- The brothers Emmanuel playing Mozart's "Rondo Alla Turca" at the Chet Atkins convention in 1999. I also have two other videos of them playing this song on my channel. I don't know if it is the best version, but it always seems to be a crowd favourite when they get together to play.
Two guys tuned together. Phil is amazingly underrated. Tommy is one of the most generous guitar players around.
Always paying my tribute to the Emmanuel brothers. The best guitar players who ever leave. Respect from Portugal! RIP Phil!
And yet another of my guitar heroes joins the great concert in the sky......Thanks for the music Phil RIP.

Saw Phil and Tommy first at the Kirra Beach Hotel in 1986 - it was just an informal jam; mostly they played Shadows songs, oh, and the theme from Countrywide. Got to meet Phil a few times later; I even lent him my '69 Tele once. (He came to my house to pick it up and left two hours later after playing quite a few songs on it). I was a bit isolated overseas when he died and was quite shocked and sad when I found out. RIP Phil; you were a gentleman and a better than great guitarist.
Their is only one thing better than seeing Tommy perform, thats watching Tommy and Phil! Just like the old days.

I think in 99 and 2000 when Phil and Tommy went over to the Chet Atkins Festival in Nashville, the brothers would have 'blown away' the American audience. At this time Phil must have been one of the quickest flat-pickers in the world, and Tommy was just gaining recognition as a great finger -picker guitarist in the style of Chet Atkins. Tommy always said that pubs and clubs are great for putting a meal on the table, but he was aiming at concert venues ultimately. Tommy knew what he wanted. Both brothers started playing together from an early age, gained entertainment experience, and as TRUE musicians - still cannot read music - they play by ear !
Absolutely insane! I love seeing the two of them "testing" each other. And this was 15 years ago!
I have 6 guitars and after dinner today I am going to commence eating them one bite at a time! Should complete the job in early 2018!!

Phil used to introduce Tommy as "the best rhythm guitarist in the world". Of course it was partly a joke because they always used to rib each other mercilessly on stage and Phil knew damn well his brother wasn't just the best on rhythm. But he really is the best rhythm guitarist in the world. The precision and speed of his rhythm playing is out of this world.
... and he billed himself as "the guy who taught Tommy Emmanuel how to play"... lol. A great but humble guy with a great sense of humour... and he loved Droopy Dog cartoons.
I used to see them for free every Wednesday night at the Palm Beach hotel in 1986 or 87, happy days

I've had the fortune of attending three of Tommy's master classes. These two guys are truly exceptional. Where they get the hand strength and coordination I'll never know.
Learning to play the guitar at 4 years old might have a little to do with that hand strength and coordination.

We hear a lot more about Tommy these days, but Phil is on a par musically, although he has a much lower profile, as always.
Both brilliant musos and nice people as well.
I think thats because Phil has mostly worked with bands, and Tommys worked hard to have a solo career, which would have taken a massive amount of perseverance to achieve success.

The only 2 things that I have in common with the Emmanuel brothers is that I happen to own the same guitar strap and play guitar. The similarities stop there (I have tried this piece before.....didn't end well)

Their Father was a traveling guitarist and the boys busked/played on the street with their Dad since the ages of 4-5? Can't beat that sort of training. Phenomenal players both.

Mozart was writing pieces before the age of 5. Historically, he stands alone in his greatness. Tommy is not too far back though.
