The 1990 Republic of Ireland side with Roy Keane and Paul McGrath was no joke. For Netherlands to finish equal to them on points, was not a disgrace. I completely agree that the Dutch are the greatest footballing nation never to have won a WC - and that the 1974 squad was one of the best ever, full stop. There are, however, some honorable mentions. Denmark, 1986. That team was incredible. They went through the group stage like a juggernaut, playing some terrifying football along the way. Unfortunately, illness ravaged the team in the knockout stages. Playing unfit players, they lost to Spain 5-1. On equal terms, that score might have been reversed. Nigeria, 1994. Frightening squad. Absolutely terrifying. Great pace, powerful, brilliant passing, excellent in defense. Lost in knockouts (either to Italy or Argentina - memory fails me) in a match in which they were clearly the superior side. Nigerians still remember that team with mixed emotions - pride and joy for how brilliant they were, and sadness for not reaching further. 1998 Croatia (actually, multiple years). That squad was particularly remarkable, given that the country had been at war for the better part of a decade. I have always been a fan of the way they play.
