I had suspected there was an issue with my middle son’s motion. It looked like he was bringing the ball just past his ear and not extending his arm. I took some video and slowed the replay and could see he pushing the ball as you describe it. His upper arm wasn’t in line with his shoulder plane. So now we’re working on getting into a better position when his arm retracts into the scalp load. He can feel and see the difference right away. Thanks for your video - it helped me confirm what was happening.

Great video, Dan. Love the straight forward approach and the no BS videos you provide. Always enjoy your videos.

Around 3:50 is Lucas giolito. He used to have a really long arm action and struggled a lot with command. Went to a shorter arm action and became and all star

...and is getting Tommy John again. Also, shorter arm action happened later in his MLB career, when he was already getting used to MLB hitters. Dont infer too much causation - there likely is very little. Shorter arm actions are not better, nor are they worse. They just are.

I'm glad I found this video. My 8 y/o is doing what I thought was "bad" short-arming, but based on talking to a couple people, and seeing your video, I see that he's in an OK spot.

Great stuff. As you emphasize, when the stride foot plants, the throwing arm need to be ready to go forward. Could you possibly do a video concerning "dragging" the throwing arm, i.e. where the throwing arm, after the stride foot contacts the ground, still at hip level or lower, has to go up before the ball can be thrown forward? I showed stop action motion of Sandy Koufax's pitching mechanics to a young pitcher about the importance of the throwing arm being ready to deliver the pitch, to no avail, unfortunately, because his dad (a mediocre high school athlete) knew best.

Great video! Can you do some videos on velocity? Like mechanics that could make you leak velocity and how to fix them. Stuff like that. Looking to add a few MPH this offseason.
Also, I've been reading that arm layback can add velocity and is supposed to help with arm pain. However, I don't see every pitcher doing that. So is that really a necessary thing? Or is it one of those things some pitchers do and others don't. Thanks, Coach! Keep up the great work the tips here are outstanding. Can't find stuff like this anywhere else without paying.

I have about 25 videos lined up, velocity bores me, but some of it will help.

Love your videos and perspective on the game. Saw you pitch a few times with the Riversharks. My son for some reason gets extension then when going forward will drive his elbow and bicep to his side with little to no extension if he does follow through his forearm makes a belt at his waist and hand ends up on the hip. Lack of power and rarely on target. And that's just on regular throws in the field and when catching haven't had him pitch to save batters and the catcher lol. I can't figure it out though tried a ton of stuff the Clean Fuego is somewhat helping

yeah, it can be tough to figure out.

I think I've been pushing the ball. My throwing mechanics cause me pain on the outside of my inner elbow.

Great video! Do u think is harder to get more Hip to shoulder separation on a shorter arm path? i think that the long path gives more time to pull back the shoulder in order get the separation that u mentioned on an older video. (thats my INSANELY AMATEUR) Opinion hahah. Thx 4 the video Dan

    • @DanBlewett
      @DanBlewett 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I dont think the short arm action is right for most pitchers, and it's not what most human beings have been doing for 100 years. I think if it was the best way to throw, more pitchers would have figured it out long before now, and I'm not sure shoulder hip separation improves either way. The way most pitchers throw, mechanically, is not that different from the way pitchers threw 50 years ago. The off-the-field stuff (strength, arm care) is what's very different and accounts for more of the velocity increases.

Dan, do you have a video on off field arm care? I haven’t really seen any coach talk about it. If this area is important, should we build that into player’s routine in their youth / middle school / high school years already?

I need a video how to stop pushing the ball. His elbow is up but arm bent, then elbow goes out front. He's playing 2nd and short stop, cause he can field the ball good( nothing gets passed him). But throws weak.

Hi! Would you make a video of how to fix the “bad” short arming. My son does this and we can’t seem to fix it.

    • @DanBlewett

hi, there's no straightforward fix for that, too big in scope for a youtube video. My online pitching course would be your best bet, or see a local pitching coach.
