So true… When we moved to Arizona in July from Michigan, I was at first in color and temperature shock at how beige it was and how hot. I began signing up for guided hikes in the wild areas and grew to appreciate and love the high desert for its own beauty. Wanting to garden for as much of the year as possible though, landed us eventually in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia, which we love. If you look for it, there are things to love about every place you find yourself. We were military for 28 years. Remember, no matter how bad, it can always be worse, and as with everything, it is all a matter of perspective. A thankful heart is a joyful heart.

I came to Michigan in 1980. Around the same age as you. 💁🏼‍♀️ I had the same EXACT feelings you had. I thought we moved into a hick town. Nothing around here. No great shopping eating etc. But after I married & started to see the state more. I’ve grown to love Michigan. Love our Blue Water Area. I live 3 minutes from the St. Clair River. 10 minutes from Lake Huron. Best part is Jesus in my heart. ☺️

I am like you. I grew up in Tennessee and very seldom seen real snowfalls. Moved to Canada 24 years ago and the first snow was like ...hmmm maybe not what I was prepared for...haha But we have the most beautiful summers here and beautifully green . The growing times are definitely shorter and at times challenging but so worth it! We are zone 3a here where I live.

I couldn’t agree more! I was born in Michigan but grew up on AZ and lived in Cali for 15 years. There is no such thing as a perfect place to live. I truly believe if your mindset is of gratitude and contentment them the spaces around you reflect that. I love having all 4 seasons and I deal with seasonal depression through the winter. Changing my mind set, and taking care of myself mentally and physically made a huge difference! I’m grateful to live in Michigan! And Thankyou for doing this channel I love learning about growing and preserving your own food! It’s so gratifying 🤍🪴🤍

Hi Rachel and Todd. It looks so beautiful in Michigan Rachel. I wish I could go there and have fun as well. But I know what you mean. I live in the Bronx, NY area, and I did not like it at all. When I lived in Manhattan, it was once a beautiful community. I love to go to Central Park and smell the flowers. Sit under a tree and meditate. The grass is green in Central Park. Love you both. God Bless you Rachel and Todd. Take care both of you. Maria.💁🖐️💁🖐️💁🖐️🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏⛅⛅⛅🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

My husband and I want to travel in an RV after he retires for a couple of years and visiting all the northern states that we have never been to is on our wish list. We’re from Texas and I’m always wishing I could be up in the cooler states during the summer where everything is lush and green. Hope to get up there to visit sometime. Oh and do wear life jackets when you are in your boat. You never can tell what might happen.

My heart goes out to those whose time was made harder by "leaders". We need to remind our youth of the Bill of Rights amended to our Constitution in 1791. We have inalienable rights, we have the right to disassociate from the government that no longer represents us. There's a multi-generational effort to dismantle the freedom & education we have come to take for granted instead of appreciate. In 1973 civics was no longer mandatory in public education. WHY? Wouldn't the strength of a nation, a culture and its people, be ROOTED in understanding WHY we are who we are and why we have individual human rights outlined in our laws? We have been made ignorant and complacent on purpose and we need to stand up and reject insanity. Be sovereign in ur words and deeds. Its hard today, as we are being threatened with punishment for small infractions. It is necessary to still insist ur human rights are protected and only you will protect you at the end of the day, when others want u masked, u seek fresh air, freedom of assembly, speech, right to worship, celebrate or mourn, and ur right to pursue happiness, without threat of a tyrannical government oppressing ur ambitions. Civil disobedience preserves freedom and it can be done without physical destruction of any type. Its a desire to live freely and you WILL do so because it IS UR RIGHT. NO ONE SHOULD TAKE THAT AWAY WITHOUT A FIGHT IN OUR OWN DEFENSE. The fact they threatened to take away freedom is irrelevant. If u submit to the threat THAT'S heinous. DO NOT COMPLY WITH WHAT IS MOST UNNATURAL. No one has the "right" to force u into anything, that is a "fight provoking" sort of situation. My prayer for us all, is to overcome this attempt by others, to usurp control. Rebel News Canada and Rebel News Australia have stories and situations that are way worse than what we've had here thus far. Our riots had terrible community damage, but anyone anywhere in those nations are being dragged from homes if they disobey covid restrictions. Its insane and we need to understand civilians globally are NOT alone in having our rights removed by leaders with very strange "problem solving" strategies in mind.

Oh, I’m so happy about your getting a boat! That’s awesome!!! Now you can go out and get your own Walleye. And, most likely quite a few other kinds of fish. When you do, freeze the parts of the fish you don’t use, and put them in your tomato plants next year. Hollis, of Hollis and Nancy’s Homestead, goes fishing just for that purpose. Their vegetables grow to be huge. All they do is drop one or two of those little fish they caught into the hole, and then cover with a layer of dirt. Then, they put in the plant. It’s unbelievable.
One last thought: Please wear a life jacket. You never know when something unexpected happens and you’re in the water!
    Really enjoy your channel! ♥️❣️🙏🏼❣️♥️

What a wonderful video. So 60/70's, love the music. I am loving the new boat, lots of good times for sure to look forward to. Loved your story, glad Michigan grew on ya. I feel the same about Kentucky. I was born and raised in New Jersey but left in 89 and lived 12 yrs in Florida and hated it there. Moved to Kentucky in 2002 and consider this home. There's lots to do and its a gorgeous State. Has 4 seasons but they are mild. No better place in my opinion. I enjoy fishing on Kentucky Land between the Lakes.

I’ve lived in Flint, MI all my life, and still do. I’ve always had a negative outlook on Michigan as a whole just bc of the obvious tribulations of the city. But the last couple of years I’ve changed my perspective and recently made it my mission to highlight the beauty here through my YT videos. This summer I plan to explore more than my surrounding areas. Because truthfully, I haven’t even seen all 5 Great Lakes or any of our major nature parks/reserves 😶
In the future I hope to help add more natural landscaping, and beauty into the communities so everyone can learn to appreciate and love being a Michigander 💙✋🏽

This was a pleasure to listen to. I was raised in MI and moved to TX to be with my now hubby. I didn't love Texas to begin with. It was overwhelming to say the least. After a bit I found places, people, and things that love about Texas. It become my home. Now that we are back here in MI, my hubby is the one who has had to adapt. He doesn't 100% love it, but that is because as a proud native Texas, nothing will ever be better than Texas. hahaha As we explore more of MI he has learned to appreciate the beauty of our state. Home is where you make it. I know I had an unexpected hard time moving back to MI. It was this weird feeling of knowing I was 'home' but I didn't feel at home anymore. But once I got up north and my hubby got to experience up north for the first time... he was like, ok, I can do this. For now. LOL
Congrats on your boat! It will be fun for some new adventures! :D

There is a book called Paddle to the Sea by Holling C. Holling all about the Great Lakes. I read it this year with my middle child who drew a map of Paddle’s journey and learned about the rivers and lakes. You would probably love it for the nature illustrations and detail. We are a few hours south, in central Ohio.
Sometimes the days are long with small kids, a big place to care for, and so many outside responsibilities. Thanks for sharing, it really is encouraging!

You're so right. I lived in Michigan most of my life and usually only heard people complaining about long winters, nothing to do etc. Now I live in another country and when I am back, I cannot tell you how gorgeous it looks to me - not that where I live is bad, it's actually gorgeous too - it just shows how you take your surroundings for granted and become desensitized to the unique features. Have a great summer!

Since I have lived in Louisiana since birth, I can kind of relate...I can imagine the culture shock I would experience if I made that move. This southern belle is not made to survive harsh winters. I would never leave my home lol. I’m happy with 95 degree days with 98% humidity. It’s just what you become accustomed to I guess, but I freeze to death when temps hit the 40’s.

Congrats on your new addition. You both deserve it. I live in NJ and it gets a bad rap. It has so much beauty.. mountains, lakes, horses, farms and of course the ocean nearby. Most any "city" is only a short ride to something relaxing and beautiful. I've been very busy putting in a garden... first in my life....and I'm old enough to be your Mom! I have access to all the farm food I want through the family (they run a big farm) but there is a lot of joy in growing your own. The pandemic has changed my thinking. I have turned into a prepper.

I grew up in a military family, but I was born in Oshkosh, WI, and went to high school in Green Bay. When I got out of the Army in the 90s, we moved to Oshkosh to go to college. Lake Winnebago was 2 blocks away and I would grab my fishing rod and a bucket many mornings and go catch walleyes, white bass and many other delicious fish. We didn't have a lot of money, but we ate well on fish from the lake and venison, which I harvested every fall at my extended family's deer camp. We have lived in Kansas now for 21 years near the Missouri River, which is worthless for edible fish. But I still love it here. Garden grows great, chickens are fun and produce. Asparagus grows fantastic, lol! People think Kansas is flat, but Leavenworth is the hilliest place I have ever lived, lol!

Pure Michigan. We have a similar story. I moved here in 1972 when I was 12 and lived in Lansing most of that time. 18 years ago we moved out to the country in Charlotte. My favorite parts besides South Haven or Grand Haven, is the UP, Porcupine Mountains & Houghton Hancock which gave me a San Francisco bay kind of vibe without the big city. Michigan is really beautiful and I haven't even seen it all.

Great video! I live in Arizona, the opposite of green 🙄, but there is beauty here too. We have amazing thunderstorms and incredible sunsets. Gardening is definitely a challenge here in ways I never imagined (I had ants steal my carrot seeds!). Life is so much more enjoyable when you are content with where you are. We live near Texoma lake in North Texas which is known for it's great Striper fishing. We also have a small lake just about 5 minutes away that has good bass and catfish, and just a few minutes past that is a brand new reservoir filling up right now! I can't wait to be able to fish it! I'm really hoping to be able to get my hubby a boat this year so we can take advantage of all of the great fishing resources near us!

Oh I’m so stupid. I was enjoying the video and the greenery then came the aerial footage of what looked like 2 well kept tombstones. I thought ‘oh look how nicely someone has looked after those graves. Showing total respect for past homestead owners. How lovely!” then I realised they were your bee hives bahahahha
Looks like you are both made for the boat. Rachel looked like she was having a blast :)

Do look into an electric motor if the Mercury engine quote to repair is high. Quieter and no fumes which can be bothersome at slow speed.
Thank you for reminding Todd to reveal the secret ingredient! 😃

Enjoy going along with you fishing on your new toy glad the maiden voyage went well looks like a really fun one for some relaxation and some exercise. I'm in central Ohio did not realize how close to lake Erie you actually lived. Enjoy those walleye they are wonderful fish although fresh caught most anything's wonderful.

Good lesson, Rachel! I was raised in a big city in Texas and moved to a teeny tiny town in Idaho when I was a teenager. I thought I had dropped off the face of the earth at first! I’ve been here over 50 years and there is no place I’d rather be. Michigan is beautiful, though. I’ve been there a few times. I love visiting the Midwest.

Pennsylvania has many megaliths in the state. I was married in the circle one. Lots of trails and state parks. My city makes mallow cups and has the oldest wooden roller coaster. And the oldest gas station and plenty of other great things. Love where you live y'all. Love the boat. Looking forward to more water adventures.

I am so jealous used to love our family boat rides! We have a same waterway here in Thunder Bay the river is called the Kamanistiqua River it empties into Lake Superior up above and to the Northwest of Lake Michigan. It is identical and all day they do the same thing here and pass the tugs and the lakers. Oh and just as green even right down to the hydro towers!! As for the Walleye lol spoken like a true American in Canada we mostly call them Pickerel. We have adopted your name too.
    Have fun

Born in So Calif, moved to Wisc as a teen. Hated it then!! I love the northern climate now, but as I age, I need slightly more stable winters. Being a snowboard is a necessity.

Oh boy, that looked fun. I’m a transplant Californian in Pennsylvania. Verrrry green compared, but both beautiful in very different ways. I do enjoy the green, but the humidity is killer. Got to find me a boat...I do hear the second best day of your life is the day you buy a boat.😉

We live in Upstate NY in the Adirondacks, which is so beautiful. However, we can’t take the politics nor the taxes!!!! SO, we bought land in Tennessee near the mountains and will move in 5 years in retirement. I found love of the land in NY, and I’ll find love of the land in TN. It’s all about an open mind and travel to explore. Thank you for sharing♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🥰
