friend who owns a 2019 gt3 and he still prefers to drive my 80's SC
If you drove this car and then a stick 1974 you would describe it as a “Hot Rod” as well! Great video. I own and drive something very similar as often as I can. Loved cars all my life and have owned and driven many old and new Porsches! Great video.
Great vid Jay You’d be surprised how easy these cars are to live with. When you talk about loudness in the cabin, I can tell you my 964 with intake and exhaust mods is quieter when cruising than my GT4. AC on these cars can be pretty effective (mine is) but driving an old 911 with the windows down is glorious. And you can drive this car all day hot or cold, rain or shine. So it’s a really good point about pricing - crazy to think an air cooled car is beginning to represent great value!
I LOVED the noise! It didn’t offend me in the slightest and it’s not the cars fault that I chose to drive it on one of the hottest days. I suspect that 85% of the time, it’d be fine! Cheers Andy!
I agree with you on all levels including the discomfort of driving one on a hot summers day, cue; I am driving a 993 cab to the south of france and around the country in a few days. Should be interesting with no AC😁
I was waiting for you to say I'm keeping the key's. I'm sure a man of your talents could fit an electrically powered A/C unit and uprate the alternator etc.
@@JAYREAD more generally, across this series of videos, you've made some jolly good couture decisions. I think you need to step up though, with a sponsor/partner, and get a clothing label onboard.
Vintage air cooled.have little in common with modern 911's, save perhaps the Bonnet Badge. I think the biggest item is the age of the driver/owner. I am a product of the 70's and 80's and there are no nicer looking 911's than those from that era. And I own a 996 - sometimes I don't think its even a relative to these vintage ones.
How I love thee old air cooled Porsches let me count the ways. First this car is smog exempt here and that's huge. No paying every two years and praying you pass. No $$$Catalytic converters to fail and set off check engine lights. No water to leak, boil or freeze. No freeze plugs, thermostat, water hoses, reservoir or radiators. How about the placement of the new radiators? First thing to get destroyed. You can tell they're an afterthought and nowhere better to put them. No IMS bearing. Dang that thing anyway. You can actually see the engine and it's sweet. No fly by wire but real mechanical steering. Chips? We don't need no stinking chips. Maybe there's one in the simple fuel injection, maybe not. Simple means reliable and less likely to need expensive parts. Yes,old parts are hard to find but they made them to last. Not like today's plastic trash. Classic cars get cooler every day while everything else just gets older.
The great unsung hero and incredible bargain in the Porsche family is without question the Boxster. 90% of what a 911 can do at about 50% of the price. Porsche deliberately detuned early Boxsters so it wouldn't outshine the vaunted legacy model 911. Newer Porsches lost the plot. People fuss over leather wrapped consoles and other nonsense. Too much tech. Too much focus on recyclability. Nothing shouts unsustainable as a car that is not built to last. Buy a well-built classic, maintain it and do the planet a favor.
Eventually all the "tech" ad ons are gonna go out of date and what we are left with will be a bunch of cars with permanent record players, built in disco balls, forever 8 track players and a slew of RCA jacks. In addition we'll need special computers to get them to run and those will be years obsolete with impossible to find programing software that could only be found in the deepest, dustiest shelves of random garages and thrift stores.
