  • Curious about foil designs? Want to know how different the IMOCA 60s are? This is the video for you!
    With five IMOCA 60's moored in Alicante for The Ocean Race Europe, we jumped in a boat and went to do some close-up examination and comparisons.

    Nice look at the different foil shapes, center outriggers, sterns, and hull configuration on the IMOCA 60s. The calculations on what little tweaks the designers can accomplish to gain either more speed or enable a more stable platform in order to generate more speed must be daunting but a little easier as new designs incorporate real time knowledge gained which either confirm or might question computer performance calculation modelling in various wind strength and sea state conditions. Appreciate the host commentator's observations on how the older boats are plenty competitive with the newer ones. Though the higher knot speeds reward a fractional adjustment more quickly, the overall optimum sailing skill of the skipper and crew seems to level the playing field so the technical advantage will not alone so easily determine the winner. Really appreciate how all the little details even such as which boat has a brand new inventory of sails just for this race are included. Looking forward to the last leg.

    Would be very interesting to hear some technical explanations for the different foil shapes. The ones on Bureau Vallée look like they would be very effective at low heel angles and keeping part of the foil above the surface, but the foil width of the outboard curved section seems a bit wide? Thought they would be thinner there, as they would be immersed at greater speed/more heel, and also producing more lift for a given area.

      The race does a podcast as well, and coming soon there will be a chance to hear from Juan K, the designer of Corum and he does a good job of squashing years of knowledge and experimentation into a quick chat about foil shapes. It will be coming out in a few weeks. If you can't wait that long, it's a balance between the foil pushing you sideways (to fight leeway) and upwards (to right / lift the boat). Too much of one means not enough of the other. Then you have to build that into a shape that you can make strong enough to withstand the very worst of the oceans.

      Also the foils generate far more righting moment than the rigs can tolerate, so basically if you do it wrong the whole rig will blow away before the boat heals over. Particularly on bureau valee, my guess is that it's because it was made for an experienced multihull sailor, who should be used to having to manage te forces.

    The longitudinal blades on the outboard foils are vortex generators. They turn relatively-unproductive lateral flow into small vortices that help the lifting-surface (top, in this case) of the foil have the flow retain adhesion and thus continue to provide lift.
    Boundary layer energization aids adhesion of the dynamic fluid (air or gas) flow to the desired surface, and reduces the size of the relatively unproductive boundary layer. You will thus rarely if ever see vortex generators on the high-pressure side of a plane (or boat) wing (bottom). Adhesion is not a major issue there.
    As F1 teams discovered decades after the delta-wing fighter jets were using it, vortex lift is a real thing, and those spinning vortices are lower in pressure than just plain, low-energy flow.

    Saw America's Cup.. Nice but don't know really what is that.. A plane or something.. What will be in five years? Drones or something..? Foils in Imoca is the tech now to increase speed.. No problem about that.. Maybe the cruise boats in the future will find something to approach.. The best one is Swan but got no budget.. Lol.. Seriously now: The first boat with this kind of stuff was Eric Tabarly boat "Paul Ricard"..Design by him In 1978..He was a true visionary ...!!! And the book pictures.. No tech, boots, the old yellow fishing suits.. Etc.. The first Atlantic ocean record... Saw this nowadays, comparing with the first boats I sail and the few mags I bought, when was a teen, in late seventies, and trough this decades getting actuallyzed with everything... The last year's the advances were fast..! Remember 1984 America Cup, with Australia II... The "foils" on the keel.. An inverted Y... Super Secret and all that..! Keep it going 👍

    • @maxhugen
      @maxhugen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      FYI..the fences are to reduce ventilation... air being sucked down the foil and reducing lift. Cavitation is when the low pressure on top of the foil falls below water vapour pressure, and the water effectively "boils", again reducing lift.

    You can’t bet all your money on those foils, if you watched the Vendee Globe , foiling boats are slightly more delicate than dagger board boats, especially in the Southern Ocean.
    If Pip Hare had a foiler she likely wouldn’t have completed the race but as it was, she overcame many breakages that did stop newer boats with complex foils and keel canting systems.

    • @niallmyant-best8923
      @niallmyant-best8923 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good point - but worth mentioning that Pip has taken ownership of the old version of Bureau Valley which is a foiler. She's currently racing on board the new Bureau Valley to learn how to race with foils in this event. Looking forward to talking to her afterwards to get her thoughts. So far she has said 'These boats are a beast', sounding like she meant it in a good way.

    It's nice and all but totally impractical, they need to stick with developing better and better mono hulls. You'd need a 30 foot wide slip at your marina and it's just a matter of time before the foil gets run over at anchor. I'd prefer them developing boats that people can use. Who wants a boat you can't sail alone.
