You shouldn't hv to justify your 'rough draft' of backing, but you are such a great teacher that you DO take the time to help others. Hats off to you for your caring ways.
Pat, I (probably 90% of us) totally understood what you were saying the other day. I knew you were making the quilt your own. I feel when you explained that you was making complimentary pillow shams, that really said it all.
Robert Kaufman has a great app that will figure your borders, binding and backing yardage. It has been accurate for me. Your drawing was the first time I really saw someone figure it all out.
Good morning, you are the BOSS of your own quilt!!! Made perfect sense when you explained it last for making it wider. I love you down to earth approach to everything. Blessings y'all.
I so agree, Pat's decision to add side borders for the queen size quilt was very clear to me. I also understood her plan for the back. Pat's quilt, her decisions. People can be so critical and deflating.
Pat Sloan, thank you for doing the extra explanation for quilt backing! It was above & beyond necessary cause yesterday's walk through was very good! Appreciate all you do🎉🎉 Banana quilt? I just thought that was another version of Bow Tie quilt! Love it no matter what it is called. Heartily dislike the cold temperatures we are having! Stay warm & keep quilting & we'll catch you online tomorrow. 😊😊
I totally understand what you were saying the other day. No apologies necessary. And bottom line, It’s YOUR quilt. You make it anyway YOU want. Everyone else can make THEIR quilt to suit them.
Love your Perfect 10 Christmas quilt.
@Pat Sloan No need to justify your decision to modify the size of your quilt! We all make adjustments when/if they are warranted. Patterns are often just a starting point!
I total agree
Agree!! At the end of the day it’s HER quilt.
@Pat Sloan I’ve always admired the Banana quilt pattern. It’s on my to-do list. I love the addition of the corner stones!
I love how you add that little border so your points don’t get swallowed up by the binding. It has improved my finished quilt, thank you, thank you!
I'm happy it has helped you!
You are so kind and patient to your subscribers. Loved the pressed flowers quilt.
I love the floral that you used in the center of the Pressed Flower block. Very effective.
I really like the banana quilt. Love the colors and have the book. Need to add to my list of quilts to make!
Salutations from chilling PA.
I have never followed a pattern exactly bc i always find a way to make it unique. I'm the boss of my quilt room, so I change out blocks from a sampler, completely change the fabrics and I almost always change the size of quilt bc so many beds need a longer drop.
You are a very considerate teacher.
Oh sweet Pat! First of all I totally understood what you were saying on the other video and probably most people did, HOWEVER, I am so frustrated with people who think it’s ok to say what ever crosses their mind! It’s your quilt and your channel! You do whatever you want to and rain on the nasty folks! As always thank you for all the expertise, ideas and just general fun stuff you share! Have a great day!
Pat! Love watching you because you do things differently. I have yet to make a quilt following a pattern to the letter! Quilting is expensive and very time consuming however I love it and do it for me therefore change every pattern to fit what I need! Enjoyed watching your approach to measuring backing and borders for barn star! I did a pieced backing using some of the blocks to allow for smaller quilt and less backing material!
Those purple flowers are just beautiful 🩷Can I wait to see the setting? I guess I'll have to lol😊
Hello from a very chilly Raleigh NC! I love the banana quilt. The cornerstones are a brilliant addition! I need to add a note to my book to remind me to do that! I love the birthday cake quilt from that book too, and plan to make a second one as a leader enter project soon. Can we do another sew along from that book or the Perfect 5 book? I have lots of charm packs that I need to start using up! They are quick sew. Maybe one of them would be a good block a day project for March. We visited the QOV exhibit at the quilt museum in Paducah in September. There were some gorgeous quilts displayed and it was fun to see one of your quilts in person. The monochromatic pressed flowers blocks look great!
Good morning from Schertz Texas
Made sense to me the first time. Geeze people!
Good morning from chilly Colorado Springs. ❤️
I am really loving the Pressed Flowers blocks! I think that would make the perfect quilt for my mother. Yet another project to add to the calendar!
Your scarf is so lovely. ❤
Good morning from Surprise, Arizona 😊
Wow, pressed flowers blocks beautiful 😅
Good morning Pat❤️❤️
Thank you for the link to the Banana Quilt and I like the way you laid out your colors and added the corner stones. Thanks so much for sharing. I love starting my day with your videos😊
Love how the aqua background shoofly blocks go so well.
thank you! i love them too
Great plan for your quilt 😊
pressed flowers sew pretty
Hello from Pennsylvania
It would be cute to make a wall hanging just with the witch.
Thank you Pat! You did say you were adding a side border because you wanted it wider for your drop. Watch your post first thing almost everyday!
When doing "quilt math" for your backing make sure to add seam allowances and fabric for a sleeve and or binding.
Good morning from Texas!
Purple and green go together, so good
Wow the fabric bundle you got you could also use for the critter quilt!
they would be darling in a critter quilt.
I love the Pressed Flowers. They are so pretty in your fabric line.
Hi Pat! Tina from Florida. I opened mine yesterday and went through the fabrics too. You were right the first time on the one fabric. They are turtles. I thought they were iguanas at first but the more I looked, I realised they were turtles.
Oh my 🤦♀️ in the hundreds of quilts I’ve made over the years, I would say that maybe 10 were made exactly to the pattern . All of those were kits with the exact amount of fabric needed. I’ve always made my backs according to the best use of the fabric .
I have the perfect 10 book and hope to make that one too. I agree with you to add width for the bed. I just hate it when it doesn't hang down enough! I guess some people don't understand that we can do whatever we want to our quilts. I wonder what "quilt police department" they belong to? LOL🤣
Backing: 3 yard 2” x 3 = 9 yards, 6 inches
the last vertical is not 40" wide, so you don't need that much, you can piece the last strip
Your Pressed Flowers blocks are so pretty. Purple isn't a color we see from you often.
The pressed flower is so pretty😊
thank you!
Oh some of that animal TP fabric may go nice as sashing or fillers for the next critter quilt.
Hi My longarmer, Theodora Pounds, requites six(6) inches all around. I can add scrap muslin to accommodate her request.
do what is needed by your person. Everyone is a bit different
Yay! I just used my Sew Sampler coupon to buy a fat quarter bundle of Drawing Room! (Also bought the pattern, so I can quilt along with you!)
super!!
I just buy a 108 fabric ( mostly yours!)…I use an app by Robert Kaufman. No matter pieced backings make me nuts! But I guess at times we just figure it out! Love your videos.
I use the Robert Kaufman quilt calculator app to figure out everything. I have NO math skills. 😂
Good morning Pat. Do you differentiate density of quilting for a quilt that is going to be used (i.e. as a throw or a bed cover) as opposed to hung. For instance, a Baptist Fan seems like a denser pattern than, say, large meander. Is that a consideration you make?
Ok I’m still confused… isn’t each section on the back 40x110? That would mean each section is 3 yards so it would be more like 8 yards since the 16” section could be pieced. Please let me know if I’m thinking wrong. But I’m loving your hair style!!
The 3rd panel is not 40" so it can be pieced
Hi pat, isn’t it 3 yds. For each strip of the backing (or 2.8M). So 6 yds and 1/2 of that for the 16” pce. So 7.5 yds?
I have 8 yds, so that is what i will use.
Why not do 32" wide (plus 1/2" for seam allowances) column for the backing? I realize there's some waste but if your backing fabric WOF is 40-44" then you'll have at least 7.5" wide strips left over, that's plenty big enough to cut into squares or use for borders for other projects.
i don't know why you would want to do that. seems like a lot of extra work for no reason
@@PatSloan Because I'm hung up on symmetry so the idea of having one panel on the back narrower than the others gives me the chills. Maybe if it was in the middle I'd be OK with it.
So that means a 9 yard backing?
the last panel is NOT 40" so i don't need the 9 yds, as the last panel can be pieced
I think the people who watch your videos on TV can't see the text below your videos. I watched your videos for the first this week on our TV and there is no information box, no ability to like the video and no comments. So I think a large number of your viewers maybe be watching on TV. I never watch you on my phone, so I don't know what happens there. I am always surprised so few people"like" your videos. But it makes sense if they are watching on TV..
Pat, as I read briefly you should not have to justify why you are doing anything to your viewers. And you already explained why you were adding the borders that you were adding. because a 10 inch drop was not enough for you, you like a longer drop on your bedding. So perhaps these kids should pay more attention in class. Sorry I just by nature have a great sence of attention to detail. Details just stick with me. No offense to anyone, but I suggest watching a video again if you are confused by something. I am not just talking about Pat's videos, that goes for any video out there that you are not clear as to why the person is doing something. Again no offense is intended. Tracy
thanks Tracy!! it is a great suggestion for people to just watch again
