    Wow, now I have to watch all your channel content! It's the first time I see a modular synthesizer composer who has a structured process for composing music, precise references, and such a good taste.

    Hello again Hainbach, hope you've been doing great!
    Once again the sounds are beyond amazing on this one. I've been really drooling after a Morphagene ever since I wanted to build a modular myself because I love working with samples. Especially after finding this channel and thoroughly falling in love with tape, it just feels like the tool to use. Samples are that halfway point between electronic and acoustic I love so dearly, the liminality is endlessly intriguing. The way a sample skitters or skips, or how it sound played at varying speeds really bring out something about the sound that is true in a very surreal sense.
    Also I really like the conceptualization of the reel as film noir. I love that atmosphere and mood myself, it can be expressed in so many ways and when it hits that right spot it's incredibly evocative in a relateable way. When I eventually get a Morphagene myself, it would be really interesting to explore these samples as well.
    I have small question though: what's your way of controlling the Morphagene? What kind of CV are you feeding it?

      Thank you very much! I use LFOs on the genes and start points and pressure points/brains to switch between splices.

    Inspiring as usual , I’ve been watching a lot about Morphagene lately , should I or shouldn’t I well thanks I’m convinced its must have . I been working with cassette tape loops for years and, got into modular a couple of years ago and to me this module gives the same sensation I get from tape loops you don’t loose that raw Lofi feel it’s wonderful . Love your work !

    you are the ideal person to do demos ( and I hope you are solicited more and compensated) because your methodology and approach results immersing intriguing and adventures. It is not my intention to fawn or exaggerate my impression of your skill and artistry :) just my nature to share my admiration purely. ( I am whispering: I bought one of your tracks last week)

      Oh thank you! I am glad my enthusiasm translates, I had so much fun with this and got results I enjoyed quickly. Much of my collaboration with AMULETS is based on warping his sounds with the MG, that was a good way to learn what it can do.

    Great sounds, I was hoping for some brass to make more jazz, noir like sounds. Yet I defiantly can hear the Lynch influence. I miss recording to tape, definitely makes your recordings sound richer. Well done!

    Your videos are so refreshing man, I love it. I was wondering, how do you get commissioned by these companies and directors? Like do you have a degree in music, or did you sort of grow your skills organically over time? I watched your video on composing for the theater and thought that looked like a very interesting path, but I have no plans on getting a music degree and don't know how much these industries require that.

    • @Hainbach
      @Hainbach  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hi Chandler, thank you! I have a master in English and Musicology, so not really how to make music, though the background in drama and acoustics helped a lot. I basically taught me everything myself (had piano lessons as a kid though), often diving in headlong. Even writing for orchestra was something I jumped in, though I had help in getting the notation actually layouted. Start was doing a lot of student/off theatre while I was studying and working up with many different directors who were also studying. My advice would be to start early, work basically for free on student projects, hang in the scene and do as much as you can, picking up many skills by the way.

      @StinkysCastle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ayy congrats on the Master's, that's impressive. And that's super sound advice, it's good to know that simply putting in the effort is still a viable route. Thanks!

    For the distortion you’re talking about, are you saying there’s a way to push the reel to clip inside the morphagene? How can I do this? I thought you only had volume control while recording into it. I’m very interested in understanding what you mean. Thanks for another great video!

    • @Hainbach
      @Hainbach  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you make the tape inside the daw and have signals that are hitting 0dB they might distort. Going to -3dB takes care of that. So you can choose to have drive or not. Dunno if possible if not using a DAW.

    When I record from my phone into Morphagene ( even if I press record and tap on Slice) the volume isn’t loud enough. Mother 32 and DFAM at 12 o clock are already louder than Morphagene at full volume. Am I doing something wrong?

    How do you not get the noise from the line out of the Op1 when using the audio gain on the Morphagene?

    • @Hainbach
      @Hainbach  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I recorded the OP1 to the Nagra III, then to the DAW where I assembled the reel. No autogain involved.

    • @deadmidi5684
      @deadmidi5684 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhh that makes sense. Did you use the same technique in your "Tape Techniques 3: Sampling on the Teenage Engineering OP1" video?

    • @Hainbach
      @Hainbach  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, there I played it straight into into the Morphagene. But I remember cranking the internal gain on the sample I played, so it went hot into the MG.

  • @mikenoface

    Hainbach, I've been spending hours on modulargrid trying to figure out a build centered around the morphagene. Do you have a list of the modules you're using there with the pressure points and why you chose those? Or could you recommend one or two modules you would pair with Morphagene if you were just getting started with Eurorack? Many thanks and really enjoying your content.
