    Reminds me of Sting talking about singing and playing bass at the same time, he's in total control of harmony of the song. Solid advice Jayme!

    Straight wisdom. You can have all the chops in the world, and if you've never thought about COMPOSITION and how the pieces go together this way, you wouldn't be a great player.

    Don't beat yourself up... you're a great player, and that's great advice. In retrospect, I've done this without thinking about it, then wondered why I liked that bassline better than some others. Sometimes genius involves pointing out something that seems obvious in hindsight to others. Thanks... you've helped me understand my playing better! Brilliant!

    This took a while to sink in but it actually dawned on me one day when I was recording with my band. As a younger player, I was playing all over the place, and when we listened to it, it was obvious to everyone that I was overplaying. Then, I decided to only do licks when the singer wasn't singing or when the guitarist wasn't doing lead runs. I think I grew up a little that day.

    That is some great advice. I'm a self taught bass player of 5 years. That advice is so simple and effective I can't see how I missed that logically.

    I was fortunate to be an unschooled (had a good ear) bass player who ended up in working bands. My schooling was essentially duplicating what the masters did. When you revealed the specifics of this secret weapon, my reaction was, "Well, of course!" Instinctively, I wouldn't crowd a vocal line. I just knew it was out of place. I would only ad fills when it seemed to make sense, to fill a void, to add spice, to set up what is to come. These are all the terms I would have used if asked about it, while not realizing I was discussing theory.

    • @deadbeatstudios
      @deadbeatstudios  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I notice that in a lot of the music I listen to where there are breaks or pauses in the song the bass player does his runs or licks and it comes out smooth. I try to add that to my arsenal. I know what you're talking about and even the greatest bassists have to do the same thing.

    • @deadbeatstudios

    5:06 DONT EMBELLISH OVER THE VOCAL, FILL IN THE SPACE IF AT ALL. Also don't piss in the sink, don't eat live chicken, don't drive a tractor indoors and don't lead someone on with the promise of a secret and then talk about the promise but without saying what it is and then after 5 minutes, reveal that the secret is that,
    "secrets are interesting."

    After years of playing your advice is kinda obvious to me, but for a long time it wasn't. I had the privilege of recording an album with a very famous English rock musician some years ago, the producer on that session said to me exactly what you're saying here, and previously I had never even given it any consideration. Good advice.

      Anything he's written :) Counterpoint is a defining compositional device for that time period (Baroque era 1600-1750) so you can hear it in literally any piece that was written during that time. But for sure check out his Well Tempered Clavier - he literally wrote the book on counterpoint. Inside the WTC you'll see the Inventions and Fugues that I'm referring to. Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd love to help!

    I was just thinking about that yesterday. To do the more difficult stuf in between singing. I am switching from guitar to bass but i am also the singer in the band. I am a better bass player and my friend is better at guitar especially solo's. I find it so hard to sing as i play bass but i also don't want to play just the root to make it easy to sing. I actually forgot that i was thinking that, your video reminds me of it. I going to practice this. Thanks. Great video.

    I'm new... like just a year now. I don't read music, I use tabs to learn. I find myself on certain songs, dropping or adding notes. I know I'm just learning, but some of the songs seem to have notes that I think are wasted.. it's 2 or 3 more than needed for a smooth transition in chords. My instructor teased me, "Oh, I see what you've done here." I guess what I'm asking is, is improve on a well known establish song a bad thing?

  • @crocholiday
    @crocholiday 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Truth! I'm not a bitchin' technical player. I have good chops but I'm not dropping jaws with my technical skills (not my job really and never really cared to). But... I get a lot of compliments on my playing. Mostly because I'm solid, I know where the pocket is and I know to shine in the spaces between. My point... you don't have to have the best chops to be a killer bass player.

There's still studios and people who work "full time," but that number is much lower than it used to be. And "full time" is more like "sometimes" nowadays haha. But ultimately it's just networking, taking all the work you can get, and doing lots of favors. Hope that helps!

    Play for the music, not your ego. The more players you add, the less each player plays. Just know when to come in, and when to lay back.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stash...you are saying the same exact thing Jayme is saying. He is not using his ego, this advise is more for beginners and pros that has a big ego. I'm a professional percusion player for over 40 years and this advise is a "MUST" for every existing musician. For me, the only instrument that can make any lick when the singer is voicing, is the piano, period. Jayme isn't talking about ego. This guy is a very humble musician and a great teacher. If you understand this is not a great advise for you, why bother with ur comment?

    Dude, you are a great bass player, watched enough of your videos to hear your tasteful tone and playing. But being humble is also key to greatness. Thanks for your output, I am enjoying it a lot!

    Sounds like this guy is concentrating too much on hip bass playing and not enough on worship.

      Jayme - I appreciate the explanation before the musical demo. I admit that I was anxious to get to the music, but I realize the value of learning the CONCEPTS behind what you do.
      As a result of taking the time to listen, and comprehend the musical concepts that you explained, I have already begun to utilize them with other songs that I play with my worship team.
      Thanks! Peace and blessings!
