The average person in Jilin is bilingual, they speak korean and mandarin. Also, Jilin was once part of Goguryeo. That's why there are a lot of chaoxianzu (korean) and korean culture there. Renjun also grew up bilingual. If you've ever seen Renjun's childhood videos, you'll know. There are videos of him acting, singing in korean and dancing traditional korean dances.
There must obviously be a reason why Renjun never brings this up himself and why it's not talked about in this show. There are videos of him from his school days but except reenacting a scene from the video he never speaks of going to a Korean speaking school. He only mentions his grandmother speaking Korean/liking kpop/watching kdramas in passing. Never explains it further. I'm thinking it's due to political reasons. The tension between China - South Korea is ever changing including the Chinese "kpop ban". From what I understand the "China is one" policy is strong and it's not favorable to draw attention to oneself being from another ethnic group than Han. I've also read that chiaoxianzu are sometimes viewed negatively in South Korea and face prejudice, this could be another reason why it's not brought up. I think it's unfair to 🙄 at "the audience" for not knowing though. Key obviously knows as he's very close to Renjun. But for some reason, my guesses being political + discriminatory, it's not brought up.
