My first VCR was a 2nd generation Sony Beta (1977-$1200) still got it and it works. Recorded Space Shuttle flights from TV networks and later Nasa satellite TV. Later got a 2nd Beta (1985-$600) but it was a Super Beta. Switch over to JVC Super VHS in 1988-$1000. Brought 2 other JVC SVHS over the coming years, used that format till DVDs came out. Still have 4 Beta, 3 JVC SVHS, and 4 JVC +R DVD machine working to play to tapes. (I am the only one in the area with a 10ft dish still working.) By the way, I was not RICH, I was FRUGAL!!!!!
We got our first VCR around 1988. It was a Goldstar made 1987. My mom purchased it from Publishing Clearing House. When I first saw it, it didn’t know what it was because I was only 2. I do remember pushing random buttons on it. Lol. During it’s heyday it, I think it was a good format. However, when making recording off the cable, the quality varies. Setting the speed to SP makes a difference, but I always had it set to EP in order to fit more on the tape. LOL. I always thought the HiFi VCRs from the 80s looked awesome with the level meters. Lol
Yeah, I always recorded in EP (or SLP) back in the day to fit more onto the tape. But now I regret that. I have so much cool footage from the 80s, but the quality is so bad. It would look so much nicer if I had recorded it in SP! :)

I also remember the feeling I experienced when I bought my first Walkman way back in 1981. I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Fast forward to 2023, and now this stuff is so much dead tech. We have been spoiled by 4K, endless video streaming, and Apple Music. Sic transit g;oria mundi!
