      I have 3 kids and had 3 different ways to test DNA. I had amniocentesis, chorionic villus testing and to me the most amazing as I didn’t have a giant needle going into my abdomen, was a blood test, and they could pick my baby’s dna from my blood sample! It was really fascinating to see how testing changed.

    • @ElizabethSchwalie
      @ElizabethSchwalie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ElizabethSchwalie WRONG! They LITERALLY Got my son’s dna from MY BLOOD. I knew he did not have any of the main genetic issues AND that he was a boy XY. This is the newest test. You are confused with the OLDER tests that do not test DNA, and they only give you a percentage of risk. I know this because I was one the first to do the new method of testing mom’s blood and extracting the fetus’s dna that’s free floating in it. You really shouldn’t write about what you do not know!
      In the past, the standard of care for those at risk for having a baby with certain genetic conditions or other complications was one of two genetic screenings performed in the first trimester: chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or an amniocentesis.
      These provide a pretty accurate picture of your baby’s genetic health, but they’re also invasive and carry a risk of miscarriage.
      So, not ideal or worth the risk without other medical reasons… though they do also allow you to find out your baby’s sex before the 20-week ultrasound.
      Now expectant parents have another option.
      About 10 years ago, researchers developed a much less invasive test called cell-free DNA screening. Because your baby’s DNA actually shows up in your blood, it can be used to screen for things like:
      Down syndrome
      Edwards syndrome
      Patau syndrome
      These are three of the most common genetic fetal conditions.
      Cell-free DNA screenings, which reveal the likelihood of your baby having one of these genetic conditions, used to be recommended only to those with high-risk pregnancies. But now they’re now being offered more widely.
      How does this type of screening work?
      Basically, you go to your doctor’s office or local lab and give a sample of your blood. In theory, any genetic abnormalities related to those three chromosomal defects will appear in your baby’s DNA - and, therefore, in your sample.
      You only need to be 9 or 10 weeks pregnant, depending on the specific test used. Several companies provide these NIPTs to practitioners.

      I’m 4’10”, 24 years old. Technically, if my height was caused by one of several medical conditions, I could be considered a dwarf (4’10” is the height cap). As far as I know, tho, I’m just very short as a result of a history of short people marrying short people lol. My grandma is 4’11”, I think her husband was like 5’6”. My mom is 5’1” and my dad is like 5’3”.

    The "technically a dwarf" comes from the law where it states that if you are under 4'10 you are allowed to apply for disability as a dwarf. It doesn't mean that you are one, it means that if you are you can apply for disability. They probably just put 4'10 because they needed to put a cap or something idk.

    • @danielledaley1649
      @danielledaley1649 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Exactly and just because you can apply doesnt mean they will get it. Hell people who actually need have trouble getting it.

      @@danielledaley1649 it’s so sad that people who need it don’t get disability but many people who are simply lazy take advantage of super common injuries and take advantage of the less able simply because they don’t feel like doing as much work

      @@THETORTUREDSTONERSDEPARTMENT13 yes, if you had cancer and are left in a state that makes you physically unable to work you could apply for (and be approved for) disability. You wouldn't apply as having dwarfism though. You'd apply under There are two kinds of disability, long term and short term. Short term would apply to someone who is injured or sick and unable to work for 15 days-6 months. Long term disability would cover when you're going to be unable to work for an indefinite long period of time or permanently. So in that case your scenario would fall under long term since it's likely your condition is not going to improve or get better.
      Also, for the record it is ridiculously difficult to be granted disability in the US. Most people even ones that are legitimately and obviously disabled will more than likely be denied the first time they apply. Most have to hire and pay for a disability lawyer to help them.
