      @@seafire820 The Canon EOS 1V is another amazing film camera, but yes, Canon's styling leaves a lot to be desired compared to Nikon's. The EOS SLRs and the 1D series are plain ugly. But despite that, to be honest and even though I'm a Nikon person, I do like my 1V more than my F5.

  • @drunacres
    @drunacres 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That absolutely is the original price tag. JPY325,000 is almost exactly US$3,000 at today's exchange rates, but was closer to US$4,000 at the time. In 1998 that would have been quite a lot of money. I live in Japan and can attest the quality of used cameras here - hence I have a real camera fetish, which includes two each of F3, F4, F5 and F6 - all mint.

    I've been shooting mine pretty much everyday on movie sets in the last year. I took it a bit for granted for a long moment and last week I lent it to a friend for a 3 days shoot. Now that it's back, I feel emotional seeing the camera that brought me so much fun and recognition in the last year. This camera is built to last forever, I don't even think it's too heavy! I'm so used to it that it feels like the extension of my arm! It's fast, it's simple, it's totally reliable, after over a 100 rolls shot on it I never had any problem of any sort, the light meter is excellent, it goes up to 1/8000 of a second, 8 fps, it has a super good auto-focus with only 5 optional points (I think it's a plus!), auto-rewinds, advances film by itself. I only have a 50mm 1.4G that I always leave on it so I'm not over thinking about which lens to use (I gotta admit I'm more and more tempted to buy a 35mm). I think that the Autofocus and the Aperture Priority mode are making me more consistent then most film shooters. I can't recommend this camera enough! I don't really know if it's the best film camera ever made, but I know it may be the best buy I did in my whole life so far! I love it!

    This was so cool. I still have an F5 as well as a late-production F3HP (purposely bought it when I found out Nikon discontinued it). Those bodies are relatively unused, unfortunately, but I used the heck out of their predecessors back in the day. I also had the F4S (a US version that included the battery grip). This really brought back fond memories! It’s also a good reminder of the fact that, despite all the fantastic progress with computerized cameras and digital capture, the basics were already well set out in the old Nikon, Canon, and other film gear. (I love the fact that the F3/F3HP lasted for decades). In addition to the swappable viewfinder, I believe there are also alternative focus screens for the F5.

    Fell in love with the Nikon F5 the first time I saw it, but ended up buying a Minolta Maxxum 7 a few years later. I know it sounds crazy, but the Maxxum 7 made me love photography even more. Features such as looking through the viewfinder to focus, a large LCD display panel on the back showed camera settings and more, if I didn’t finish shooting the roll of 200 speed film that day, I could remove it and put in 800 speed film and take some night shots; then put the 200 speed film back into the camera the next day and shoot the rest of the roll, I loved that all the camera functions were on the body and not buried under menus. Finally, built-in wireless flash made off camera flash photography a breeze. I still use it today alongside my Sony A7 RII.

I later moved to more advanced Minolta cameras and shot with them for years. I love my Minolta’s and they’re still in use. I’d recommend the Maxxum 7 or Maxxum 9. The latter, if not the best film camera ever made is certainly the most feature rich including an incredible 1/12000th shutter speed. I don’t think any other film camera has matched it.

    Canon cameras have a smarter roll loading system that works backwards: when you load a fresh roll of film, the camera unwinds all the film first and as you shoot it retracts the film back into the case. That way if you accidentally open the camera mid way you don't lose your shots as the exposed part of the film is already inside.

    • @dungareesareforfools
      @dungareesareforfools 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it was just some older EOS models that did that, the recent (and ultimate) EOS 1V certainly doesn't. Also, latter Nikons and Minoltas too allow you to choose whether the film leader is wound back in on rewind, the F6 certainly does.

    • @robbiemer8178
      @robbiemer8178 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That "pre-wind" system was not on Canon's pro cameras, just on the consumer grade cameras. I guess Canon decided that a pro might need to reload as quickly as possible to get the next shot and wouldn't be too likely to open the camera while it had film in it. But the amateur might well make that mistake or even forget that the camera was loaded. I remember some of my older relatives would only shoot one roll of film a year: a shot of the kid on their birthday, a shot of mom and dad on their anniversary, maybe one or two shots at Thanksgiving and again at Xmas.

    Great review. I also have an F5 in similar condition that I managed to pick up from here in the UK earlier this year. It’s an absolute beast with more modes than I would ever wish for. I shoot mine in manual mode most of the time. Nikon absolutely knew they were onto another winner with this when released. I would never consider an F6 as it’s just a souped up F100 and is way overpriced for what it is. Just need to get a good F2AS in my life now.

    What a brilliant find. A true time-capsule. Now that you've had a bit of time with it, I wonder which you like better... the unobtrusive focus indicators of the F5 or the red indicators of the F100? I owned two F100s, purchased in 2000 for $995 USD each. They were a back up to my original Nikon D1 (which was shite, but an amazing value at the time for $5K) and used to shoot B&W.

    This camera is one of the greatest cameras ever built.
    I have the whole collection of Kodak's digital versions of them (DCS620/620X/660/720X/760). The best digital Nikon bodies so far. Sadly the DCS7xx series electronics are dying too soon, maybe I should get a film F5 one day but this will for sure not beat my fully equipped F2 Photomic, F2A and F2AS which work perfectly fine even without batteries. I have also the DW-30 and DW-31 for the F5 as well as the DW-1 and DW-2 for the F2. Especially the DW-31/DW-2 with the magnifier is great for shooting in lower positions.

    Darryl I have watched this video at least four times already and I have to say that your F5 is a minter for sure.
    Last Friday I got myself a new Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8G lens with a Hoya UV Filter, and that will be my main lens for the F5
    I will purchase a F5 after the New Year which will have to be in mint condition, and yes it will be from a seller in Japan.
    At least with a film camera one does not have worry about megapixels or whether or not it is a DX or FX format camera.....lol

  • @user-kp4cz4xt8v

    Darryl, I have another great alternative which saves you much much more money. The F80 also takes G series lenses and does matrix metering. But the top shutter speed only goes to 1/4000 and it doesn’t have the ai index coupling which means you can’t meter with the old ai and aid lenses. Otherwise it’s does the same job and also much lighter weight.

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would that be the same for the F90 ? I think I have one in the garage somewhere.

    • @Funktrainer

      Darryl Carey I guess so. Try to put some G lenses on there. See if the autofocus works.

    • @geoffreymendelson
      @geoffreymendelson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The better alternative if you are looking for cheap is an F75/N75. It also lacks the AI coupling, but it works fine with AF, AFD, and AFS lenses with or without VR. I got one one eBay for -$20. A charity that takes donations and resells them had an N75 with a Tamron 28-200 (rated better than the Nikon) AFD type lens, for the same price with shipping as the Japanese dealers sell the lens without.
      The combination was supposed to be tested and did come with a money back guarantee, when I got it, there was a roll of film in it, and two lithium batteries with a 10 year life time that were expired. But everything works flawlessly. :-)

      You made the right choice. The F6 is nothing but a souped up F100 and was a cynical ploy by Nikon to sell a high end film camera to wealthy amateur film photographers. I have a mint condition F5 like this review, and it will be the last camera I would ever sell. It fits in the hand perfectly has more modes than I ever use and is a joy to use.

Each one saw improvements and new features, cutting edge for their time. But as a former pro rental house employee and newspaper staffer, the culmination and best one of those three flagships, is the the F5 without a doubt.

    1. ATG's Rolleiflex 6008 Professional
    2. ATG's Contax 645
    3. ATG's Rolleiflex 3003
    4. ATG's Contax RTS

    6. ATG's Canon EOS-1V HS Kim II (modified to shoot 10fps without Canon's battery pack)

    The Nikon F5 is nice because you can remove the prism finder & the high eyepoint is large.

      Hi Tom, the F5 is a beautiful designed camera. The only thing I would change is the AF-ON buttons as they are a little small, but apart from that everything is in the right place and works really well. Surprised how much smaller the F5 is to the D4 and D5... Maybe this will be the size of the Nikon Pro Mirrorless.
