    I am new to electronics at 73! I have been watching tube radio repair videos for awhile as I have an older Philco table radio I would like to go through. This video is one of the best that I have seen! So well organized and your teaching as you go along was great. Watching you do your testing was very instructive. Please do more of these.

    We had a GE AA5 back in the 60s .. my audio memory says it died of SMD, and was tossed, long before I had the ability to diagnose/fix it .. thanks 4 the recap of the recap …

    I have watched a lot of your newer videos and think they are great. I know nothing about electronics but after you and one or two other people on youtube I am going to try my hand at seeing if I can bring a few old radios back to life. I have a Emerson DC308 and a Hallicrafters S-38b I am going look at first. I also picked up an SX-28 today from a local guy that will be a project sometime down the road when and if I get good at getting the first two up and going. My main interest is shortwave tube radios.
    Keep the video coming as you have a lot of very good tips for the new person on a budget. I found you video on probes very interesting and plan on putting a few together.

    Probably one of your best videos in my opinion Tony. I always prefer to watch the actual repairs in real time rather than editing them out. Cutting the resistor was hilarious. I've done it before myself, except it was a bypass cap for audio that was kind of expensive, and was my last one. It happens man.

    Nice video...That looks like a Panasonic RF-800 on the right, on the table. I have that radio, and one similar is a Panasonic RF-728

    Do you ever use a solder sucker,or just the quick ,stuff,and what kind of solder gun is that ,what type replacement capacitor's do you use for a replacement, for the white caps

  • @nor4277
    @nor4277 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you keep the resisters the same value,or can you use a two percent metal film resister ,because a lot of tube radio run hot,or would the two percent through it off to much

    Dear xraytonyb, you make that desoldering look so easy, I know that you have done that for a long time, when I try using the soldering wic, I can never get it to work....

    • @xraytonyb
      @xraytonyb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Try putting a little bit of liquid flux on it first. That sometimes helps. Some of the solder wick out there doesn't have enough flux, if at all. I use Chemwick, which works well, but it is a lot more expensive.

    That black fake speaker flap may be a passive bass speaker port.

    Why didn’t you measure the grid voltage on the output valve.

    Could Glasslinger make you a new vacuum tube to replace the one you broke, it would have been nice to have made it battery operated using 5x PP9 9V batteries for the B+ and 6V or 3V for the heater and lose the mains cable just an idea.

    The output valve obviously is running into grid current. If the cathode voltage was high then that would cause the current to be lower assuming the grid was not going positive. You should have gone straight to the grid and measured the voltage,

    You could cut the lead right at the resistor and make a J hook...it works good for me.

    This is the only tube radio I have seen in which AVC was applied to the audio preamp stage, as well as the converter and the IF amplifier.

      i've know of an odd few 30s or 40s models here in the uk..but the ones i've heard of used a strange vari mu triode with double diode instead of vari mu pentode!

    • @andygozzo72
      @andygozzo72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      dont think that B7G based 12CR6 diode pentode was ever used or even available here, but we certainly did have EAF42s, UAF42s, which were B8A based, and B9A based EBF and UBF 80 and 89s, and very occasionally EAF801s

    What would seem to be the simplest of radios, require a lot of skill, knowledge of electronics, and equipment...Not to mention..great deal of patience..I’m looking for direction on a 70’s equalizer, and now realizing, Nope better not attempt it..Where do you start?

    Unnecessarily to long of a video. Most of these tech videos are to windy, to much talk not connected to the topic.
