  • Time to build and test the Bell Siphon. In this video I make a bell siphon with 2" bell and 1/2" stand pipe. This design is an exterior siphon so that the inside of the bucket is free.

    You can add a small air tube near the bottom of the bucket just above drain tube and connect it to the bell near the top and that will break the water lock and allow air to break the syphon.

    nice work! Eventually I want to put a bell siphon on my overhead reservoirs from the ram pump for running my overhead irrigation... so it will empty the reservoir... refill and start up irrigation again when full. Glad to see yours worked out. :cheer:

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +The Farmacy Seeds Network that is a really great idea. Especially in a hot climate you could adjust the tank input so that it Waters by siphon every morning.

    • @TheFarmacySeedsNetwork
      @TheFarmacySeedsNetwork 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yep... or in my "acreage" case... so it cycles a few times on a plot (via overhead) and then switch to a new spot...
      it's a pain to have to remember to shut off and wait for refill. :)
      but, 6 new food grade barrels here today for reservoir... so maybe it wont be such an issue for me now.. :)

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      6 new barrels! Are they 55 gal each? Lots of water. I need to find a way to incorporate the auto siphon for irrigation. Like if we go on vacation.... hmmm.

    • @TheFarmacySeedsNetwork
      @TheFarmacySeedsNetwork 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep... 55 ea. I will think on this...
      off the top of my head:
      a valve activated once daily by regulating how much water it takes to fill it... regulated with a valve... weight drops it open... stays open by water flow until reservoirs is empty.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +The Farmacy Seeds Network seems like a good plan. Because you have so much land to water you might not mind if it all dumped at once. Those of us with small gardens would soon have a flood if it dumped several hundred gallons twice a day

    I liked the whole setup... even with the cup at the bottom... I see why you couldn't break your siphon... you need to add a tee horizontally facing upward off of the smaller tank line... then, to that add a snorkel line... a pipe going up, over, and back down to the level where you'd like the siphon to break inside of the tank (usually 1-2 inches from the bottom of the tank)... then, there's where you'd add your external bell siphon to the other end of the tee... I'd really like to see you revisit it... you did a good job, and it urked my nerves to see you cut off the bottom cup...

    I love the idea of an external bell siphon, however some of the parts are very difficult to obtain, especially the reducers, here in South Africa. (Enter the 3d printer....) It make so much more sense to have the bell outside. Thanks also for the idea of using a ram pump. I don't have access to a running stream but you triggered an idea to use a small 12v solar pump (or even more than one) in my sump tank to drive the ram pump and get the water back to the higher level fish dam instead of using an expensive, huge pump in the system. I will test that in the next few weeks.

      I am happy to hear that the video sparked your creativity! An outside siphon is really handy to have.

    Hi Seth. Do you think I could put a valve on the outlet drain of the bell siphon, shut it off when the siphon starts to work and then turn it on when ever i need water again? I am trying to figure out a way to get water from any underground rainwater collection tank without using an electric pump. Thanks in advance and great video.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can do that. As long as there is water in the outlet pipe you can use the siphon downhill and it will start automatically.

  • @Cavalier_Steve
    @Cavalier_Steve 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Seth did you know that the bell siphon will still work without cementing all those bits together then you can clean the siphon out should you get debris inside. Good video. Steve.

      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steven Watson haha yes when I glued the cap on I realized I shouldn't have done that. Would definitely make things a lot easier to clean out. :)

    Hi there, I've got a siphon design that I've been using 24 hours a day for the last 6 months and it hasn't skipped a beat. There's no bell needed, it's external, and mounts to the side of the bucket as opposed to through the bottom. If you're interested lets chat about it. I believe it will address the flow, clogging and reliability issues for draining your duck pond.

    You got a "low flow" start on the siphon (that's good) but what is the max flow coming from the pump (the supply line) you can have and still get a break in the siphon? You didn't elaborate on that part of the system. Thanks for showing us your experiments.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not worked with this idea in some time. I am not sure about that info. (I am bad for trying something and then moving on the other things. ) Breaking the flow is a real issue.

    Rather than a union simply seal the seam between the cap an the pipe with a bead of hot glue. It will break when you twist the cap to remove it.

  • @wilsonsupertramp4968
    @wilsonsupertramp4968 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    would a ball tap between the bucket and the siphon work? that way you could turn on the tap to use the siphon and turn it off to break the seal?

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That probably would work. If you left some suction in the pipe going down you could start back to psiphon anytime you wanted.

      What's the point of controlling the siphon ops when automatic mode is always required?.... Would be equivalent to adding legs onto a snake!!!!

    hi seth! i dnt know if its right to place this comment here..but can I ask a request..can u also try to do a demo of how thermosiphon works..I am planning to build a sloar water heater but could not really understand how it works..thanks..

  • @JaimeHWeb

    Could you think of a design in which the water passes first by the generator and then by the ram pump?

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue I am thinking of is that the generator would interfere with the pressure wave of the ram pump.

    • @JaimeHWeb
      @JaimeHWeb 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your answer. With sufficient flow, a minimum incline of 30 degrees and a suggested distance of six meters from the generator should work. There is the question.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now if you have that head pressure after the generator it might be just fine. My thought is if the water that is coming out of the generator falls into a catchment tank then the ram pump pulls from that it would allow the pressure wave to work without issues.

    I would only have drilled one of the extra holes after your first try. When you went on to cut off the cup, and stick on some other pieces... Maybe not put that last long pipe on there, and instead just turn the 45 at the end, upward?

  • @crapsterface
    @crapsterface 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    the cup system needs a drain hole in the cup according to below where the drain pipe stops, but a small hole if its too big it counter acts.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Master Caster it seems like anything to do with a cup is going to be tedious. My brother-in-law built one of these and I remember him saying you had to be very careful how you put the drain holes in.

    • @crapsterface
      @crapsterface 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well All this stuff is tedious and timing lol. It will take a bit of playing with, also thogh A drill hole in the cup, You saw myn work, Only one though and you mioght have to experiment with the size of the hole according to the drain pipes / siphon speed, Oh ya It can be tought to figure out. But is rewarding whaen you get it.. the reason for the drill hole in the cup is so it driains, when it syphons ( takes two or three, third or fourth over powers it ) Or longer ypou need to let it be for a few hours sometimes it will tune itself, then dont touch it lol. what I did was the drill hole to drain it so it goes below the drain pipe and when it siphons fast enough, It presurizes the stand pipe and that burps it. I dont have the cup perfectly draining, but it drains below the drainpipe. and thats all thats nessesary as long as some of the siphons overpower the flow of the cup draining. haha I know Its hard to explain, especiallly is hard to explain I had a couple drinks hahalook at my vid thogh youll see what I mean, that drain cup is so the cup drains enough that when siphon takes place it pushes air up as it rises, creating the bubbles you want.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because I am a noob when it comes to the bell siphon I think I will stick to the longer pipe on the tail end. I was trying to recreate my brother in laws system from a few years ago. he had a cup like that but it was better balanced. here is that video: th-cam.com/video/ccCTDrE_3eY/w-d-xo.html

      I would have done a smalll hole in the 1/2" cap under the cup. That would have been an effective way to stop the siphon. Once it gets to a low level in the tank flow slows the small hole in the cap would have lowered the water level in the pipe and the cup.

    A simpler design would work and flush the debris. stick your 1/2 inch pipe up the bucket, drop a capped 2" over that with notches all around the bottom. done.

    how about a threaded "cleanout" instead of a glued cap.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Matthew Jenne as long as it's airtight I think it would work just fine. I was thinking a union that could be unscrewed quickly in the middle of the pipe would also work.

    • @cfisupply

      True. Either one I think would work. Could always Teflon the threads if there was a problem. IDK... just throwing in my $0.02.

    Not trying to offend anyone..... if you and many other people involved in these bell siphons were meant for aquaponic farming purposes, do you really need to go thru all these troubles and costs in order to get the job done? My view is that juz a simple siphon made of a measured length (for height adjustment) of rubberized water hose already can do the job nicely...

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's all good. I am not an aquaponics farmer. I am just a guy with some water and pvc Learning something new. I dont really have a use for this but a lot of people do! If my video gets people thinking about things my job is done. If you watch this and think that garden hose is best than mission accomplished. :)

      Why combine a ram pump with a generator? Each thing that you add loses energy and increases maintenance. Why not just generate at source and transfer the electricity using wires?

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is what my experiment showed. It is better to let water fall in the pen-stock to the motor and not have a ram pump.
