UPDATE : For folks watching this beyond the date it was posted. This video was posted 1 day BEFORE the large key wave had came out. I know there's more than enough keys that are going out and being given out thus making this video pretty much outdated. But thanks for some you notifying me as to why it's easier now. I'm glad everyone's getting the chance to actually try the game!
I think that Garry's Mod was carried considerably by the presence of half life 2's iconic and high quality assets. Even to this day many gamemodes still feature models directly lifted from half life 2. The fact that S&box doesn't legally have access to something like half life: alyx's assets is going to make the game's success almost entirely rely on user generated content, so I can see why the idea is to try to give early access specifically to modders and not just "players".
Facepunch has the money and assets to at least put down the basics. They can take the textures and models from Rust and use that as a base for the game's textures. The assets aren't the issue, it's the constant breaking of the game in updates due to changes during development.
i cant lie, the game feels like some sort of roblox, a graphically advanced at that, ik its not supposed to be like garry's mod, but damm, knowing that cs2 is not going to be like gmod kinda sucks, i would've loved to get a feel of a garry's mod in source 2

As someone with over 10k Hours and with the Yes I'm the Real Garry achievement... I believe I've earned my right to play S&Box. lol (Since some of yall aren't capable of understanding humor, this is a joke. I already have access, and am fully aware that no one is entitled to access.)
This right here is the ultimate way to get a s&box key. only like 1 percent of owners even have that achivement. But garry should give it to you personally.
I genuinely stopped caring about S&Box over a year ago because of how terrible and disrespectful the access process was. For a game entirely reliant on user generated content, Garry is being extremely close minded about the rollout. By the time the game launches, GODOT 4, Fortnite Creative 2.0, and Unreal 5. Are going to be LEAGUES ahead of this platform. Hell even Roblox is ahead. RIP Garrysmod 2. I have no faith in the project.
I definitely get that the process was incredibly odd and still is. BUT if you feel that way it's definitely understandable as to why you'd move on from it.
I think the netcode is fine in sbox, I think it’s that developers just don’t seem to know how to utilise the simulate function which is fair since there’s not much telling developers how to do things such way
As someone who has a key since near the end of the queue, and 500 hours developing, I gave up developing anything useful in s&box, here are my main reasons: A. Constant C# API changes. Nothing is permanent in this game, and stuff breaks daily. It's fine to be developing new stuff, but it's frustrating for devs like me making new stuff when the stuff we worked on is broken, thus requiring me to fix it and not work on new features and additions. B. Lack of proper map support. Last time I tested, the most you could do is restart/reset the map. Everything else would need to be done in engine and written by the dev. On top of this, they removed a WIP GPU light mapper (that was from valve, not facepunch, as the same code is in the HL:A version of source 2), and that iirc was two years ago. There is still no GPU lightmapper (so compile times can take hours). In that time I've made one entirely in C#/HLSL and it works, and that only took about a month or two. You also can't save everything at runtime without writing that code yourself. You also can't load a map in addition to the existing one, which REALLY sucks. To mitigate this I had to make a shader, and a pure C# model loader for the file format I was using (thank god it was an open format), but it lacked the hammer toolset. C. Lack of friends. Only recently did you have the ability to actually invite friends to get a s&box key. I realize the game is in it's early stages, but it feels really rushed to the closed beta. I'd possibly come back to working in s&box if these issues were fixed.
I'd assume since the last time you played this was towards the end of the developer torture service. It's been a good couple of months and seems like most of this stuff has probably been fixed at this point. I'd probably look into getting another key again since a lot of people do have spare and are giving them out. Hope this helps.

I totally understand why they want to limit access to the game, however I find it strange how they originally only gave keys out to developers (mainly with connections through garry's mod), then the general public via the raffle, but are yet to give keys to content creators such as yourself.
it was a really lucky draw for people like me since I did mention I would create content covering and showcasing the game itself I personally didn't expect I'd get a key but yeah. It does make some sense since people have created content already within garry's mod and want to transfer over to try to create content for this game. But this makes the most sense because again there isn't as much content to play around with. So at least for now with the new wave of invite codes tons of new games are gonna be able to be developed and published.
It is terrible, had it not been gatekept garbage. And had Gary not been an asshole and capable of taking criticism, maybe the game would've survived. But it is nothing, and never will be anything
Valve didn't give facepunch the permission to make Garrys Mod without a reason. They know how good facepunch is. They will deliver even if it takes a few years. These Guys STILL Update Rust regularly with FREE UPDATES even tho they could've probably stopped a while ago with the amount of Content the game has.
lets be honest, the state rust was in a few years ago was unacceptable... i'm glad they're constantly updating it so it doesn't become dull like DayZ does after a while. it really feels like a passion project
I would think the game definitely needs a lot more developers than players right now, for at least a year before you introduce more players than developers
Hense the current invite code situation going on right now. A ton of developers have gotten codes so they have the chance to also invite other developer friends they know to work on projects for the game.
I'd like access to s&box mainly for editor access but i know i'm still a newbie when it comes to game dev but for the time being i've been practicing using the alyx workshop tools and im excited for when s&box does get released to the public. ill keep honing my skills till that day comes

Right now (and when you commented this) it's not the best time for developing as the tools are extremely hard to understand and use although they are working on a scene editor which should make it easier in the future

There was a point where Garry was giving access back to those who had it revoked. Mine was revoked due to inactivity, but I messaged Garry and got it back, and have been consistently creating models since!
since i heard about the option for vr and source 2 i got super fucking hyped for this game, learning more about the game thru you made me even more hyped and gave me more and more hype
If we continue at a rate of 10 keys per Friday, the game will grow exponentially. Soon, the game will practically be in open beta. I didn’t expect this to happen nearly as soon as it did but it’s nice to see some new faces.
Yeah I wasn't expecting this either knowing that if the community starts to get those keys at that rate the game will be in a heightened wave of growth. But eventually I feel a ton of people will probably stop playing after a while. so hopefully there will be more developers than anything so we can get more content
it's crazy to think that at some point in time years ahead there will basically be darkrp in this game and it will be much more better then what we have in garrys mod. i feel like people would replicate the source feeling through the use of textures from half life but also take advantage of the new source engine to make the experience 100x better then it is in gmod.
Yes! There's a lot of promise and possibility I think especially with what you can in the game and that's what so appealing about it. Is having the control to create what you want and also make it way better than how it was on gmod.
I feel like the difficulty to develop should remain because S&Box really feels like it's becoming an engine within an engine, that already has these tools and more available. We just need the classic GMod Sandbox fun as the main draw, of course these other changes are MORE than welcomed, I just think that the focus being that it's.. a game browser just feels weird from what 95% of us hoped for
Pretty much. Plus there's already a sandbox game within s&box right now. Unfortunately people set themselves up to get disappointed and get mad at the creators for not making exactly what they wanted in their own heads.
It's a developer preview so I wouldn't expect much right now since it's not final. But that was another issue Garry mentioned. check some of my more recent content I talk more about this.
I think I got s&box like a year ago, it was very very hard, I had to spam click this one button versus a few hundred other people until I got the game put in my library, it pretty cool.
I applied for access in summer 2021 and it told me i would get it a year later , come back a year later and no key whatsoever , just got put further back in the list
Garrys Mod mixed with Roblox? Nah Im good. I thought this would be like a better Garrys Mod, which seems kind of hard to imagine by itself, but if Roblox has anything to do with it, then no, just no.
GMod is strangling itself with the aging of source 1 and its limitations. (Barbarian mod management? No instancing? 16gb of memory to run a map that a modern engine could run at higher framerates with better graphics in 4? No thanks.) S&box is a vaporware game for a pretty-much vaporware pretty-much bespoke engine that's getting older every day, and isn't like GMod anyway. No proper GMod 2 in sight. Nothing comes close.
Gmod 2 is probably never gonna be a thing and if anything Gmod 2 would be a literal mod INSIDE of s&box with how the tools are allowing you to create the games you'd want.
You know, now that I think about it, aside from half life, what has valve even made that was good? counterstrike was originally a mod team fortress was originally a mod for a game from another developer dota was originally a mod for a game from another developer portal was originally a tech demo from another developer L4D was from another developer that got bought by valve goldsrc itself was a hacked up version of quake (this was back when things were pretty simple as well) source 1 was a really hacked up version of goldsrc, along with other people's code hacked onto it source 2 is a hacked up version of source 1 and barely even exists steam was reviled in its early years and still isn't exactly great today (we just tolerate it)

People are so narrow minded, ignorant (and honestly stupid) to realize that this is NOT GMOD 2, and that it's still in ALPHA STAGES of development. This public disregard of S&box is mainly because they expect the same dev team to make the same shit over and over and over and over again, expecting something different when this is directly saying that it isn't trying to be the same and people reject it, because "this isn't gmod, L game 💀💀💀". If you want to play GMod, go play GMod. I have a feeling people would get on board WAY easier if people would compare S&box to Roblox, since they're both providing a set of tools and the creative gateway to make your own experiences, minigames and full projects to be hosted on a hub.
A good chunk of people see this as like a Roblox 2.0 while others may see the game as garry's mod 2. Unfortunately as you mentioned people just want the same game but updated and that doesn't seem to be the case with s&box so some folks are extremely upset about this. But I'm definitely excited and interested to see how this game will turn out since it's expanding on the idea of what gmod was trying to do but obviously on a grander scale.
The games player count in the past 30 days is over 23,000... Nothing close to its hayday.. but how on earth is that "dead"? Its like calling minecraft "dead". Yes, it is absolutely a game most of us play on a whim / short lived servers if at all these days, but to call the game inactive and dead is a farce.
dude an update just came out today, and it fixed an issues i have been having with glitchy menus for months, now I can actually make maps properly again
Guys you have 0 idea how hard it's to make game for scratch. As indie developer solo developer I know how difficult it's to make game for 0. It's true that I have tools like blender game engine ECT to work on. However even with all the nessery tools the are a lot of mekanics system ECT I have disaing on my own. Yes I don't to make the physic the tools and the rendering. But I still have to make the game logic the 3D models level disaing ECT.
I'm purely excited for a public release because it looks like it will be easier to create models for. No more VTFEdit and Crowbar hopefully; that's what's been the barrier for developing Garry's Mod assets.
i think everyone immediately just discards the game once they see the playermodel. the playermodel doesnt even matter because once this becomes public no ones gonna be using that model since they can just change it
The best part about a moddable game is you can just choose what you want and add it in of course. Unfortunately most people just go to hating it when you can literally change it which I definitely get but yeah.
I'd like to try making some games/content in s&box, but I don't want to commit to trying to get a key when there's already so many other people that deserve one. It honestly just sounds like a better roblox.
S&Box looks like a *spirtual* successor to GMod but not an actual sequel but this doesn't mean S&Box is bad GMod had years to become the behemoth it is now but S&Box isn't even ready for a full release so there are tons to be change. Lots of the criticism to the game are pretty bad because they all come down to this thing looks bad. Lots of people dislike the sausage man obviously but I mean how much people choose to be kleiner in GMod if they are given the choice of other playermodels? I doubt S&Box will force you to be a person shaped like a bean all the time
My personal opinion is that if you just want to play the game you will be really disappointed right now. The game is super buggy and breaks every other day with barely anything to actually play it's best to wait for release unless you like to dev with it
I would love to try to get into the game, even to test the developer tools, Mainly I want to see how far I can push the enviourments and detail but sadly i think they're looking for people who knows the scripting language, wich is fair.

S&box is a vaporware game for a pretty-much vaporware pretty-much bespoke engine that's getting older every day, and isn't like GMod anyway.
No proper GMod 2 in sight.
Nothing comes close.
Gmod 2 is probably never gonna be a thing and if anything Gmod 2 would be a literal mod INSIDE of s&box with how the tools are allowing you to create the games you'd want.

counterstrike was originally a mod
team fortress was originally a mod for a game from another developer
dota was originally a mod for a game from another developer
portal was originally a tech demo from another developer
L4D was from another developer that got bought by valve
goldsrc itself was a hacked up version of quake (this was back when things were pretty simple as well)
source 1 was a really hacked up version of goldsrc, along with other people's code hacked onto it
source 2 is a hacked up version of source 1 and barely even exists
steam was reviled in its early years and still isn't exactly great today (we just tolerate it)

I dont know i am just trying to get into Valves new engine early i guess i can download it but i just love the idea of these tool so can i basically beta test stuff on the fly. People are so narrow minded, ignorant (and honestly stupid) to realize that this is NOT GMOD 2, and that it's still in ALPHA STAGES of development. This public disregard of S&box is mainly because they expect the same dev team to make the same shit over and over and over and over again, expecting something different when this is directly saying that it isn't trying to be the same and people reject it, because "this isn't gmod, L game 💀💀💀". If you want to play GMod, go play GMod.
I have a feeling people would get on board WAY easier if people would compare S&box to Roblox, since they're both providing a set of tools and the creative gateway to make your own experiences, minigames and full projects to be hosted on a hub.
A good chunk of people see this as like a Roblox 2.0 while others may see the game as garry's mod 2. Unfortunately as you mentioned people just want the same game but updated and that doesn't seem to be the case with s&box so some folks are extremely upset about this.
But I'm definitely excited and interested to see how this game will turn out since it's expanding on the idea of what gmod was trying to do but obviously on a grander scale.

It's true that I have tools like blender game engine ECT to work on.
However even with all the nessery tools the are a lot of mekanics system ECT I have disaing on my own.
Yes I don't to make the physic the tools and the rendering.
But I still have to make the game logic the 3D models level disaing ECT.

I'm purely excited for a public release because it looks like it will be easier to create models for. No more VTFEdit and Crowbar hopefully; that's what's been the barrier for developing Garry's Mod assets.

i think everyone immediately just discards the game once they see the playermodel. the playermodel doesnt even matter because once this becomes public no ones gonna be using that model since they can just change it
The best part about a moddable game is you can just choose what you want and add it in of course. Unfortunately most people just go to hating it when you can literally change it which I definitely get but yeah.
I'd like to try making some games/content in s&box, but I don't want to commit to trying to get a key when there's already so many other people that deserve one. It honestly just sounds like a better roblox.

S&Box looks like a *spirtual* successor to GMod but not an actual sequel but this doesn't mean S&Box is bad
GMod had years to become the behemoth it is now but S&Box isn't even ready for a full release so there are tons to be change. Lots of the criticism to the game are pretty bad because they all come down to this thing looks bad. Lots of people dislike the sausage man obviously but I mean how much people choose to be kleiner in GMod if they are given the choice of other playermodels? I doubt S&Box will force you to be a person shaped like a bean all the time

My personal opinion is that if you just want to play the game you will be really disappointed right now. The game is super buggy and breaks every other day with barely anything to actually play it's best to wait for release unless you like to dev with it
