Pretty much every sampler had a version of the Marcato Strings. The Emulator II version only took up 538kB of memory and yet those strings appeared on countless records and soundtracks. I liked them best on 'West End Girls' and 'Papa Don't Preach'. I have no idea whether Koji Kondo used the Emulator II, or something from the Roland S-series, or another sampler entirely, but those tiny lofi string samples changed the world.
@@redeemer665 Kurzweil strings are over a lot of stuff. The go-to for film soundtracks. The original k250 piano strings, orchestral stuff kept going in the k2k series right up today because the original samples were recorded so well. Original would have been 16bit pcm, compressed and companded in the k250.
Koji Kondo, one of the chief composers at Nintendo, was a Roland S-550 user and a fan of Roland gear in general. So there's a good chance that steel drum sound was resampled by him for use on Mario 64 and other games of the era
I totally forgot the display port on these was compatible w/ the Atari ST RGB monitors...until now. Though it looks more Atari 8-bit due to the 40-column white text on blue background!
So are you using the analog TVF filters here or is this the RAW samples which will playback on the S-50 ? BTW i have seen lot of your videos and they are inspiring...... i was active in early 1990:s the Swedish Italo Era.......
@@MeneTekelUpharsin It was 220USD from Japan plus around 100USD import dees and tax . This all end up as bad idea because it's complicated to modify it to EU 230V mains voltage. I should pay 400-500EUR for EU model. Cheers! S
It comes with an analog mouse with analog fluff on the analog rollerball. The waveforms on the floppy discs, however, are about as analog as the pixels on this screen.

The fairlight vox is on the air disk, wouldn't be surprised if there were more fairlight sounds in this library

I still love mine.
I had a girlfriend that threw mine out along with an mt-32 not really knowing what she did. That sampler had a really interesting sound.
I'm sure she's now your ex...
Which probably explains those lucky people who say they found nice synths in the skip or at a charity shop for peanuts.

I just bought S-550 form ebay. Waiting for it to arrive from Japan. Sold mine in early 90ties and bought Akai S1000.

You can load S-50/S-550 disks on the W-30, but not viceversa.

They are from the stock Roland RSB-550 factory library
Are these recorded via mic or line input?
what type of monitor does the s550 require.. is it any composite CGA/EGA RGB monitor? does it connect via Coaxial RCA composite?
Chris Nova777 mine has an OLD monochrome Apple monitor with it.
RGB-HV will do. it has separate composite but no color by that means.
I can't play my S-550 with volume set to the highest (like on your video) or the audio output is all distorted. No one ever had this problem before?

Plenty of analog here! Sampling an analog synth adds a digital layer, but it's still the analog sound.
