    Lived in Leipheim 75-78. Went to Neu-Ulm Junior High '77-78. We used to go to the Shoppette to buy our lunch and eat in the park across the street. When did the school become a High School?In my day, everyone went to High School in Augsburg. Played little league in Neu-Ulm for two years. This video explains why it was so hard to identfiy much of anything at Wiley Barracks on Goggle Maps: So much has changed! Thanks for letting my visit the area through your video!

    wow, the last couple mins were very familiar. Lived there from 86 to 90. You almost drove by where I lived, it was like 2 buildings down from where you turned down the old upper O-grade housing. I remember that big hill with the sketchy slide on top of it by the old YMCA that you drove by. played coach pitch baseball behind that yellow apartment complex by the upper O-grade housing. So many memories.

    I was an MP there from Feb 83 to Aug 84. Loved that town! Remember seeing our Mopeds in the Summer? Corny looking but sure beat a hot van with no AC. You may also remember the 4000 no-nukes protesters every Easter at Wiley gate. The bowling alley across from Wiley had the best Jaeger Schnitzel! I visited there in 92 and it was still a sad abandoned wreck full of immigrant squatters. Neu Ulm looked like a ghost town without the Army economy. I wonder when it turned around? Crazy now!

    What an experience seeing the old Wiley. I was in C btry 1/81st there from '76-'78. I have many photos and memories, and a patch from the Ulm Rod and Gun Club in the old pow bunkers on post. If I were to go see it all today I would probably just be a teary eyed mess for a while, before I got down to the business of reconnecting with the past and a bier or zwei.

    I grew up there, riding my bike to school, passing some of you guys (maybe not you personally, you know what I mean though) on your morning excercise. I remember someone jumping on the back of my bike, hitching a ride for a few meters. Must have been in '88 or '89. I also remember a classmate's mom worked "inside" and she took us to Burger King (was it? or McDonalds? Can't quite remember) after swimming lessons. Classmates name is Michael Snook. I also remember vividly the "open days" when we could go in for the fun-fair.

    I was in Service Battery 79-81 and seeing the snow reminded me of the two times I did battalion sergeant of the guard on Christmas Day, first time my name got white-out in and the next year I asked for the duty so a married man would be home with his family. It was actually a good duty to have since you wasn't going anywhere and never had any trouble with the troops because they were all burned out by time I took over the duty on Christmas morning. Good memories.

    I was in C Battery 1st/81st from June 68 (pre-Wiley) until Jan. 71. I returned to visit the Ulm Christmas market in Dec 2007, and we had a hard time finding Wiley due to the new train tracks and train station and general expansion in New-Ulm. When we finally found it, the old buildings were all gone except for the church, EM club, and guard shack. This video looks like a lot of construction happened very shortly after my visit. My wife enjoyed Ulm better that most of our other destinations.

      I remember those kinds of incidents w/ carbon monoxide poisoning every now & then, I was HHB 3/33 F.A. 1977- 80 Radar section, my Radar equipment was so Old because it used Vacuum tubes 😅😂 a few times when arriving @ Grafenwöhr for reforger/ field problems FTX's field duty, we'd set up operations but couldn't operate because of a vacuum tube issue, our warrant officer had to go all around Graff & look for a certain vacuum tube, from all the other Radar sites there at the time so we would all just chill out and drink some brews 🍻🍷 fun times !

    Update from my comment 2 years ago -- I took my daughter to Germany in May 2012 and once again drove through the former Nelson and Wiley. Last time was 1992 which looked like a ghost town but now thriving again. I was told by a German relative that Germany made out well on the Euro conversion which fueled a manufacturing expansion. Almost no traces left of the former Nelson & Wiley now with thriving industrial and residential additions (and no East German squatters like in 1992)

    • @klausdiehard
      @klausdiehard 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the reason why it looked like a ghost town was the unclear ownership status. Germany owned the place when the Us Army left and Neu-Ulm bought it in 93-94.

    • @matthiasburger2315
      @matthiasburger2315 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's the story from a different angle: We were schoolboys in 1990, when we first came into Wiley - there was a sale of old army stuff; I still have two not exactly matching rubberboots from then. Next time was 1992 after the place was given to the Bundesvermögensamt. That was the "ghost-town"-time. Nice tours around the place by night - sadly there soon was much damage done by some idiots. The first two objects that were put into use again apart from the houses in the Vorfeld were the Dietrich Theater as a cinema (I remember the first shows with about 10 people in the big hall) and the "bunker" as an unusual bar.

    I remember, the streets and buildings in spite of the changes. I like the changes that have been instituted now that we are no longer there. The entire greater Neu Ulm community had been our playground. I have been back I stayed there for one week during my two vacation in Germany. I was the Service Battery Orderly Room Clerk from 1972-1974. I was a 15E and was originally assigned to Ammo Platoon, but because I had such great clerical skills, the Army made use of them in the Orderly Room. Major Carrier had just left when I arrived, Major Zebell took over from him and my final months we had Captain Larry E. Jarvis from Sac City, Iowa. He could be hard on you, but he was a kind man underneath. Both Zebell and Jarvis invited the Orderly Room guys over for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Very memorable days for this once young man. Thanks again for the video update.

    • @RealFudd
      @RealFudd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Major Jarvis was head of the missile school at Redstone Arsenal, AL I was attending when I was going through to be a 21L in 1977 and I stayed on as permanent party until June of 1979 and he was still there. I thought he was a real character and liked him but I didn't worked for him while stationed on Redstone but I saw him most every day. He would come though where I worked and always stopped by to say hello and to see what was going on and just shoot the breeze for a few minutes.

    • @j.ericswede7084
      @j.ericswede7084 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember correctly, and I have a pretty good memory, Jarvis was an enlisted man that went OCS and originally was stationed in Service Battery as the Battalion Maintenance Head. He was the only Officer I served with who would regularly enter the Orderly Room with grease all over his pants and back as he would gladly get under trucks to help install MWO's on equipment. He could get in your face on occasion, as he did with me one time, but in the end he wrote me a fine letter of recommendation when I left the Service in 1974. I always appreciated that from Captain/Major Jarvis. And his wife was a very sweet woman. For Christmas one year, Jarvis had bought his son a "Rock-Em, Sock-Em" toy and he got right down on the floor with his son, in the presence of all of us, and boxed with his son and his new toy. I have nothing but fond memories of my service in Neu Ulm. I gained 15 pounds eating those good German meals at the Posthorn. The world was so different then.

    • @RealFudd
      @RealFudd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I saw him in his khakis climb under a truck more than once at the school and the old timers said that's just the way he is. But what was funny one time I remember was the way he took of his hat and gently sat it down on top of some papers before he crawled under the deuce and a half and to do grease work like a regular soldier and you had to respect any man who would do that and I never felt he did it for show or to make points with the enlisted.

    • @j.ericswede7084
      @j.ericswede7084 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, he was a blue collar Commander if there ever was one. I think he did it because he loved it and he knew that by doing it he endeared himself to his troops.
