- The STORY OF QUEEN VICTORIA and her record breaking reign began with a COMICAL CORONATION in Westminster Abbey on 28 June 1838. Indeed it is one of the fun facts about Queen Victoria, a woman who would go on to become arguably Britain’s most famous monarch, that her time on the throne began in such a haphazard fashion, with a peer of the realm who literally fell at her feet (though not on purpose), a painful mishap with the coronation ring, an altar which was turned into a buffet table and an ill-prepared and perhaps rather dozy Bishop, who managed to miss out crucial bits of the ceremony when he accidentally turned two pages in a book at once. The British coronation ceremony is supposed to be a sombre affair, full of meaning and centuries of tradition, but this young woman’s became one of the many funny royal stories which pop up within the British royal family through the ages. This teenage monarch and record breaking royal took it all in good spirits however and it certainly had no negative impact on the life of Queen Victoria. If you’ve ever wondered though, what is a coronation like, especially when it goes wrong, this History Calling video is for you. It will also explain how the ceremony was altered because of Victoria’s gender, mention the Crown jewels of England and show what is perhaps the most famous throne in the world; St Edward’s Chair. Much of the history you’ll hear here will be drawn from Queen Victoria’s diary, in which she provided an insider’s view of the whole ceremony and its many idiosyncrasies.

Upon a second go the fact of no rehearsal is really silly given how quick the time from death to Coronation. In current theater Rowan Atkinson as the lead cleric would work a treat.
Sure hope there is more on Victoria as The Empire peaked during her reign.
I feel like it would probably be funnier in person, kind if like you had to be there kind of thing. But honestly, most of it sounds horrific, a ring shoved on your finger that doesn't fit and a crown that's so tight it gives you headaches, not being well prepared during rehearsal, forgetting two important pages, I'm amazed she handled it so eloquently.
It's funny though that everything that could go wrong did go wrong. I'm glad they fixed the forgotten pages though, because if they didn't, someone probably could have taken the throne or something.
Yes, it was a bit of a car crash (or perhaps coach crash) of a ceremony. :-) All the Lords and Ladies scrambling for the coronation medal gives me a smile.
She handled herself like a true royal. After that long day and the pain she endured she came home and bathed her dog. I really liked that part. She was like a regular girl there. Thank you for another great video. Have a great weekend.

She was a new queen, but she loved her dog and her only friend in childhood.
Victoria was complex and her reign cemented Britain and an imperial power in the 19th century which ultimately toppled after her death as her grandkids were suddenly at war with one another. Her legacy is dramatic, iconic, and somewhat archaic but that is what makes her my favourite monarch
Yes. That was a nice, back-to-reality touch. Young Victoria was only just out of childhood when she inherited the Crown. Its great value to her at that time, was her ability to break free from the clutches of her mother and make her own decisions.
Imagine that! Mistakes at the coronation! I love it! They are indeed just like us plain folk. Bless her heart, a 19 year old girl who handled herself with much more dignity than all the knighted, saintly, and gentrified folk there. My favorite part…her kindness to the elderly gentleman who was trying so hard to pay her homage. Her humbleness, kindness and respect for this man spoke volumes about their new queen. Thank you for sharing this unique and charming story.

This is my favorite History Calling episode! Instead of another grisly Tudor execution, we have a "kinder, gentler" monarch. My favorite part is that even while she was in so much discomfort from the tight ring and headgear, Victoria carried on without complaining.

I know and it really is heavy, not to mention how petite Victoria was. I wouldn't have been amused at having to lug it round with me. They really should have done a few rehearsals for the whole thing. They're sooo lucky TV hadn't been invented yet! :-)

Queen Victoria's handling of the coronation gaffes and her very kind gesture to Rolle really speaks to her character, grace and kindness. She is one of my favorite royals. Great video!🙂
Yes, I like her too. She became a lot more difficult in later life (an absolute nightmare of a controlling mother in fact), but she's great fun when she's younger.
I was having lunch with some friends and played part of this video for them so they could enjoy your accent with me. They were very interested in the series so I hope they become regular viewers. Being raised Catholic, I took some devilish delight in the altar being used as a bouffet (!). The jamming of the ring on her finger sounds awful but Victoria showed real poise and class descending the stairs for poor Lord Rolle. My favorite part was her responding to her dog barking; I'm in love with our two schnauzers. Your videos never disappoint. Well done. Be well and stay safe.

my family and i have two schnauzers too!! we have two mini black ones, and they rlly are the best!
@@happinessforeverandalwaysI also have two schnauzers! Both are minis, Mazy is 14 and grey, and Stevie Jane is 6 and black and silver. They are such funny little dogs and are just delightful to be around. And they bark. If you are reading this, non schnauzer owning individual, they bark, it’s what they do. But, they will also cuddle you and make you laugh so it’s worth the barking.
That's hilarious. It shows what happens when you don't practice first. My Dad was a Presbyterian Minister. Once, he had to do a wedding that had both Catholic and Presbyterian parts of it but the Catholic Priest failed to show up for the dress rehearsal. The wedding was quite hilarious not only because the Priest was unprepared and didn't know the whole service but he was drunk too. My Dad had to lead him around the whole time.
Cramming the too little ring sounds so painful. Can’t imagine, but the Lord falling down must have been hilarious. I wonder why they were all so unprepared. Another great video! Thank you.
Thanks Anna. They started organising very late (only in March 1838 I think) so it was all a bit rushed. The ring sounds horrible. I bet he took some of the skin off her knuckle pushing it on.
Great question, especially seeing as how it had only been 7 years since the previous coronation for William IV. William did change quite a bit of things for his crowning, so perhaps that added to the confusion of reorganizing without the subtractions that William requested. Oddly enough, her successor's coronation, Edward VII, 64 years later, went over well in 1902 apart from a delay due to the new King's illness.

It is kind of comforting to know that this kind of thing happens to everyone, no matter what their status! I’ll bet it helped keep her from getting _too_ nervous at her wedding, too.
Any modern coronation would be rehearsed to death and every single detail would be choreographed to perfection. It's fascinating to see how this wasn't always true and even grand events surrounding the monarchy weren't always handled with the obsessive perfectionism we would expect today.
I’m such a huge fan of all things Queen Victoria. Interesting how she was able to take it all in stride and go with the flow in her early reign compared to her controlling manner in later post-Albert life. More Victoria please!

Thank you for this most enjoyable video on Queen Victoria's Coronation. For me, the worst bit was the pain she endured from the tight ring and the tight crown. No rehearsal certainly was a bad idea and then everyone putting on their crowns at the same time as she had was amusing. The portraits of her captured her beauty on the most important occasion, the first of many to be sure!

I've read several biographies and seen a movie or two about Queen Victoria. I've never heard of the botched Coronation. Very interesting. She really was an amazing young woman.
Yes, I'm surprised it's not better known about actually, but I suppose there's so much to discuss in relation to Victoria, that some details invariably get left out.
@@HistoryCalling Great point. It seems as if her early reign is less discussed when compared to the latter years, with the Age of Empire and all. That also seems to be the case with the current Queen's early reign.

For some reason I am fascinated by royal history and I really love this video of behind the scenes info and the plain humanity of it all.
I personally have a fascination for queen Victoria..she is my all time favorite queen ..and i even love my darling Diana equally..
The cutest thing was when she raced to the barking of her doggie and gave it a bath.
She showed great composure and dignity throughout her coronation with all its mishaps.
So charming. A little humour should never hurt a good coronation.

Yes, I had to laugh that the only reason she went into her mother's room that night was to get a good view of the fireworks. Beyond that the Duchess of Kent doesn't get a mention in her diary entry for the day. A very strained relationship, for sure.

Very interesting video about this remarkeble monarch and day. However a small correction: the fourth wing, the East front, which is the Palace facade towards the Mall didn't exist in 1838.
It was constructed in 1846 by architect Edward Blore to accommodate the expanding family of Queen Victoria. It changed the plan of the building from a U-shape in to a square. To enable the construction, the entrance porch, now called Marble Arch, was relocated.
Presumably, everyone was so in awe of how monumental the occasion was and deferential to the new Queen and various important figures, they didn't dare put anyone through the disrespect of making then do a rehearsal. I bet she would have been incredibly grateful to have a run through and know what she was supposed to do! 🙂 It's amazing they even got the ring wrong!
I think if even the officiating clergy had done a run through, along with the choir, that would have been enough to carry the day, but it really does seem to have been slightly shambolic, albeit in quite an amusing way. It's probably for the best that the previous coronation had only been a few years earlier, so at least those attending will have had some idea what to do.
@@HistoryCalling Tbf, Sailor Billy had left the royals in a bit of a downturn. The antics of all the royals scrambling to provide an heir, ditching mistresses and the like, was enough to make the public rather sour about the monarchy at that point. The treasury was low, the public's enthusiasm was low, and the people in charge weren't all that excited about a 19 yr old girl on the throne. Victoria's coronation actually changed a lot of perceptions. Her graciousness, beauty, charm, and sweet patience, won over a lot of hearts. It might have been a series of unfortunate events, but it began the making of her as the woman who restored the monarchy in England to respectability. :)
Yes, the story of how Victoria even came to be born, after the death of her cousin Charlotte, is quite interesting. She did indeed restore a lot of popularity to the monarchy, at least until she withdrew into mourning after Albert's death.

For the next monarch, maybe we could modernise / change / completely revamp the the Royal line of accession... I don't think I would have kept my composure through that ceremony. I question tho why the clergy were so ill-prepared for the ceremony considering that William's coronation was less than a decade before and I imagine all the same bishops were present at that one. I definitely would have expected such an important ceremony to have been rehearsed to death before the main event.
I know. It was shockingly poorly organised. I think I'd have been rolling my eyes at the very least had I been in Victoria's position, or possibly just laughing!
Maybe some of them felt like they didn’t need to really rehearse since they had done it not so long ago! I’m sure they were absolutely mortified and went over and over it in their minds until the day they died. Although, without any kind of camera, at least the mistakes wouldn’t be seen by generations of people!
My mental picture of the archbishop trying to jam the ring on the wrong finger is quite amusing. I don't think there's any graceful way to do that, especially on the fly, as anyone who has seen that at a wedding can attest. LOL!! Regardless of the lack of rehearsal and the folly, Victoria was well and queen at the end of the day, and that's what matters! 💗👑

Thanks History Calling really enjoyed this one. So many stuff ups. I think the sight of all the Lords and Ladies scrambling around for the medals would have been good to watch. Given the occasion, Victoria coming down the steps to Lord Rolle was pretty special. @@HistoryCalling People have a fascination with that stuff. It's all psychological, it stems from the fascination of death. It's not that people are dark or macabre, it's just that big ol mystery of death, and why people are into it. If you look into the streaming services, lots of the top 10 shows are true crime shows, shows about...ta-dah...death. Deep down we all have a curiousity about life's most baffling mystery, death, so I'm not shocked at all. Paranormal shows are huge, they deal in...ta-da...death. Too much of it though can put a strain on the mind. Don't let it get to ya, human beings are oddities. :)
You're so right. I lose track of the number of murder related shows I see on Netflix, Prime and even just regular TV. It's like an epidemic! On the upside, hopefully this means people will like next week's video more than this one. You'll see what I mean on Friday!

Welcome aboard! :-) I'm from Northern Ireland, but our accents have a lot in common with Scotland, so it's an easy mistake to make. If you heard me speaking off TH-cam, you'd also hear a lot of 'och' 'aye' and 'wee' as well :-)

It is an interesting contrast to the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II who infamously lost the chain of state from around his neck in the middle of the ceremony and decided just to leave it there. Symbolism and the contrast couldn't be starker.

I'm very glad the fireworks went well at least - things can get real hectic when those go wrong - I would guess earlier monarchs might not be so forgiving of crowns that don't fit and rings jammed on the wrong finger - Victoria was pretty easy going in her youth apparently - the hinted video about Cromwell and royal jewels sounds good - how about Charles I art collection as well
I completely agree about the fireworks. Monarchs could have crowns made or altered to fit them at least, so I don't think there were ever any really bad misfits. Yes, the crown jewels have a great story (as do the Scottish and Irish crown jewels for that matter). Charles' art collection would be fascinating, but maybe tough to do, depending on copyright restrictions around images of the paintings :-(
@@HistoryCalling - they had no concept of the benefit of rehearsal at that time it seems - most modern weddings are better planned perhaps - I'm not suggesting an inventory of all the art - it would just flesh out the details of how Cromwell wrecked a lot of beautiful things - castles and church windows too - no wonder everyone wanted a King again

It seems that disorganized coronations ran in her family. George III had an equally messed up one, to which someone (I can’t remember who) said in front of the King that they would do better next time. King George III apparently found this extremely amusing. I can’t remember the exact quotes as I am now 52 and was about 14 in grade 10 in Canada when I did Mad King George for one of my 4 obligatory speeches in English Class. I remember something about all candles being lit simultaneously with flax strings connecting them, which of course caused flaming bits and ash to fall on those below. I would like to have you do something on poor King George III and George II (who all I remember about was that he had his morning cup of chocolate, went into the water closet and fell down dead. ) Please. My other speeches, which I did over and over from grade 2 on in both English and French were : King Henry III and his wives, the sinking of the Bismarck (my mother had Churchill’s WW2 diaries and would read them all to us in the shade of the trees of an afternoon all summer between gr 1 & 2. I still remember that Bismarck was in volume 5) and the Hindenburg disaster. But George, I only did the once and don’t remember much except that he had an enormous amount of children with name like the Cabbage Patch Kids (just out and popular at the time I wrote the speech.

Being rather uncouth when woken up by a loud racket, I would have thrown open the window and shouted for the noise to cease because a royal was trying to sleep. 😄😄
They'd probably just have cheered her though :-) I remember hearing that Princess Diana was sleep deprived the night before her wedding for the exact same reason.

You're welcome. I realised after a while that the auto captioning system REALLY couldn't understand my accent (though some of the fails were quite funny), so when TH-cam amended its captioning procedures so that I could upload my scripts (which I couldn't do when I started a year ago) I began to do that.
I bet if those responsible for organising the occasion could look down now they would be very glad that television broadcasting and the internet were not invented yet XD
I find it quite interesting that they didn't have a feast or banquet afterwards as a way to save money. Was there some financial trouble with the royal or national purse at the time?
I'm not sure myself why there was such a drive to save money. I suspect her Hanoverian predecessors had spent a lot and the new regime wanted to show that they weren't as wasteful, but I'd need to look into it more.

Fortunately Victoria had at least two breaks during the ceremony where she could go to the bathroom. It’s hoped she didn’t have her period on the day of her coronation.

Even though it’s not funny the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II goes down as the beginning of the bad things that were to happen during the Tsar’s reign. Apparently during the height of it vendors ran out of beer and pretzels and there was a riot and a human stampede that caused quite a handful of deaths and injuries.
Sounds like an exhausting day. Still she was crowned Queen which is what mattered.
I can't believe "Coronation, Starscream? This is bad comedy." would fit an actual coronation.

Why "to be our Head and Prince", not Princess? and in any case she was Queen, not a Prince. Very odd. I think they make it all up as they go, with too much red wine... 🤓
I've heard that Prince instead of Princess before. I'm not sure, but I think it's just to emphasise that she's as good as a man.

I think with her hastily put together coronation and that she was a beautiful young woman just added to the confusion of the men surrounding her.
She certainly seemed to have a better idea of what was happening than they did :-)

I remember getting a ring stuck on my finger, so I used bacon fat to get it off. But, I'm assuming that wouldn't be dignified for her situation.
Whatever works :-) I'll bet if she'd thought bacon fat would have removed the ring more quickly and easily she'd have done it. It's a good idea 😊
I am amused to find out that there is an actual stone of scone… I only know of such a stone in a book by Terry Pratchett. The whole ceremony seemed like a comedy of errors.

Scone is pronounced SKOON. Also, Buckingham Palace didn't look like that when Victoria ascended the throne. It was a three sided building with entrance into the grounds through Marble Arch. It was Prince Albert who had the present frontage built, creating a courtyard, and the arch was moved to it's present location.
I Googled Scone before I recorded the audio and was presented with 3 different pronunciations, so I just had to pick one. The images I show aren't always meant to be literal representations of what something looked like at a given time. It's actually quite hard and time consuming to find public domain or CC images. I can't always get something that is correct to the exact year.
Wow! I would expect a few hiccups... but all had a year to get this right. It doesn't say much for her household. Probably no one ( or at least a competent person) was in over all charge of the planning to include rehearsals.There should have a few rehearsals to anticipate problem areas and ways to ensure the key players knew what to do. The incorrect size crown and ring is just too wrong. This all seems so bizarre .. surly Victoria was the presumed next ruler... .Or was it really Sexism.?.. Nobody expected much of her...and maybe didn't care enough to get things right.

I'm not sure why it was so badly put together. Just incompetence and over-confidence I think. I've never seen anything to suggest sexism. It wouldn't be a good idea to offend the Queen after all. :-)

Hmm, I dunno. I tend to shy away from the really outrageous conspiracy theories, but on the other hand it might be kind of fun, for something different. I'll think about it. I can certainly tell you that she wasn't a man though.
The idea of a monarchy, passing title to next the family member in line, power based simply on 'right of birth' is actually comical of it's own in modern times. As I understand it, now Great Britain views it's royalty by birth merely ceremonial. In a country straddling the fine line of national poverty it couldn't be any more comical maintaining such a lavish extraordinarily expensive merely ceremonial institution. A hilarious waste of financial resources. Now when you consider the embarrassing antics of a royal family oblivious to the staggering amounts of money they've drained from the pockets of citizens, it beyond comical they are not feeling even the slightest bit of shame. All in all as Monty Python would say 'It's a silly country'.
